Because road cleats (like SPD-SL) use a 3 bolt arrangement rather than the SPD clear which uses 2 bolt. If you have SPD pedals on your road bike though you're fine (also SPD shoes like his are easier to walk in).

Well, they can be used on road bikes with flat pedals, but road SPD's are different from MTB SPD's so you won't be able to use road cleats with these
