Received a phone call from Home Serve yesterday who are working together with United Utilities and I was offered plumbing and drains cover for 50p a month! There is no excess and covers repairs up to £4000. Also offers unlimited call outs. I asked if this offer was for certain customers only but told it is available through Home Serve website so worth visiting the site and checking it out.

12 month contract after which the price will rise but can be cancelled at any time with no cancellation fees!

Just to correct everyone, you only have responsibility for your part of the drain before it merges with other households - when your pipe joins a pipe that has COME from elsewhere upstream, it is then classed as 'shared drain' - this is then the responsibility of the water company and in actual fact you should not be using a service such as this on shared drains.

The time this offers works best is if you the are end property on a road/cul-de-sak as you are likely to be the beginning of the pipe run - being as no one else's pipes come in to your property to join your pipes, you then have full responsibility over your boundary.

This is all known from experience with a water company a couple of years ago after a flood and determining who's responsibility it was to repair drains, flood damage etc

avoid! I was lured by similar offer from HomeServe 2 years ago - it was one for boiler and CH.
One of the extras was a free boiler check during that initial year. I had an third party engineer (as HomeServe doesn`t employ any and uses some small local plumbing/CH companies) turned up to carry out the boiler check. This was in August (as this is quiet month for CH engineers, I presume). When the first cold evenings came along, I turned on my boiler to find out that it wouldn`t start - showing a fault. At this time I did not link the fault with the free boiler check a couple of months before. I have called HomeServe - as I had a boiler cover with them, right? First thing I was asked was my credit/debit card number, so they could charge the excess, then I was told that an engineer would be coming in on Tuesday, while I made a call on Thursday AM ! I don`t need to explain that having a couple of small kids at home without CH and hot water would be a nightmare, I have borrowed some electric heaters from friends and used gas cooker to warm water to have some kind of a bath. On Sunday I managed to get my mate plumber to come and take a look at the boiler, to find out that the engineer appointed by HomeServe to carry on the boiler check, had damaged the water pressure cork in the boiler, as well as forgot to put some screws back on. My friend fixed it in about 20 minutes and I went back to normal warm home with hot water. My plumber friend suggested that these kind of faults my boiler had, cannot happen due to a mechanical breakdown or normal tear and wear. These were made by HomeServe appointed "engineer" - wheather deliberately or not - I don`t know. But please be aware. Thanks.

These cowboys should be renamed "Homeswerve" as they use every excuse in the book to not repair anything that goes wrong.

Regarding Drains, wasn't the law changed so you no longer need this (onus back on the provider) ?

owners responsibility to border of property. water boards after boundary, if this is the same company I read about the amount of get out clauses was unbelievable.

Only up to a point:

You still have responsibility for pipes within your own boundary.

any private drains which are shared with a neighbour(s) has become the responsibility of the water authority.

the did change only regarding the boundary if the drain is shared with a neighbour or runs off boundary its then the local water authority so this deal is worth it

Looks a good deal for first year, in particular the Home Serve 8 which includes a boiler service for £9.95 a month.

I get most of this with home insurance so not for me, but heat added.

bought this deal on website over three months ago. no excess. had leak on intake to cistern repaired and kitchen tap valve. called them once as was leaking from two isolator valves, had to put putty on for temporary repair. they turned up and said it's not leaking now so won't change valves.

Similar experience here. Homeserve subcontracted the boiler service to Home Energy Services (which they own), who spent the best part of a day on it and left it with a safety notice. This was, and still is, a Worcester Bosch with an impeccable record. I lost count of how many times they had to return to sort out the mess they made of my CH system, but it still isn't right and I'm now getting someone else in to sort out their mess.

No way will Homeserve or any company they use ever be allowed near my heating system again - and what goes for the heating system goes for the plumbing too. Corporate cowboys.

Took this offer out November last year 50p per month. Never thought i would use but called them a couple of weeks ago to sort out a blockage. Came next day sorted no fuss no forms no cost. Very pleased with service. Still going to cancel when my current offer runs out in a few weeks as not going to pay regular price.

