Don't think its the corporates being greedy though it maybe a minimal factor. The pound has completely tanked since Brexit vote. Buying almost anything will incur a greater cost to somebody as the pound has less value outside the UK- if not the customer, then the suppier/manufacturer. Fuel cost to transport goods (Made in the UK or outside) and raw goods if buying outside the UK costs will be higher as the pound is valued less. Maintaing the low prices we've been used to when the pound was where is was simply wont be sustainable. It's maths. Its ecomomics.

The little bit of Marmite they sell is a drop in the ocean to them, but they are still trying to charge us more for it, unjustifiably so when the exchange rate gives them a massive pay day. I presume you work for them or are some sort of anti Marmite pro multinational food conglomerate troll.

But if the costs of production of Marmite in the UK have risen 10% why should they be expected to not make their customers pay 10% more? They have a legal responsibility to their shareholders to maximise their profitability.

Most people know how most big business works. It's called make as much money and pay as little tax as you can get away with. Given this was clearly an opportunistic offer from Iceland, its clear there will have been very little stock in the stores. I often wonder whether these offers with limited stock are ultimately positive or negative for the retailer given how many customers go into the store and see an empty shelf where the "free" products are supposed to be.

I read the Mail article. It is quite clear the Unilever was attempting a blanket 10% increase on many of their products, where they make a 15% company margin against retailers' 1.5 - 1.8%. The simplest way to keep their prices down is to stop buying their products. Who wants Marmite anyway? Free or not.

I went into Iceland around 8:30am and went straight to the Marmite in case it ran out, then bought a couple of things on offer. I went to the tills around 10 - 12 mins later, at which point the cashier said to the gentleman behind me in the queue, "Oh that must have been the last jar she got", and then called out to her colleagues, there's definitely none left there on the shelf is there? Weird thing is that when I picked it up there were about 8 to 10 jars on the shelf. Not even 6 people would have been through the tills whilst I was shopping... It seemed like they had hidden the jars in the back, although obviously I can't say for sure. The lady at the till seemed shocked I had got to the till with 1.

Where do you usually shop? Waitrose, Marks and Sencer? Iceland is the best shop in my town.

No, I think you've misunderstood. I agree that weak Sterling makes imports into this country more expensive-both the feed-in costs of raw materials and labour, and further transport costs compound the issue. However, Marmite is domestically produced using the waste products from UK (not just Burton-on Trent) breweries, and is virtually all sold in Britain (have you ever seen Marmite sold abroad-I have, once in a very expensive NY store catering for ex-pats). As a result, there is no exposure to the Euro, and Unilever's arguments fall flat. Their balance sheet may be converted to Euros, and result in a smaller P/L on this part of their portfolio, but as their labour/raw material/transport costs will also have fallen in real terms, they have no argument... Also, I don't recall Unilever (or Tesco, for that matter) ever offering to droop their prices when Sterling was rampant...

Just out of curiosity, how many people actually found any Marmite in Iceland? From reports here I'd guess hardly anybody. As somebody said, this is becoming Marmitegate. :wink:

You're right, it was originally made from the waste yeast sludge from the breweries in Burton. But they get it from all over the country now that Burton has lost all but two breweries. The price renegotiation with Tesco was not just for Marmite, it was for something like 40 other Unilever brands too. It's just that Marmite is the one the media fixated upon.

I would love to know what the terms of the deal were. Though I bet it is exactly what both sides had in mind at the start. I suspect the whole charade was a clever piece of public opinion manipulation on the part of Tesco. Lot's of the pro-brexiteers are still completely of the opinion, bizarrely, that there will not be, or should not be, any impact on their incomes or outgoings due to Brexit. But, of course, there will. In the first instance there will be price inflation due to the drop in the value of Sterling. Tesco knows that they are going to have to put up prices, and they know that the people who are in denial about the costs of Brexit will not accept the real reason - the drop in the pound - but instead blame "profiteering". By pulling the Unilever products from the online store they have created publicity that has shown that the price rise is coming from the supplier and not themselves. They have shifted the misguided "profiteering" blame from themselves and onto Unilever. Quite brilliant really.

I can see it from both Tesco's and Unilever's point of view. If it costs more to import good into the UK then common sense should tell you that prices should go up. However what irks me is that prices werent lower when the £ was higher.

Also perhaps manufacturers should consider not closing UK factories to move production abroad (I'm looking at you Cadburys! :man:)

Just got badly stung by buying the paper and trying three Icelands, all of which were OOS. Spent a few quid on petrol too going between these..

To put the icing on the cake, the corner shop refused me a refund on the paper.

So all in all - 90 minutes wasted, and a fiver in fuel/paper, not to mention the stress and harassment caused the argument with the greedy shopkeeper..

This was an absolute swizz-I visited a total of four different shops yesterday (I just happened to drive past 'em all-fortunately I didn't go out of my way, nor waste money on fuel)... One store didn't even have any Marmite on display, and the other three all claimed that they'd been sent between four and six jars for this promotion, all of which had gone by mid-morning... I live in rural Cambridgeshire, so these weren't inner-city branches, which must have 'sold out' first thing... I should speculate this is tantamount to fraud on the promoter's behalf... Remember the Hoover 'free flights' fiasco?.. They only backed down and agreed to honour their committment when the government threatened to step in...

It's blatantly obvious that this promotion was fixed right from the outset. What's not yet clear is whether it was fixed by the Mail, Iceland, or (more likely) both - I imagine both parties to this knew exactly how many 'free' jars would be given out, and how many purchasers of the Mail would therefore be disappointed.

The only surprise is that this story hasn't yet made it to the BBC or one of the papers (obviously not the Mail) - or to MSE, which usually publishes rip-off stories like this.

