As long as its not London as its far worse than Glasgow
If you stay in Las Palmas itself, amazing 4km of beach in the city and plenty of shops and restaurants too. If you just want the sun, go to the south coast where it's always sunnier. The beach and sand dunes in Maspalomas are awesome if you can find somewhere to stay in that area.

Puerto De Mogan is a beautiful place to stay, very picturesque. Carries my recommendation. It's on the South of the island so is a few degrees warmer than the North. Only downside is that it's not that central but with car rental it's not a problem (It's connected by the autopista).
If visiting GC, I can't recommend enough the following activities: AstroGC and Sky Rebels

If it helps there is also Edinburgh to Gran Canaria 15th Nov to 22nd Nov for £79.96 this price is for 2, so less than £40 per head.
