bought one earlier, added 16 GB RAM for 66 pounds and i3 CPU from eBay for 45 pounds. Runs VSphere without any problems.

If you want bigger than you would be much better off with the Xeon powered Dell T20 for a little more.

I ordered (from eBuyer in the end, for the 6% Quidco cashback) yesterday (30th), and have just discovered that it's not being delivered until tomorrow (Nov 1st) - even though the page on eBuyer said "next day" delivery (with no qualifier for Sunday orders). Fingers crossed HP will be lenient when I submit the cashback form...

I dont like mine anymore its too noisy since i put 2x 3tb hard drives in it. got a graphics card and upgraded to 16gb ram and an i3 3240. far too loud nothing i can do about it. looking for a replacement like the dell t20 but really want a lenovo ts140 but they are loads of money. I wouldn't recommend one of these to anyone anymore too unpredictable with noise levels

you need to look for ram that is ecc it will need the E on the end like 12800e. if it has r its no good. look around on facebook forums i got 16gb for £20 6 months ago. my i3 3240 did make a massive difference. i bought a whole pc with the cpu and 1tb hard drive for £50 swapped the cpu with the g1610t and swapped the 1tb with a 500gb i had and sold on for £50 to get my money back there is an i5 cpu that is cheap that will use esxi properly cant remember model though

Must admit I've gone off these, they aren't the bargain the old models were and after you've kitted it out with drives, RAM etc. you might as well build something yourself.

depends what you use the gen 7 for mine couldnt keep up with htpc duties and other stuff so gave to my sister she only uses it as a htpc which i jump on every now and then to update and i get constant up to date offsite backup using crashplan perfect

Here's the upgrade guide I used. Took me about 15-20 mins to do. In there the author says the i3 is 65% more powerful than the G1610T.

​No it was fine. i have looked into it the graphics card can increase it a bit. it was runnig quiet until i put the two 3tb hard drives in they run hotter than my old drives and the ilo makes the fan run faster other people have a lot more powerful cpus in and are fine i cant afford to change my hard drives to make it queiter and which ones would i go for. if i take out the drives it is quiet again look around and you will see noise and fan problems its a design fault

Absolutely not a design fault, the machine is merely compensating for the increased heat loading, the more heat you dissipate within the case the more it needs to exhaust out! If the drives are running really hot then this is the issue not the machine.

good machine ... re fan noise.. the fan for some reason, is linked to the inbuilt raid controller, if you dont use your drives thru the b120i the fan will run at something like 26% (a bit noisy( whereas if you run your disks thru the RC the fan will drop back to 6% after startup. the disks can be set as jbod rather than any "real" raid. I might be completely wrong ofc. the other thing about heat is that the i3 will only give out 55w when running at 100% thats pretty rare on my machine.

Update: the cash back is up to £60 now on the microserver and the ML10 gen9 until end of Jan.

Has anyone tried moving a drive from N54L to one of these?
It was fine to stick os from N40L into N54L and it booted without issues, but there are more differences i guess this time.

install looks easy just swapping the CPU and applying thermal paste so not sure why it will void warranty!?

The xeon version has a better heatsink if you can find it for sale it is massively expensive.

118 in total inc vat when going for 9.99 delivery and 60 cash back. maths on here is superb. Anyway the small print of cash back deal says must be invoiced and delivered by 31st Oct so I don't want to risk it and not going for this

Looked at this but thought I could do better by compromising a little. Found a xeon E5506 (nehalem, so first of the i3/5/7 lines) with 16GB registered ecc ddr3 (registered is important because that stuff's way cheaper than just ecc), 12 x 3.5" drive bays for £95.

Net result is more CPU power and the option for a second CPU, very similar efficiency but more overall power consumption, more RAM and greater maximum RAM capacity, 3x more drive bays, 4 NICs for 2x the bandwidth, a bigger chassis and all for the price of a microserver on a good day. Since I wanted drive bays and NICs but cared less for size this was ideal.

i have just bought something similar but the gen8 has three nics one for ilo and two normal. my limitation was putting a graphics card in for light gaming a gtx 750ti will go in but makes the server hot and noisy good little thing if used as a server but otherwise would save a bit more and get a dell t20

Doesn't have to be ECC does it? I know the dell server I bought recently you can use either and mix and match!

​This server will not take Non ecc memory it must be ecc thats why you look for ram with the e on the end otherwise i would have used non ecc and so many others on homeservershow forum

You getting the ML10 or the microserver? Personally I'd get the ML10 as its much faster, additionally the extra PCI means it would make a much better whole house PVR TV server.
