Well, they can be used on road bikes with flat pedals, but road SPD's are different from MTB SPD's so you won't be able to use road cleats with these

Be careful with sizing as I have always found Shimano to be a bit on the small side and had to order a size larger

Because road cleats (like SPD-SL) use a 3 bolt arrangement rather than the SPD clear which uses 2 bolt. If you have SPD pedals on your road bike though you're fine (also SPD shoes like his are easier to walk in).
