This won't be for everyone, but still a cracking deal nonetheless...
For a limited time, grab yourself a free Xbox One S 500GB with FIFA17 when you purchase any qualifying Microsoft Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book.
This offer seems to be available direct from Microsoft Store also.

I'll tell what is dumb, someone who sees a headline figure of £970 and then can't deduct £230 (the value of the Xbox) from that to get the true purchase price, even if we ignore Quidco and any cashback you might get from a credit card. We can all play the waiting game, sure there's something better coming along, but one thing you can be sure, with the latest comes a premium price, and as soon as that's released, there will be something better in the pipeline next month, next year or whenever.
At some point if you have a need, you have to purchase the equipment, you can't wait for the next great thing coming along, at this point in time the Surface Pro 4 with an i5 bought from Currys is probably the lightest and best value tablet you can get, providing you need the i5. Otherwise maybe it's worth waiting.
The fact that MS didn't announce the kaby lake powered surface, suggests either it's not the step change some seem to believe, or that it's not available now, which is perhaps more believable, but if you're going to wait until early 2017, why not wait even longer for Cannonlake? Personally I want the power today, and I'm not waiting 4 months plus to get a 10% boost to performance and maybe, though it's open to debate, 7-10% more battery life.
You make the mistake of telling people what to do, when you've got no idea of their need, yeah maybe you can wait in your personal position, but many can't and maybe will see this deal as an ok machine plus free christmas present, ok machine and something they would have purchased free, or an ok machine at a good price once the free gift is sold.
As for Thunderbolt 3, that can wait until I refresh my equipment in 3+ years time, how long has USB3 been out, and how many devices support that at full speed? Thunderbolt is yet more tech. that will require converters to make it work with everything we own today, doesn't really provide any benefit, since USB3 is still easily capable of managing all my peripherals.

Just to trying to keep things concise
It probably helps if I add that the Surface Pro doesn't come with a keyboard/dock and the Surface Book does. It also has a battery and a gpu built into the dock which is why it is quite a bit more expensive.

It is not the Surface Book pro. It is just the Surface Pro. The Surface Book and the Surface Pro are completely different devices.

I've had mine for a day now, should have been 5 but for the incompence of DPD, a long story, and I had to go to some lengths to get it at all.
The machine is pretty fast, certainly comparable to my i7 on normal tasks, i.e. not running benchmarks, it's way faster than my Core M Dell Venue Pro.
The screen is very clear and very bright. For my eyesight, I've set it to scale at 175% (default was 200%) which gives me a great viewing area, some apps Photoshop CS6 seem to be incapable of scaling, but in reality this isn't a bad thing for a photo editor since you see more of your photos if they're not scaled, if that's how it works.
Battery life is better than my Core M, despite this not being a particularly power efficient CPU, especially when playing video.
Weight is roughly the same as the Venue, but it's got a nicer, bigger screen and is slimmer because it doesn't need a protective case.
I've got the fingerprint keyboard case, and it's by far the best keyboard I've used on a tablet, I can touch time as fast as my laptop or any full size keyboard, ok, it's expensive, but you'd pay a premium for a good keyboard and perhaps a tenner for a protective case, so is probably only 50% over priced (buy from Amazon for a better price than the high street shops).
Then there are the nice touches, the power brick uses a figure of 8 connector, so much easier to get leads if you need a different plug, a cloverleaf design lead is not that easy to find outside of maplin like shops, not so easy when in a foreign country. Perhaps the single most useful nice touch, the power brick has a usb charging port, so when out and about no need to take an additional charger for your phone or no need to block the single onboard usb port.
Is it worth £971 (i5/8GB/256GB), probably not, but nock the £200 for the Xbox, then definitely yes, there's a premium of £100 over the next best tablet with similar spec, but I think that's too many compromises.
I think this machine is likely to become my main system, it's close enough in capabilities to my i7 laptop, with the added benefits of touch and higher resolution screen.

I pulled the trigger on the SB last night. The i5/256/dGPU. Pretty happy. 10% discount further 7.35% through TCB and the free Xbox which will offset another 200. Means I am paying around £1150 for it which is a great price considering I have had my eye on one for a month now.

