This deal is based on 2 adults flying out to Venice Marco Polo from Bristol on 5th November returning 8th November.

There are similar flight prices from East Midlands.

You will be staying in the 3 star Nuova Mestre which is located a 10 minute train journey outside the heart of Venice. The hotel has good reviews on TripAdvisor and includes free breakfast.

Venice is a beautiful city all year round, I've been every season of the year and even winter time is a lovely time to visit, especially if you don't want the crowds of people.

I have stayed in Mestre twice and it is so easy to get to the heart of Venice. The train station has trains every 10 minutes or so running to Venice and it only takes 10 minutes max. If you'd prefer to stay on the island of Venice itself the price for these dates are fairly high so I'd suggest Mestre being the best option.

This deal only includes hand luggage however you're entitled to a 10kg cabin bag and a personal hand bag. If you pack wisely you shouldn't have any trouble doing this trip. If you wanted to check luggage in it'll cost £30 extra each.

Price breakdown

Flights booked with Ryanair - £39.96

Hotel booked with Elvoline - £99.99

Total price for 2 people - £139.95

Total price each - £69.98

Took the Mrs to Venice a couple of months ago and it was great! If you are going, Google 'water fountains', 'Venice service charge' and 'Constitution Bridge'. The bridge is featured on a show called Incredible Engineering Blunders Fixed. Actually, not fixed in this case.

When we came out of the arrivals gate at the airport, just to the left was a window that dealt with public transport. We bought return bus tickets to get to the city and back to the airport, 15 euros each, and we also bought 72 hour passes which meant we could jump on any water bus in Venice and take the train in and out of Mestre. You can also take the water bus to the other islands like Murano and Burano. We were very happy staying at the Hotel Della Rose in Mestre. A grocery store and the train was just a 5 minute walk. The train took 12 minutes to arrive in Venice. The bus from Venice to the airport only took about 20 minutes.
Venice is great for a 2-3 day break away.

I'd should also add that people on JSA can have savings up to a certain amount, so to say anyone on unemployment benefits shouldn't be taking holidays is, as I initially stated, ridiculous.
77andyb
29 Oct 16 #36
So you don't think people claiming unemployment benefits sometimes lower the quality of their food and clothing, scrimp and save, in order to be able to afford a short break? That's a very short-sighted view of the situation. A short break could help improve the state of mind of somebody struggling to find a job, thereby increasing their chances of finding a job. I won't bore you with the statistics of how little real benefit fraud actually goes on, but I see you really buy into the tabloid mentality, and probably feel more animosity towards a very small minority of people who may be committing benefit fraud than you do towards huge corporations that do their utmost to avoid taxes while simultaneously paying their employees cack wages. As for Syrian refugees, frankly I don't give a fig if a few 'overage' ones take asylum here. If you were in their situation and had the opportunity to get out of that hell hole, you'd probably try it on. France and Italy take twice as many asylum seekers than the UK, and Germany takes 6 times as many. Stop believing the bull you hear from your mates in the pub, or read in the Sun or Daily Mail.

Hello, everyone.

This discussion about validating tickets is a weird one, to me.

Many European countries have this system. I guess we may think we're a little spoilt in the UK with extensive Oyster coverage, where you have to touch in when you start a journey and touch out when your journey ends. That's 2 swipings, no?

In cities which use validation systems, you (generally) only have to validate the ticket once, at the start of your journey, and that's it - usually. So, one less action than Oyster. Also, countries which require you to validate your ticket are no different to, say, London where, if you don't have a valid ticket or Oyster card to travel, you'll pay a penalty. This is no different to anywhere I've ever been which doesn't use Oyster.

If you do the usual type of traveller research before you go away, you'll find out about this and should be aware of all the procedures before you arrive. It really is no big deal. And, honestly, do you really think transport companies abroad are out to get tourists/travellers by being sneaky about things like this? No, me neither.

Happy holidays.

The problem is that People unused to this system although they may have bought a ticket and are able to present this to an Inspector,if it isn't validated(by putting it through the validation machine before boarding the train or bus),then it is not a "validated" ticket and therefore the Inspector will demand an on the spot fine. This is part of his job.How many times do you think he must hear the excuse,"Sorry I didn't know",or "I forgot to validate it",or "I didn't have time to validate it because I didn't want to miss my train".

So people 'on the dole' shouldn't be allowed to have cheap holidays? Ludicrous statement.
spenspuma to 77andyb
29 Oct 16 1 #29
If youre claiming unemployment benefits from the state then no, you technically should only have enough money each week for food and rent. This is the biggest problem with the dole system...lazy people are using it as a way of life. Wanting the same things as those who go to work, but without lifting a finger to earn it.

A bit like the Syrian 30 year old 'children' we have accepted in recently....absolutely zero chance of ever putting into the system...simply take take take as they are unemployable.

Very useful post for those looking to visit Venice.

Went last October and weather was incredible. Wife and I stayed in padua which was a beautiful city in its own right and visited sights such as Scrovengi 's chapel which is well worth visiting. We stayed in a b&b not far from the station for Eur80 a night but was really stunning. The train to Venice (the RV ones) took 30 mins and only cost a couple of euros. We loved it!

We couldn't for the life of us find the machine to validate our train tickets from Venice to Trieste, no machines on the platform, realised too late it was probably somewhere near the entrance to the platform area. Luckily the ticket inspector was sympathetic, and 'validated' our tickets by writing stuff on them. So be warned, the ticket validating machines aren't on every platform of the station ( which I'd have thought would be the easy, sensible thing to do), once you've bought your tickets find a validation machine ASAP!

I actually think the validation aspect of rail/bus ticketing makes perfect sense. It seems to me it would be a good way of minimising fare evasion.

I agree it's not complex but it is dated and is easy to get caught out.
The main difference here being that you can't (and shouldn't) be able get on to most transport without scanning - removing the chance of a fine for something you were not told
Off topic from the deal really so i'll leave it there...

Been to a few countries with similar systems. Handy that you can buy so many tickets in advance and use them when you need them.
Bit outdated i guess with contactless smartcards having been around about 20 years in other places.

Tbh I'd pay the extra to stay in Venice. Was good not seeing traffic for 3 days.

Can vouch for this, nearly happened to us in Rome but i happened to look at the ticket just in time. Such a backwards system that seems set up specifically to catch out tourists.

Hi
To validate your ticket you must go to the small yellow box (machine) and get the ticket stamped before boarding the train. The machines are located on entrance to the platform's.

2 euros 55 cents just got back 2 weeks ago be warned though that when you purchase your ticket you must validate it.

the need to validate the ticket is only shown on the small print on the rear of the ticket and come on who reads the back of their ticket?!

so many tourists were being fined 30 euros each myself included as the ticket inspectors were merciless
