I'm in 2 minds about posting this but here goes....

I've just had the BG engineer around to check out my boiler as I am going on the Home Care package. Whilst he was here he offered me a Hive Active Heating 2 and Boiler plus installation for £149.99. I hummed and harred and did a quick search online and thought "ok why not". He is coming back at 3pm today to install as I have a doctors appointment to go to at midday. I asked him 3 times to confirm and he has assured me it is "the latest Hive out the Hive 2" I will post pictures after installation today.

UPDATE. ENGINEER IS HERE. showed me the offers, best price is 149.00 and it is the Hive 2 with hub and stat to control heating and boiler. working on it now, pics to follow.

all done and working top notch. synched with ECHO as well but apart from telling here to increase and decrease room temperature for not that is all it appears she can do. Well pleased with the scheduling and the HIVE app had a good play around. Did I need it - no as my honeywell controller was fairly new. Am I glad I got it, -yes it looks cool and I like the more control I have. thanks guys.

I know people are jumping up and down about this, but I still don't see the point. For me the thermostat works in the background. having setup days, times, temperature etc it should work 24x7 without any intervention and without bothering me with alerts or anything.

happy for you if you want a sophisticated intelligent system installed for turning a boiler on/off but not for me. thanks.

Sounds like a Virgin Media deal where you might need to track down an engineer in your area who can offer you something.... Unless of course anybody has any links. I'm considering installing in a new place i'm moving into but think i require two zones as their is underfloor heating downstairs.

I'm guessing Hive works with the IFTTT app as well, which is cool.
bma1445
4 Oct 16 3 #34
I was sceptical at first too - and I'm a gadget freak.

If I forget to turn the heating off when I leave, it reminds me. If I'm out longer than I expect, or come back sooner, I can change the temp so I don't come back to a cold house/heat up an empty house. Also, there's little things, like not having to get out of bed to turn up the temperature.

It also works with Amazon Echo, but in my case since everyone here uses iOS, I've setup HiveKit (https://github.com/njpatel/hivekit), which means I can just say "hey Siri, turn the heating up to 20 degrees".

It's definitely not something you *need*, but it's nice to have. Keep an eye on Amazon Warehouse deals too - I paid £80 for mine from there, and it took about 20 minutes to install myself.

You can also integrate it nicely with IFTTT. Like saying turn the heating on when the outside temperature drops below a certain temperature.

We go to stay with my wife's family at Christmas, in Norn Iron. It's always a rush when leaving the house. Last year I forgot to turn the heating and water off, but I just did it from the app after getting to the airport. I am not saying that it paid for itself in one week, but it was a convenience feature that I appreciated. It is also nice to be able to turn the heating ON a few hours before we got home, so we didn't get back to a cold house.

Am I missing something or... where is this deal?

Do I have to sign up to a HomeCare package then ask the engineer when they eventually come round? a HomeCare package surely more than wipes out the £100 saving.

I already have Hive v1 (got it free a couple years back for switching to a cheaper BG tarriff) but I'm about to move to a new house so considering getting it again.
djlondon22 to s24adm
4 Oct 16 #40
true. however i also got the homecare on a 20% off via sainsbury's. you're right is it a deal? yes because I'm guessing im not the only one having a BG engineer knock on my door for one reason or another and it could be a case of being aware that an offer is available might help out one fellow member. £249 online, If they are already at your property doing a repair they can do it for £200, as no need for the extra £49 call out/installation charge, however if there is a 'fault' with your controls they can do it with authorisation for £149.

No. Someone has written some software referred to in an earlier post (hivekit), but according to the GitHub page it won't currently work as hive have updated their API.

