I wouldn't call it a "fitness smartwatch" personally as it's so much more than that.

Got a red pebble time myself but heated for the price as it's a great starter smartwatch.

If you're not fussed about it being new, CEX sell these ones for £35 quid.

You need to shop in cloud cuckoo land to get that........

The cheapest UK purchased GPS smartwatch is made by Polar (M400) & retails for around £130......that is a budget model ......most decent GPS smartwatches start around £200 to about £400

You might get something cheap & unreliable unbranded from China for £70+

Depending on what you need for functionality on the smartwatch side, if it's just smartphone notifications, then some of the newer Garmin watches can do this, and have GPS included.

Sony SW3 is an Android wear, works with any android phone.
I have SW3 since last 4 months. Excellent smart + fitness watch. Inbuilt gps that works perfectly.
Does everything that it says on the tin.

GPS is essential in any watch if you want to use as fitness watch, might as well spend bit more and buy one with gps.

Also the lack of heart rate monitor (although can you add a chest strap?) means I wouldn't emphasise the fitness aspect strongly.

Advice please, can you play games and apps with this using an iPhone se, thinking now to get son this for xmas but I'm aware these watches don't play ball very well on iPhone, he's only 11 so the odd game and notification would be good. Much appreciated.
Dhowl
5 Oct 16 1 #14
@frostyclock not great for games, there are a few games you can download but very basic, but a great starter smart watch. Notifications from text, email, incoming calls and social media. Waterproof for swimming. 7 day battery life. Remotely Control Spotify or other music on his phone remotely whilst it's charging or in a speaker dock.
I've used mine with android and iPhone without issues

You know you could have gotten a pebble 2 for like 20 quid as they had a voucher deal with 10% off last month?

These are cheap because the pebble 2 that is an all round upgrade in every aspect and including a version with a HR sensor is coming in at the 90-100 and is out now(deliveries are this month). I'm upgrading my time to the new version, but honestly given they have released basically a 1:1 upgrade of the classic pebble it's not at all worth buying one for this price given you are only 20-30 quid less than the new ones.

As far as I'm concerned it's the only real fitness watch even without the HR sensor. Unlike all the other smart and fitness watches I've tried and seen pebbles are waterproof. They work great in the pool or out in open water, and they are fantastic if you are doing anything in the water as it frees you from having to risk an expensive phone in your pocket.

Yes, even new replaced had exactly the same issue after just 1 month. Amazon refunded without any problem
Szabster
5 Oct 16 1 #20
Gotta chime in on the display problem. First one started blinking uncontrollably, got it exchanged by pebble. Second one developed a fault after 4 months, this time around the screen falls to pixels. (applying pressure to the screen fixes it temporarily.

I think I'll wait for the pebble time two to replace it. I love my pebble but these screen issues almost ruined it for me.
The_Hypnotoad
6 Oct 16 1 #21
I loved my pebble until I had to speak to their customer service.

Firstly after a week of using it I found the rubber strap was rubbing on my arm and took the top layer of skin off under the strap. I asked if this was normal and was told "yes, if you want to stop the rubbing we suggest you buy a better strap for it".

Then after a bout 6 month the battery just went to crap, wouldnt last more than 2 days, if that. After about 10 emails back and forward I was told "we cant guarantee the battery life for the original pebble after the updates and if you have a full set of apps on the watch"

I went out and bought a fitbit and the pebble has been in my draw ever since.
lurch to The_Hypnotoad
6 Oct 16 1 #26
I had the exact same problem and assumed allergic reaction to rubber but never had that problem before so replaced strap with a canvas one.

My 1st pebble got the screen issue after a couple of months so was replaced, the 2nd one started not holding charge for more than a day and now the 3rd is having the screen issues.
swfarrington to The_Hypnotoad
6 Oct 16 #28
The battery on my time steel went to pot after only a couple of months. Can't fault their support as they'd sorted a replacement within a week.