She kept saying the price I saw didn't include the xbox / was the surface when discounted. I gave up and bought the same deal from Argos. 971, xbox included.
Have to try get it to Ireland now. With the current rate / no similar offers here it's so much more expensive. My sister is taking delivery and will bring back for me.

Just a word of warning, make sure you use a different browser or clear all cookies when trying cashback via Microsoft store.
They failed to pay out hundreds of pounds of cashback via TCB last year even though I went through all the correct processes.
TCB were trying to be helpful when I submitted a claim but it took months to try and get a response, then they turned around and said that Microsoft had declined the cashback.
Absolute crap from them and there was no way to contest it.
Also it will usually track as a lower amount which doesn't really help things either.

Warning/info
I've just purchased the base £1045 Surface Book through Topcashback with 10.5% cashback. Just to warn everyone else, I just now discovered they'll only do cashback on the EX-VAT price - which is £870.83! So whereas I was expecting £105 cashback I will only get £87. I think this is a little sneaky as it didn't make this clear. The cashback tracked almost immediately after purchase, but it shows only £43.97. However, I was warned that "cashback will initially track lower and then will track higher once validated" - so it should increase later. BUT I'm now wondering whether I should just go through Quidco. Does Quidco include the full price with VAT? Anyone tried? Would really appreciate this info so I can quickly cancel my current order.

29 Oct 161#177
Quidco is pretty good, but it really depends on the company who's doing the selling, for instance Lastminute.com cashback tracks reliably, Staples and Travelodge rarely. But if it doesn't track then you raise a case within 45 days and they take it up with the supplier, of the cases I've raised Travelodge paid up every time, Staples, maybe 25% of the time.
I bought my surface from Curry's they've always tracked reliably and pay up reliable. I've not got a record of any tracking for Microsoft, so don't know how good they are.
I always treat cashback as a bonus, rather than rely on it, because with companies like Staples, they're clearly quite dishonest. I've stopped using Staples for my business because of their failure to pay up.
In reality failure to track is pretty much unforgivable, it's really simple to record transactions, so failure to do show shows poor website or back-end coding. If you want to make it more likely, use a browser in 'in-private' mode or clear all cookies before navigating to Quidco and then click on the Quido cashback link, it's not a good idea to add any third party codes as this is often prohibited unless supplied by Quidco.
For me 95% tracks and pays, which would have been 99.9% if it wasn't for Staples.

You will be fine with this, it runs similar to an GTX 860 which would deffo do medium GTA at 1080p ..probably high at 30 FPS, rocket league will have no issues as it's not a very demanding game. Though the resolution on this is 3000x2000 so you will need to drop the res down to 1080p when gaming. But your Photoshop will run a lot better, I have the SP4 and never once had an issue with photoshop, InDesign and Illustator... all of which run super fast. 16gb would give you a boost but only if you are the type of person (like me) that has about 50 Adobe files on the go at once. Either way it will blow your MBP out of the water in terms of performance, it's a big upgrade over a 4yo MBP.
Also remember you can stream you free Xbox One to your PC!

28 Oct 16#165
Ah you seem to be struggling with suggesting a lightweight alternative, or for that matter suggesting any alternative. I'm not interested in willy waving exercise over the 'latest and greatest' tech from Intel, I've got real work to do, and it needs the machine today, the weight aspect is probably the highest part of the equation and screen size, but I can't afford to compromise too much on other aspects. I've got a powerful laptop, but it's simply not light enough for what I need, I can afford to drop the processing performance a bit, but the Core M is too slow for what I need but my i7 laptop which is roughly equivalent to the surface pro4 i5, would be fine except the weight and battery life issues inherent with the i7.
Time will be the judge of things, but when it turns up (not today thanks to DPD incompetence) I'll see, I will have 3 different machines each running the same workload to compare (and weigh).

Thanks for replying.
Those brands don't shout reliable at me. I've had Dell/HP/Lenovo before all around £800 and builds were plastic cheap and had Dell return as soon as it arrived with faulty mobo for example.
1. Reliability - My MBP is still running super fast after 4 years but it's not retina and fan sounds really loud on high CPU/graphics usage.
2. CPU performance - top end i5 or low end i7 will do. Odd photoshop/video editing but nothing intense or 4k stuff
3. Of course 1080p or better screen as a upgrade to the MBP
4. I write a lot of documents, maybe the touch would be useful but again not really required
5. I have no budget, if I want I could buy the new 15" MBP but I don't like the way Apple is heading there and graphics card is just meh on that. Would like to play some games like rocket league in HD and maybe even GTA on Medium quality.
At the moment still considering on keeping the MBP until it dies if ever. i7-3720QM with 16gb ram since it's last model which lets you add ram/ssd yourself.