Maybe the answer is that the average Mail reader isn't bright enough to realise that (s)he's been conned - or that Marmite is just a little bit too, what shall we say, black, for his or her tastes? :neutral_face:

Contacted Iceland customer services and they just kept repeating the 'subject to availability' excuse. Refused any goodwill gesture such as issuing a new voucher, gift card or 'rain cheque' to honour the coupon when stock was replenished but admitted to having received many complaints. Daily Mail customer services said there was very limited availability and were logging complaints to indicate areas affected. Very poor reflection on Iceland's marketing department to come up with such a promotion without bothering to ensure adequate stock levels. Everyone should write to Iceland's MD, Malcolm Walker, and ask him how he intends to restore his company's reputation.

If you complain to the Advertising Standards Authority it only takes about 10 minutes on their website http://www.asa.org.uk. The complaints process will waste hours and hours of the executive's time at the Daily Mail and Iceland as they have to provide loads of detailed information about how they calculated the anticipated demand and the actual number of jars in store. I previously complained to the ASA about a Morrisons 3 For £10 wine promotion where the stock ran dry on day 1 of a 10 day promo. Here is the ruling (complaint upheld). I will complain to the ASA and hopefully it will occupy Iceland's Marketing director for a few weeks and prevent him dreaming up any similar 'freebies'.

They (Daily Mail) will care when the ASA contact them as they are responsible for the legitimacy of the promotion because they promoted it. They cannot simply say 'nothing to do with us'. This is why I don't generally buy the Daily Mail, they have no values.

Both Iceland and Daily Mail are to blame for this fiasco. Daily Mail to increase sales and Iceland to attract more customers in their shops. Contrast this scam marketing by Iceland with a similar Daily Mail promotion this weekend by Lego and WH Smiths. Unlike Iceland, WHS have lots of extra copies of the newspaper in store together with sufficient stock of the free Lego toy to meet the anticipated demand......Iceland take note of how it should be done....providing less than 10 jars in only some of your stores reflects very badly on how you care for your customers. Many of Iceland's promotions and special offers tend to also run out way before the promotion period ends.

Back on the shelves now - and plenty of it too. This particular store had just 8 available on Friday morning, according to the manager, and I'm not convinced even that's the truth. Iceland have been, and are still being, very deceitful about this promotion - and probably hoping that it doesn't turn into a news story. Some of us have other ideas. :wink:

The Sun had a free pizza offer a few weeks ago (in Iceland ) on a Saturday .Went to Iceland around 11am freezer was half full of all available varieties .Assistant was topping up the stock. 3 of us picked up our free pizzas while I was there.
Mostly a Sun reader area .I think the Mail was at fault as no problem with Sun offer.

Iceland are to blame as they must have asked the Daily Mail to advertise their name on the front page to take advantage of the Tesco/Unilever supply disruption.

Only a small fraction of the people with vouchers managed to get a jar - because Iceland took most of the stocks off the shelves in advance to limit the number of free jars.

There are complaints about it all over their social media pages, but at the moment they're just burying their silly heads in the sand and hoping it will all go away.

It won't - there are enough of us around to put them through a great deal of time, trouble, aggravation and sheer bad publicity if they won't back off, admit they were wrong, apologise, and dish out some appropriate goodwill gestures.

Nice to see that we're all taking different routes to get to the same end. Don't give up - I intend to make sure that Iceland learn a lesson from this, and it will cost them considerably more than a few goodwill gestures! Always a pleasure to tackle companies like Iceland that think they can cheat their customers. :laughing:

My local store manager has had many complaints from customers and was apologetic. He agreed to redeem the voucher when new supplies arrive. So other disappointed customers may be able to negotiate the same goodwill gesture from their store. Also awaiting a ruling from the ASA regarding misleading advertising.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is carrying out an investigation into Associated Newspapers (publishers of the Daily Mail) 'Free' Marmite promotion. Associated Newspapers Ltd are the promoter of this offer (not Iceland) so The Daily Mail who has so far responded to their readers saying it is 'nothing to do with them' are about to discover it has everything to do with them. They will be required to account in actual number of jars of Marmite per Iceland store how the promotion was conducted. This will waste hours and hours of their time. They will try and maintain it was Iceland's fault, but as they were the promoter of the offer it was up to the Daily Mail to ensure jars were actually available across a reasonable geographic spread of Iceland stores otherwise the complaints will be upheld.

However if the ASA upholds the complaints the Daily Mail will not be fined, they will not have to refund any purchaser of the newspaper who hoped to exchange the voucher for a 'free' jar of Marmite, nor will the Daily Mail have to give anyone a large 'free' 500g jar of Marmite.

And Iceland will also be involved in a lot of time wasting very soon if they don't agree to issue a voucher to cover the cost of the 'lost' Marmite. I love exercises like this where companies try to save themselves a few quid in cash but waste thousands in lost time and bad publicity. :smiley:

The Advertising Standards Authority still hasn't reached a decision about whether this advertising was 'decent, honest and truthful'. They've been thinking about it for 6 months. Yesterday I tweeted the CEO at the ASA (GuyParker2) and he promised to look into the delay. Shortly afterwards I received an email promising a response by May. You'll see from my post #196 I wasn't expecting much from the ASA and I wasn't disappointed. The Daily Mail and Iceland are laughing all the way to the bank. Don't complain, boycott them. I haven't bought the Mail since, or been to Iceland.

I took a different route, pushed Iceland hard on the way it had been handled, and received £25 from them as an apology.

7th June 2017 - 8 months later The Advertising Standards Authority finally got arounnd to ruling this stunt broke the advertising rules - it wasn't 'legal, decent, honest and truthful'.

Before you ask - as with all ASA rulings, no one gets fined, no one gets a free jar of Marmite. If you don't like the Daily Mail and Iceland as a result don't spend your money with them.