As far as GPS watches I think the pebble 2 may be coming with one. Personally I have a dedicated sports watch for this purpose. Not sure I'd want my day watch sweated on from a long race !
HankHandsome

I had the original pebble for a while and didn't have any issues with it. Makes me wonder if a bad batch of them made it out into the wild.
DrunkSquirrel
6 Oct 16 #23
I've recently bought my teenage son one of these. He loves it. It's proven really useful for calendar events and texts as sometimes his phone is in a bag on silent. No more missed out of class lessons or travel updates.
HankHandsome to DrunkSquirrel
6 Oct 16 #25
The notifications aspect of it is one of the main things I like about it - quick glance at your wrist to see what's going on and on you go. No fishing your phone out of your pocket (or bag ) every time.

The main thing I like about it is the ability to control the music player remotely as well. I tend to use my iPhone more to listen to music on the go and it's an absolute godsend, espcially if you're on a crowded bus or train.

I've got a few apps installed on mine but not many - got a handy live football results app which is good for keeping up with current scores.
MissionaryMan
6 Oct 16 #24
I have this watch. Love it. Works like a charm. I bought it for £50 a while ago. Point of note, however, it's not a "fitness" watch. It doesn't sense any vital signs or measure steps.
Pistol to MissionaryMan
6 Oct 16 2 #30
It does measure steps, install the Misfit app (others may well be available too).

The pebble is a game changer for me. Nothing fancy, but it changed the way I use my iPhone. No more dragging it out of the pocket to see what that buzz was... oh it's just spam. And I don't miss calls or texts any more. And I can control music playback easily no matter what I'm doing. I love it to bits and wouldn't be without one now; really would like a Time 2, but they're so expensive - it'll be a long while before I upgrade.

Sorry, are you saying a Pebble 2 for £20 or for £20 more than the Pebble Classic?

That 10% deal is where I got the Pebble classic, I spotted the deal on here for the Pebble 2 for like £80 if I recall, then saw the site had the classic for £60. It was a gift and I only love that person £60 worth.

For those of you with the screen tearing issue (and can't return it), the fix is incredibly simple: Unscrew back, insert card/paper/whatever, screw back on.
I used this method on my own watch - no problems since!

Got a Garmin Vivoactive, very similar in specs, one of the best purchases I've ever made.
GPS running watch, waterproof swimming watch, bike mode, step counter, notifications for calls, messages and most apps, controls the music on my phone, phone finder, car finder, watch faces, can last weeks on one charge.
It doesn't have much in the way of apps, but I've got a phone for that, all I want on my wrist is the important stuff.

I'm hoping that by the time the pebble time 2 comes out, it'll work out well enough that i can get a decent trade-in price on my current pebble time at CEX to put towards it.

Pebble Classic or this for £20?
RebTheRebel
7 Oct 16 #56
The Pebble.
A friend at work had one of the ones you linked to. For £20, its features are pretty good and his battery lasted around 4 days before he had to charge it. It linked well with his android, but the thing is just plain ugly in real life. Don't let the pictures fool you. The screen quality is cheap and the thing is huge on the wrist. Top it off with the fact the thing is a scratch magnet.
Go for the pebble!

I used this as my first android watch but upgraded to a LG Urbane, but i use this watch for when I do DIY, Swimming, Cycling, or anything where I wouldnt wear my Urbane which is more of a dress watch, great thing is I turn it off when not using it and throw it in my bag and I get a month or twos usage before recharging, and recharging to full takes less than an hour.
mee09agh
8 Oct 16 #58
Honestly, i think its expensive at anything above £30. I got a "like new" condition pebble steel for £36 on ebay, and you could probably get a pebble steel in like new condition on ebay easily for this price. the build quality difference is massive, this plastic looks like a childrens watch and the pebble steel looks like a expensive branded watch with steel build.
xchaotic
9 Oct 16 #59
Is the steel version good for everyday carrying though? What's your opinion?
thetizzes
9 Oct 16 #60
I've had a pebble steel original for over a year. Wear it all day everyday, it looks great, is really useful at work for notifications without having to keep taking my phone out of the pocket. The leather band looks good as well. It looks more expensive than it's actual price. (I paid £99 in the O2 shop.) Was dubious about smartwatches, but the pebble works and I am looking at my phone less. These have reached the end of their update cycle, so only the newer watches are getting the 4.0 software - doesn't matter to me at the moment, I have all of the updates I need for now. It has a kind of art deco futurist feel if that makes sense.

This has no GPS, so useless for running or cycling. Isn't waterproof (water "resistant"), so useless for swimming. Doesn't have an optical HR sensor, so useless for general workouts.