Yeah you need a lightweight over priced laptop that is already getting out of date and struggles with day to day tasks.
The only things i can think of are if you like Surface that much then its best waiting for a better version as this one is not it. Otherwise get a good proven laptop with everything ready and an ability to last a bit of time.
To others: Given that there have been laptop announcements lately have a look at the differences and use those as a target. The new USB port for example or ability to handle higher res video. Battery life is also improving as well as other convenience features.
robchester
28 Oct 16#157
also battery life seems to be about 4 or 5 hours which does limit the mobility of it if you're out and about a fair bit. Added to the fact that the battery doesn't look replaceable, I'm not sure if these will have a reasonable shelf life? my tablet has probably lost 50% of its battery ability over the 2 years I've had it.

Good post, maybe the Surface isn't for me. I don't need to walk around with it, I'm using it in the home and at work which is primarily at a desk. I don't like being confined to one though and the light weight and big screen is an attraction. Mine would be used for some fairly basic music production, cubase or Reaper (think Garage band level) and outside of that as a consumer device much like a tablet. What frustrates me about my Android 8 inch tablet which is heavily used is the fact I still need a Windows or Apple device to run certain software. I would prefer a touchscreen for ease of use especially when adjusting levels etc as its just quicker than mouse or trackpad.
I've actually got a couple of buyers for the Xbox too but the problems arise if the Surface needs to be returned for any reason as I'd need to keep the Xbox to return also. Can the Surface be used as Xbox display device through the display port or is it display out only?
mbuckhurst
28 Oct 16#155
I'm sure there are some esoteric uses for Thunderbolt 3, especially plugging in high graphics adaptors, for the majority of people this isn't going to be the case, which is probably why we're not seeing MS update the surface this time round, I suspect they're waiting on the next generation CPU and perhaps that's when we'll see Thunderbolt 3, by then I'll have used the surface for months doing my day to day work. My office is full of promising new architectures and kit that didn't deliver on the claims, or got made redundant almost as soon as it was released, that's why I only buy for today's need rather than any future possible usage.

I would probably have rather had a discount and keyboard rather than the Xbox, but it is a good offer. Heat given.
Regarding the numerous people suggesting that money is better off spent elsewhere, this is almost certainly true if you don't use the pen. Don't buy a Surface to watch videos on the commute home. Buy a Surface because you want to be able to handwrite legible comments real-time as you give a presentation, whilst being free to walk around as you do so. Nothing else I've tried compares for this. Or because a Surface Pro is more portable than a laptop and Cintiq tablet (and compares favourably on price). If you use the pen, and can afford to sit at a desk to type, the Surface Pro is excellent. If you need to type on your knee, or have to work in circumstances where there isn't room to engage the kickstand, the Surface Book is better.
If you need to use a stylus, but balk at the price of the Surface (and are patient), you ought to be able to pick up one of the tablet versions of the Thinkpad X220/X230 range on ebay for around the £200 mark. Yes, the laptop is old, and in the x220's case the processor does not support wireless display mirroring. However, the styli work well, and the processor still works plenty quick enough for most uses. In addition, I can confirm that the x220T works well with a GDC Beast eGPU adapter plugged into the expresscard slot (I have an GTX 750Ti I use to accelerate machine learning, and for the occasional game). Which brings me neatly to my final point... Great post, but I think that the likelihood of an eGPU adapter available quickly ( a usage case designed into the architecture of the kaby lake processors) for Thunderbird 3 makes the Surface 5 worth waiting for for some usage cases (I'm holding off an upgrade to a Surface 4 for that very reason).
Got a Surface Pro 4 for work. Can't understand all the fuss! And don't get me started on the Windows Store!