25 Oct 16 2 #16
That's absolutely correct. I've had the water company unblock my drain three times now (for free) at the point where it joins the 'shared drain', even though it's within my own boundary.
nighatshan

I used these joker's a couple of years ago. I had a leak under my kitchen or back yard. United Utilities couldn't tell me where it was. they did their bit. then I called these guys. I explained that united Utilities had fixed the Stop tap outside my back yard but said there was a leak inside the yard, either under the yard or my kitchen. the lady I talked to sent someone round a few days later and as soon as he walked in through our door he was "told" by his office over his mobile that the leak was outside their boundary and they couldn't fix it as it was my responsibility not theirs. the pipes that were leaking were under my property and not joining to any other property or water supply. the "engineer" didn't even look or investigate. I think he probably saw a huge job and made his excuses and left because when I got a real plumber out he said it was a huge and costly job. ripoff cowboys. the programme "ripoff Britain" should look into these guys.
scottswaha
26 Oct 16 1 #18
No, not correct, where and after your drain is joined by another regardless of which property it is in, it is the responsibility of the water board.
jaques_kalis
26 Oct 16 1 #19
I have been using them for last 2 years. Got similar offer when i first joined. During the first year, I had 3-4 call outs for different leaks. Every time repair was done without any fuss. Second year price went up to full price. Haven't had to call them out this year so far..
My overall experience was ok with them

I look at it this way. If you don't have any such cover and you get plumbing issues ( leaks etc) ,
any plumber will charge you atleast 50 + parts for one visit. Plus you will have hassle of looking for
a plumber if an emergency.
So in a year if you end up calling plumber 3 or more times, you would be paying more than what you would have paid for this policy ( Full price) .
However at £6 for first year, it's no brainer.

I haven't had any issues besides the once when we had a leak behind the dishwasher and was told that they would sort the leak and put everything back. Apparently they never put things back but luckily got them to listen to the telephone conversation I had with the customer representative and so they had to oblige. I.e dishwasher and fittings.

Anyway not had any bad experiences with them from the 6 calls outs in 3 years. Maybe due to bring in Milton Keynes and the staff they have there.
shadey12
26 Oct 16 #21
i stand corrected, on my property it is the boundary as it doesn't join anyone elses, however when I looked at the "get outs" this company had, they would not have touched any problems, thanks for that though.

26 Oct 16 #22
I had it in my name for first 12 months, so I called up to cancel at the end, then they offered me a deal to stay, a bargain of about £60 for the year, I said could I not just cancel and rejoin for the £6, he said no as Im not a new customer. I asked if I could cancel and get my wife to rejoin at £6, he said yeah, so I did. Im sure someone had said in the past that if you arent a customer for 30 days or more, you can re-apply as a new customer, so Im hoping I can sign up again for £6!

Worst company I've ever had the mis fortune of using. Our policy covered everything on the property, we had a blocked drain coming from kitchen and they had every excuse under the sun not to even investigate let alone repair. Complete waste of money!!

I tried them last year and they were very helpful. I tried them out for a leaking kitchen tap and they arrived the same evening offering to replace the mixer tap as part of the call-out. When I asked if I could use my own one they told me just to call again. No problem since

I tried them last year with similar offer, they fixed kitchen pipe leak, toilet leak, replaced the inside of water tank, changed all the tap valves in kitchen and bathroom and washers. They were brilliant. If this was private job this would easily cost over £300.

27 Oct 16 #31
I took this out in March this year for £6. since then I've had I've had the kitchen tap replaced, downstairs toilet taps and flushing mechanism replaced, bathroom taps and flushing mechanism replaced, upstairs toilet flushing mechanism replaced, foul pipe were seriously blocked and we're totally cleaned out, kitchen sink leak fixed. they did mess up one incident and paid me £50 gesture of goodwill for any inconvenience and we're still selling a damage claim which they admitted liability for. probably cost them around £500. all in all its worked out pretty well. watching them I think I can fix most the problems next time myself.

Avoid Homeserve!

Recently had them out to fix a faulty pressure release valve. The engineer snapped the valve off leaving part sheared into my hot water cylinder and said "had a nightmare, but we don't cover hot water cylinders". They refused to cover the damage. Had to go through complaints policy to get just below Ombudsman level before they paid out for £1,400 of damage! Total cowboys

Has anyone with pitch-fibre drains made a claim with these guys? If so how did you get on? Apparently a number of insurers 'wriggle out' of claims to do with pitch-fibre drains :disappointed:

I took a similar deal out a while ago and I have had them out a few times with no hassle.
I also reported a fault that my elderly neighbour was struggling with but she didn't have any cover and they came out and sorted it out as a good will gesture. I thought this was absolutely brilliant!
lionkhan1
9 Nov 16 #40
I bought the same cover last year December. I had to call them twice. They came next day and fixed the problem within 30 minutes. No problems at all. Highly recommended.

I'll cancel the policy next month as not interested in paying the full price.
