It's a long story and generally starts an argument of Nvidia vs AMD when mentioned on the internet.. but in a nutshell; the AMD will likely age slightly better as it has superior Vulkan and DX12 support currently due to architecture, hardware level async, etc but whether or not that actually translates to better performance within any meaningful time frame requires game developers making better use of DX12 / Vulkan features which will likely happen but whether it happens before the current gen cards are so old they're obsolete anyway is yet to be seen. AMD do tend to support their previous gen cards much longer than Nvidia with driver optimisations which can be significant if you always play the very latest games without the latest hardware. If you plan to keep your card for many years before upgrading again then the AMD is probably a better choice. That said, there are only a handful of DX12 / Vulkan games currently and that's not going to change overnight. Careful of calling anything 'futureproof' as it's not really possible no matter what anyone tells you. There are also other direct comparisons to make as mentioned such as power, heat, etc which tend to favour the Nvidia cards, as well as DirectX11 support being far superior on the Nvidia cards which is most games out currently.
That is the VERY much shortened version and it was still pretty long :P
Hope that helps a bit anyway

The problem with handing AMD the DX12 'crown' is that it assumes that AMD had a good DX11 implementation.
AMD has terrible DX 11 performance. NVIDIA has great DX11 performance. The 'gains' that AMD has seen in DX12 is simply showcasing how *absolutely abysmal* their DX11 is.
Comparing yourself to your own failing, it makes it look as if AMD have done something great with DX12, when all it means is that DX11 wasn't great.
Neither AMD nor NVIDIA have implemented even half of DX12, and if we go by the features list of DX12, NVIDIA is ahead in supported features. They split the new titles for best performance at a similar hardware level.
The 1060 and the 480 trade blows depending on the DX12 title. ROTR goes NVIDIA, Hitman goes AMD.
TL;DR Don't just hand AMD the DX12 crown. Their DX11 was so bad, it makes their DX12 look good, but it doesn't mean that.

Good price if this is a JetStream version. I order one. We will see what they selling. If this is a Dual Fan version i will send it back. Maybe as a gest of goodwill they can exchange it for free as their description and photos are totally confused.

Good point, especially about the cooling. My old R9 280x would get to ridiculous temperatures for some games.

How would this card compare to an RX 480? I know a lot of people talk about "future proofing" with the 480, but this card seems to do better in all of the tests I've seen.
Is there a chance that the 480 could seem the better card in future? Or is this likely to be continue to perform better?
balvi to bccben

I was thinking to get the 480 but i like that 1060 consume less Watts and it is much much cooler. that is for me more important than actual future proofness.

Should be fine, that card is a standard 2 slot cooler so it will only cover one of the other PCIE slots on your board meaning you can still use PCIEX_2 slot for your wireless card.
Yeah most do have zero RPM mode but not all. The KFA2 / Galax cards don't IIRC. The MSI Gaming X and the Inno3d ichill X3 are probably the two quietest 1060's there are, although some others are extremely quiet too. Lots to choose from so it's definitely best to do as much research as possible beforehand. Good luck!

Definitely not going down the AMD route again, and although DX:MD is built on Glacier 2/Dawn, I'm just not a big fan of the cards. I've never had issues with Nvidia, so will be sticking with them.
Currently I'm comparing it to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 3GB, and based on the comparison tables I've seen, there isn't a huge difference in game performance between the 3GB and 6GB models, but getting the 6GB for the same sort of price might make sense. I also believe some have custom fan settings (turned off until card hits 50°), and some don't have that at all. I guess I'd need to investigate before buying, because noise output is key here.
derp1664

The inno3d card is essentially silent, even under load. The cooler is overkill for a 120W card like the 1060 (it's the same cooler as used on their GTX1080) so that means the temps and noise levels are really great. Out of the box the card will probably max out at around 60c when gaming and that's with the fans spinning around 900RPM which is absolutely inaudible (and they have zero RPM mode for the fans to stop spinning at idle). If you want a quiet card you certainly won't be disappointed with that one.
It does have a 3gb model being released yes, available for pre-order currently.
Which card did you want to compare it to? The Jetstream? Neither will be loud by any stretch of the imagination. Probably the inno3d slightly quieter overall due to the extra fan enabling lower RPM under load. Reviews state the Jetstream is quick to ramp up the RPM of the fans so without setting a custom curve it will certainly be louder (http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/94828-palit-geforce-gtx-1060-super-jetstream/?page=11)
For Deus Ex Mankind Divided actually AMD cards run a fair bit better due to it being built on a modified Glacier 2 Engine which heavily favours AMD. Not too many silent RX 480's out there though currently, they are certainly hotter and louder in general due to higher TDP.