You'd have to define what makes this stand out to you? Better in computing terms is so subjective, it's difficult to make a suggestion. I personally look at what HP, Acer, Asus, Lenovo and Dell offer and that pretty much covers the entire mainstream supply, factors that matter to me taken into account I'll end up with 3 or 4 machines, at which point I delve into the reviews and make a decision from there.
For me the equation happened to place weight, power, size, battery life and quality of screen as the primary drivers, price was a secondary consideration, in that order, but you may have different opinions. This is why I ended up going for the surface pro 4; i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD variant.

That may be the case, but very few mainstream consumers, who amount for the bulk of sales when it comes to TV and technology in general, will actually care about 4K. Let alone the difference between lower bitrate HDR 4K streams and high bitrate BDs.
At the end of the day, the idiots who walk into currys and buy the shiniest TV they can see/afford are the ones who dictate where tech goes in the future. And that future is streaming garbage on Netflix. 4K Bluray is there for the niche market that wants the very best sadly.
Side point, always funny seeing the irony of the xbots and even Microsoft themselves flaunting the 4K bluray capabilities after they tried so hard to get away from the whole "all in one media box" thing that killed Microsoft in the first place when it comes to this gens console "war".
The PS4 pro doesn't have it simply to keep costs down. They have huge momentum still for sales, regardless of Microsoft doing well with the One S. why cut profit margins when clearly people want a games console for games? Makes literally no sense. If demand for 4K bluray comes, they'll add it to a revised model. Simples.

You seem to forget the main crux of my statement, it's all about need to do things, I need a light weight powerful tablet/laptop, the surface is exactly what I require, yes the chips are all a bit old, yes it's not running the latest hardware, but the thing is it comes with exactly what I NEED. I don't own anything that can benefit from Thunderbolt 3 the fastest peripheral I use is a MyMemory red 256GB chip, which although fast for the money doesn't stretch USB3, I don't run software that it's worth waiting 6 months for the 10% performance boost that the next processor generation provides.
I actually need a machine today (or tomorrow as that's when it arrives) that's light, largish high resolution screen, capable OS that can run SQL, Visual Studio, Photoshop and a multitude of other software packages. This offer happened to arrive at the perfect time for me and this is by far the nearest to perfection for my requirements, it's just a bonus that I get it with an Xbox (which is either Christmas sorted or £200 off the surface), by the time I take into account Quidco, cashback and the way my business finances work, the surface costs in real terms £400, which isn't bad for an extremely capable machine that fits in with what I need.
As with any PC purchase, there's always something better coming, and whatever you purchase today will be a compromise, only the buyer will no whether it's worth it and yes it might be an expensive mistake, but that's true no matter what you buy.
I challenge you to find a Windows 10 tablet with similar screen, similar battery life, similar processing power and similar weight all for a lower overall price, even if you think the Xbox is a dud, it should still sell for £200 and therefore you should really take this into account when looking at the overall cost.

Both consoles have been out for 3 years, Xbox one has only outsold the ps4 for 3-4 months, Sony have sold over double the amount of Ps4 consoles compared to Xbox ones. Microsoft will claw it back next Christmas with the release of scorpio tho. Cannot remember the last time I brought a blu ray, streaming and downloads are the future, not owning a physical disc.

I will tell you what is not old. Someone who defends old, under supported, niche and under powered hardware. The i5 and i7 in the non Notebook Surfaces are under powered compared to laptop variants.
Other manufacturers have made better newer devices and Intel are also pushing Thunderbolt massively which will be awesome for portable hardware giving them direct to PCI express connections. It will help prolong the life of hardware and add additional options for people who like laptops but want desktop performance and productivity at times.
If you want to regret an expensive purchase fine by all means buy the surface. Nevermind the Xbone which itself is struggling as a console platform.

Yeah, your mistaken... it's 0.8kg in weight.
TBH weight is never really an issue, it just feels very premium and still amazes me how powerful it is considering it's size. 4 years ago you would have needed a full sized PC case for the level of performance you get from it.
Like I said earlier, as an owner of one I will never go back to a traditional laptop or tablet. This blows them both out of the water and for me has reduced the need to have 2 devices into just needing 1.

