I have this drive. Mine is quite noisy when the arm is moving across the platter. Not sure if that's inherent with this model. Would be good to know so I can RMA if not.

All drives are noisy to a degree...this isn't any exception.
I should have it on Monday and I will report how noisy it is compared to my standalone drives in HDD docks.

I'm always wary of these external drives, especially at 7200rpm.
I just bought a WD Blue 6tb internal drive as a storage option, it's cool, quiet, and for 5400rpm is very quick.
Whilst moving stuff from my external Seagate drive I noticed some files just wouldn't move, so I opened HD tune, and apparently the temperature had hit 60 degrees, reporting failures and suggesting I should replace the drive.
I managed to move everything across in the end and by all means it still actually works, but the temperature from idle goes from 27 degrees to about 56 degrees within the space of 30 minutes.
... Then again it's Seagate.

Similar to my 5TB Samsung D3 station (Seagate again but I have never had a problem with them touch wood) I got for £92 from Groupon + £8 TCB, It got to 50c when testing it and transferring stuff (which seemed to be the max so not too bad), so I put a desk fan on it all the time (just cooling exterior case) and it went down to 38c. Apparently it's best to keep them under 40c. It's still showing as "perfect" under HD Sentinel.

These are good drives in inadequate enclosures. Here are the comments I posted more than a year ago when they were under £100 at Amazon:
"A few words of caution for anyone planning to keep these in the original enclosures. These drives run extremely hot, the ventilation is totally inadequate. Drive was idling at about 50C, rising to 55C and higher in use, SMART shows that it reached a peak of 62C. The maximum specified operating temperature for the drive is 55C, so it looks like a poor design decision to put this drive in this enclosure. Removing from the enclosure and running the drive naked on the desk made little difference. I now have the drive in a 4-bay enclosure and it is running sweet, 34C idle, and no more than 38C under 100% load.
I have just looked at a few specs for comparison:
TOSHIBA MD04ACA500 6.0W Idle, 11.3W Under Load, Operating Temp 5-55C
WD Red 6TB 3.3W Idle, 4.5W Under Load, Operating Temp 0-70C
WD Green 6TB 3.4W Idle, 5.3W Under Load, Operating Temp 0-65C
Seagate 5TB 7.0W Idle, 9.0W Under Load, Operating Temp 0-60C
Not really a fair comparison as the Toshiba is a full fat 7200rpm drive, but it clearly shows the relatively high power consumption.
If I was intending to use as supplied, then I would be returning, however I was always going to rehouse the disks, so I am more than happy."

I have two of these - it is a noisy drive for sure so if you're after something quiet this isn't it. These enclosures are very difficult to open without damaging the enclosure (it can be done I managed it with the right tools) but it's a very good deal for a lot of space.

I found these easy to open, start at the vented side and use a couple of old credit cards or pieces of hard plastic. I've opened several of these and can do it without breaking any clips or leaving any marks.
I last opened one a few months ago and it had a MD04ACA500 inside, it's quite loud.

OK, so I run the drive for more than 1 hour of constant data tranfer and temps got up to 48 C, which is fine.
Transfer speeds were what one is to expect of USB 3.0, i.e anywhere between 83 Mb/s and 147 MB/s (sustained).
Fairly quiet, no louder than any of my other drives.