Other options:
The Gigabyte GeForce® GTX 1060 Mini ITX OC 6G is available from Laptops Direct for £219.97 +£4.95 delivery using the Which trial code. It's silent in idle mode (fan turns off) and the twin direct heatpipes keep the temps no more than 65 during the gaming I've done since I got mine last week + can't hear the fan, it's overclocked by default and it's compact...couldn't be more pleased, why pay more?
Any idea how quiet this card is, in comparison to the ichill card? Seems like a very decent price for the 6GB model. I'm primarily looking for something to run Deus Ex Mankind Divided on very decent settings. There are so many variations out there, it gets very confusing. I've got a couple of SSDs (OS and gaming), so keeping the GPU very quiet will be a bonus. Does this card come in a 3GB model out of interest?

Is it worth upgrade to this from a Msi r9 390 card?
arealmentalist to wolfy001
30 Oct 161#14
absolutely not. Keep your card the performance difference isn't worth the price at all.
Don't forget about the Inno3d ichill X3 1060 then, extremely cool & quiet card. No mention of it on that link for some reason which is surprising. Often tops out at high 50's - low 60's (C) out of the box and extremely quiet too.

If money is no object, then the ASUS Strix 1060's are probably the 'best'. Although their prices are fairly close to some 1070 so kinda hard to justify IMO.
A very good card is the Inno3d ichill X3 1060, very good cooler and cheaper than the ASUS strix cards although still quite pricey atm.
The EVGA ACX3.0 1060 cards (unreleased as yet) will likely be very good as EVGA are top notch for nvidia cards.
Some of the Palit 1060's are good (the jetstream and the pheonix versions), the 'Dual' version is cheap and not terrible.
MSI Gaming X 1060 cards are solid but pricey. MSI Armor version I'm not familair with for the 1060 specifically but are usually pretty good value.
The Zotac Amp edition for the 1060 is not great tbh they cheaped out on the cooler a little too much it seems. Unusual as Zotac are often good.
The Gigabyte 1060's are very good and competitively priced.
KFA2 cards are usually great, I assume their 1060's are no different.
Maybe some I've forgotten let me know. Hope that helps a bit anyway
anyone know if this would fit in a falcon volcano case? really want to upgrade my 750 but im worried about space because I have a wireless pci card underneath my gfx card too, and usb wireless adapters suck.
derp1664 to asapmarko1
30 Oct 16#17
The Jetstream is a triple slot cooler so any expansion cards directly beneath are likely to be a problem.
Your case 'Falcon Volcano' never heard of it.. GameMax Volcano? If so that appears to be a full ATX case so assuming you have an ATX motherboard (and not MATX / ITX) then your wireless adapter could be moved to another slot not directly beneath the GPU?

Both the Gigabyte G1 1060 and the Palit Jetstream 1060 are very good. The Palit is a triple slot cooler so be sure you have space. Be careful with this offer though as it seems to be for the Palit 'Dual' 1060 not the Jetstream (see my post above) in which case the Gigabyte is superior. I would recommend checking with box.co.uk for confirmation
derp1664
30 Oct 16#11
No problem.
Yep that's an ACX one, must have just released as I've been following the EVGA press releases. Not a great price though as that's getting close to some 1070's. All 1060's to consider should be <£300 IMO
I think this maybe a listing error on their site; the part number listed is NE51060015J9-1061D which correlates to the Palit 1060 Dual (ie. an inferior version)
Here's a 6 GB Zotac for the same £230, though as I said above I'm not very sure on brand differences. But just going off the fact that you said Zotac, hopefully this helps you out.