4 Oct 16 2 #49
Had this on a dual zone system for about a year. Its good and works well. The official app is easy to use. It isnt as intuitive or useful as some internet thermostats e.g. with many you can say 'I want the upstairs to be 21 degrees by 6am' and it uses the outside temperature and knowledge of how long your system takes to come to heat to work out when it should turn the heating on. With Hive you just set the actual on/off times. Setting holiday mode via the app is useful as it turning the system on earlier or off if I'm going to be home early/late. The version 2 thermostats here look good and you can get colour co-ordinated surrounds from Hive. At this price I would recommend it. Be aware you need the Hive Hub plugging into your router.

4 Oct 16 #53
Could the engineer advise how to get this price elsewhere please?
Searcher2
4 Oct 16 #54
Everyone has different needs. I have a holiday let property which is more than an hours drive away. Someone books at the last minute... Easy - just put the heating on schedule remotely. Once they have left put it onto frost protection. Customers change the setting to manual override... Again easy to change back to schedule ready for the next customer.

I do have a Honeywell on my own house as a 'luxury' buy. I don't keep regular hours so a programmed timer will be heating the house when I am not in. I can just switch the heating on when I leave work. The Honeywell has the benefit of being able to cope with multiple room temperatures but is more expensive

Doesn't this do what a wireless thermostat would do? I can programme times and stuff on my Honeywell one. Only difference would be the turning on lights whilst I'm away, but doesn't a timer plug not do that?

I have the Hive thermostat & hub at my home. I did have a new Worcester boiler fitted through British Gas at the time as my old boiler had it days months ago. Brilliant gadget. I have added things like the Hive light bulbs and motion sensors and the hive plug. All working through the hub. I love being able to control the heating, turn on & off the lighting etc etc all from the app on my phone/iPad.
Like I said IMO a brilliant setup and I for one can't recommend it enough.

Not out of the box.

I had a Nest installed in February free of charge by Npower. Not something I had ever been bothered about but as it was due to a trial thing they offered me I said yes.
Now I have had it I wouldn't be without it.
We have a fairly typical house I would say. Mon - Thur during day house is empty usually and then Friday wife is off with youngest. Weekends can vary from out all day to lazy weekends.
Set the app on both mine and the wifes phone it detects you are 'away' so temporarily shuts down.
You can force it away if you are going to be away for a longer period of time if just a day or whatever.
It detects the weather outside and the temperature inside so we have it set up for 20C at 16:15 for when collecting the kids back from school and so if particularly cold it would maybe switch auto detect and switch the heating on from 15:30 so it was 20C for when we walked in at 16:15.
I guess this technically means you are using more energy but not got the who oooh it is cold it will be ok in 30 mins or so scenario.

Same thing in the winter mornings set for 6:15 and it will warm to 18C for that time so you are not waking to a cold house.

Ultimately it is a bit of a gadget but I think you will find it extremely useful once you have had it.
draganov464 to trickytree
5 Oct 16 1 #92
We have had this for a while now, I find it useful to turn the heating on and off when on way home from work in winter. Or to control the wireless lights which we bought to give illusion we are home and have set to go on and off on timers, but muck around with the times when we are away from home on holidays etc.

Its a nice to have for the gadget minded. I am happy with it, but sure not everyone will want it.

Use the app on the phone (IOS and now Android) to turn heating up or down without getting up etc.

Also noted they do new coloured mood lighting wifi enabled bulbs which is controlled by the app, necessary no... but may do it anyway.

Hi, I did ring BG this morning tying to get the offer and they said it was only £149 if an engineer is on-site, says your boiler controls are dead, rings them for authorisation, then they can offer the £149 price. He said other than that the best price is paying £249 on their website and claiming £50 back post install.
I would really like one of these as we have a combi boiler but no thermostats - so I assume we would save straight away!
Has any one got the £149 price without an engineers say so and if so how?
Many thanks in advance.

Bloke said to get the reduced price of £149 I would need to be a Homecare customer. HOWEVER, the deal is available ONLY IF an engineer has to attend to fix a fault with the boiler. No fault to attend to - no deal.

The only offer is Hive fully installed for £249 with £50 cashback making it £199 or upgraded for £199 with £40 cashback making it £159