1.75kg though....(unless I'm mistaken). Which makes it a poor tablet.
So there's no protection for the screen offered in the £971 deal? I think I looked at Surface Pro 4 a couple of months back and found that they were almost the same price as a Surface book once you added the keyboard and necessary peripherals. You could probably sell the Xbox bundle for £200. I was looking at the Lenovo Yoga 510 at £599 with i5 and 128gb but can't make my mind up if a flippable laptop actually makes for a tablet replacement or whether it's just too big and cumbersome.

It will work. Games will work. But Blu Rays and DVDs will be region locked (not all, depends on distributor/publisher but you're likely to come accross some that are). Cheers as a freelancing IT consultant - I think a surface Pro raises no eyebrows to the tax man - it's a standard purchase. An xbox one s, however is very questionable as something required for business use. That's why I ask. And the intention would be to keep both. I have half an eye on a new xbox to upgrade my xbox 360, and half an eye on a new iPad or Surface Pro. A big win if I can cleanly put through the business.
mbuckhurst
26 Oct 16#92
Strictly speaking it wouldn't matter whether it was free or not, the tax man would expect the value to be taken into account. I guess the trick would be to buy it personally then transfer it into your business at the value, which of course happens to be the purchase price, but you'd still potentially run the risk of the tax man having issues.
Certainly if you bought it for the business and then sold it, you'd certainly have to take account of the income, but if it didn't sell, perhaps because you list it on ebay as used (you had to test it after all) at too high a price, you could eventually write the value down.

26 Oct 1651#89

This really isnt a bargain at all. Its not a good enough device spec wise. Beware the i5 i7 branding and look more long term. The fact it is £900+ makes it a dumb purchase. There are much better laptops and tablets you can buy separately. This doesnt do well at either function.
Also Kaby Lake is out soon. Keep an eye out for announcements by Dell, HP, Lenovo etc. Laptop connectivity is changing with Thunderbolt 3 etc.

Yeah, considering the SP5 was not announced this is a total bargain.
I got mine last November and despite the high price point it is worth every penny. It truly is a sublime piece of kit, it’s slim, really good performance, the screen is crystal clear, the pen just works and the keyboard cover is surprisingly good… will never go back to a traditional laptop.
Only downsides are the short battery life (I get around 3-6 hours’ general use) and no integrated graphics. Hoping the SP5 would address this today but that never happened.
So would be all over this if I didn’t have one already… deffo hot!

Weren't there rumours they won't be refreshing the line until next year due to intel roadmap? There hasn't been any leaks / teases either...
Opening post
For a limited time, grab yourself a free Xbox One S 500GB with FIFA17 when you purchase any qualifying Microsoft Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book.
This offer seems to be available direct from Microsoft Store also.

It probably helps if I add that the Surface Pro doesn't come with a keyboard/dock and the Surface Book does. It also has a battery and a gpu built into the dock which is why it is quite a bit more expensive.
Thanx for that. :-)
Surface = more of a tablet
Surface Book = more of a laptop.
How can the Surface Book be costlier than the Surface Book Pro? (and by the same Company too?), or ..... thanx.
So your's at £1150, mean's you paid MORE than the OP's £971.10 then?, or ..... :-(
Lol.

Interested to hear your comparison
Have to try get it to Ireland now. With the current rate / no similar offers here it's so much more expensive. My sister is taking delivery and will bring back for me.
As Argos still have 971 for bundle SP4 and xBox.
I have never done it before so could someone explain how it works if I haven't bought the item yet?
They failed to pay out hundreds of pounds of cashback via TCB last year even though I went through all the correct processes.
TCB were trying to be helpful when I submitted a claim but it took months to try and get a response, then they turned around and said that Microsoft had declined the cashback.
Absolute crap from them and there was no way to contest it.
Also it will usually track as a lower amount which doesn't really help things either.
Quidco do it on exVat too.
For me 95% tracks and pays, which would have been 99.9% if it wasn't for Staples.

thanks
Its a fantastic device apart from the trackpad! Its bit crap
Also remember you can stream you free Xbox One to your PC!

Time will be the judge of things, but when it turns up (not today thanks to DPD incompetence) I'll see, I will have 3 different machines each running the same workload to compare (and weigh).

EdITEd: Found it. Its the second offer of 2 offers . First one is the Mc Affee.
I've actually got a couple of buyers for the Xbox too but the problems arise if the Surface needs to be returned for any reason as I'd need to keep the Xbox to return also. Can the Surface be used as Xbox display device through the display port or is it display out only?
mike

For me the equation happened to place weight, power, size, battery life and quality of screen as the primary drivers, price was a secondary consideration, in that order, but you may have different opinions. This is why I ended up going for the surface pro 4; i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD variant.

After TCB £157 cash back/selling Xbox and VAT reclaim its about £1000
At the end of the day, the idiots who walk into currys and buy the shiniest TV they can see/afford are the ones who dictate where tech goes in the future.
Simples.
I challenge you to find a Windows 10 tablet with similar screen, similar battery life, similar processing power and similar weight all for a lower overall price, even if you think the Xbox is a dud, it should still sell for £200 and therefore you should really take this into account when looking at the overall cost.
mike
I thought you meant the Surface was too cumbersome... My fault for skip reading
http://www.geekwire.com/2016/microsoft-surface-business-climbs-topping-1-3b-as-lumia-sales-plummet/
If its marked up as £0 for the XB-One then you're "safe", but if its marked at a discount price then no you couldnt put it through your accounts.
""I was looking at the Lenovo Yoga 510 at £599 with i5 and 128gb but can't make my mind up if a flippable laptop actually makes for a tablet replacement or whether it's just too big and cumbersome"
I replied;
"Too big and cumbersome"
And you then said it weighed 0.8kg
I'm already sold on the Surface concept anyway. But always looking out for reasonably priced alternatives.
However, I logged into topcashback and clicked through the 157 link, went to surface pro 4, selected '5/256gb and they WANT to give me a free xbox so I'd say you'd be alright.
For the record I don't think a Lenovo laptop will blow anything out of the water.
More than happy to be shown the spec sheet that says it is 0.8kg (because a laptop of that price/weight/performance would make a nice upgrade from my Surface 3!)
Good one.

Worth a shot.
Might as well wait till Black Friday.
It's great to see Microsoft cater to creatives, and bring something new and interesting to the table.
It would only matter if you were 'disposing' of the xbox one way or another. Just because the xbox might be attached to a tv in your lounge, it is still in the possession of the business ....
(from another IT contractor who bought his first xbox with Kinect on the business due to 'testing Kinect for video conferencing purposes'...)
Edit - actually it is all detailed so looks like the new model.
Also student beans are doing 10% at the min off Microsoft surface products if your a student if not I've got a code if anyone wants it
Certainly if you bought it for the business and then sold it, you'd certainly have to take account of the income, but if it didn't sell, perhaps because you list it on ebay as used (you had to test it after all) at too high a price, you could eventually write the value down.
mike

seems like alot of sheeple about
Also Kaby Lake is out soon. Keep an eye out for announcements by Dell, HP, Lenovo etc. Laptop connectivity is changing with Thunderbolt 3 etc.
Just watched the reveal of the awesome surface studio, I love Microsoft hardware!
The Surface Pro is a bit more resonably priced and easier to stomach.
Well I have a Surface Book i5 with the dock and it is one PITA, dropping USB devices all the time (even ones with their own power like USB SATA docking stations), no sound from external monitor, horrible scaling when going from external monitor to the SB itself... the list goes on.
Look out for them .....
YEP!, I'm with alllllll you lot above on that one?. :-(
And/or if your able to hold out for a wee bit, etc?, then ..... (that's what Black Friday, and/or Cyber Monday is allllllll about/alllllll for in the first place, etc, etc, etc, right?), lol. :-)
actually a great deal and pretty temptating....:innocent:
New Surface Book i7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1OsmndtIrY
No Mention of a Surface Pro 5?
The Studio looks nice!! Need some reviews to see if worth paying for them.
Like most say these are niche products really. They target a certain market but are trying to be mass appeal. ATM the price is just too high for that IMHO.
They do seem to have a 'cool' factor though. Oh and they come with a headphone jack and USB #Bonus
... and then you see they want £109 for a keyboard.
Guessing you must have used the M3 version which I can't comment on but think that was discontinued.
Thanks
mike
thing is how easy is selling a surface Pro for £871 (not to mention eBay fees)
At least in Surface and surface book models.
In any case, it would be a silly move to buy before the news comes later today - the prices are not going to suddenly go up the instant a new model ISNT announced!
