Does £149 for a USED Wii U still count as a good deal in 2016? Especially with NX on the horizon, and the PS4/XBox1 costing about the same...?

The prices did drop really low in 2014, but no one bought it anyway. May as well make as much money as possible & increase the price if lowering the price makes no difference to sales.

The game prices are still very high, too. Only the 'Select' games are reasonably priced.
Dont forget that you'll also probably want to buy an SD card for it, too. 32GB aint nothing.
That said, if you do want a Wii U, this is sadly a pretty good deal. Used prices are kinda ridiculous at the moment as well.
I've largely given up on Nintendo because I think their products are consistently low value compared to the competition.

I own all 3, and personally I think there are more quality games on the wii u than either of the other 2.
And before anyone says 'but they're all old ideas', 'remakes', etc etc, the top selling games on the other 2 are normally sequels, latest installments etc, such as fifa, cod et al.
There may not be as vast a library on wii u, but if you want quality over quantity, I think £150 is a steal for the enjoyment you'll get.

Depends how you look at it, people are happy to pay £50 for an old NES with 30 games built in with no option for more. An Xbox one S doesn't have Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Splatoon etc to name a few. So for £149.99 it's still quite good.

I bought a Wii U from release and don't regret it. It's a great little console with some fantastic games, and I'll never get round to finishing all the games I have.
The gamepad is great for offscreen play when the wife's watching some boring reality TV. It's not the most comfortable controller but nowhere near as bad as some people make out.
Shame it didn't take off and is being retired early. Just hope they keep online running so that I can continue playing online. You can't beat Wiimote controls for Call of Duty either, will be difficult to go back to Dual Analogue.

This is a ridiculous comment. They have Wii U pro controllers for actual gaming; which in my opinion is one of the best controllers out there. The main offscreen play is the best part when you have more than 1 child as they can still play while the TV is used for another purpose. The Wii U has always been the most used console in my house since we've had it.

They send European imported games instead of UK (with no mention in product description), this means no trade in. I've also had games from them in the past which were new but the case has been opened and disk obviously used. When trying to contact them they don't get back to you until you send multiple emails, messages through the site and even Facebook messages. They just hope you'll get fed up and leave them alone.

My point had nothing to do with the quality of the 8-10 good games on the Wii U you can't get on other consoles. My point is that £150 for a USED Wii U at this stage is ridiculous. The fact that Nintendo haven't implemented any price reduction for years on these is a slap in the face for their fans really. People are paying £199.99 for an Xbox One S + a brand new £40 value game, and nintendo are still asking for the same money for a Wii U with a game - Mental.
I didn't actually vote cold on this deal because fair play if this is actually the cheapest you can get one, then it should be voted up on this site. But I think it's fair to criticise Nintendo for their pricing on these.

Again my point is that it's worth what people will pay for it. People will pay £149.99 for the pleasure of playing the said games as they can't be played on any other console (PS4/XBOX ONE). The price for anything is measured on what someone will pay for it not how it compares to another item. Nintendo know they offer nostalgia for many gamers who will happily pay more for the privilege. Xbox and Playstation offer nothing other than maybe Final Fantasy 7 as a nostalgia for me. I personally have just bought the Xbox One S mainly as I needed a new Blu ray/4k player which would cost close to the cost of the console alone. If I was not in need of this I would definitely not of bought it. However if I didn't have a Wii U already I would almost certainly buy one for this price as for me is a bargain for what the console is. This is ultimately a handheld console, a family console, an active console (Wiimote games), Nostalgia console all in one and has enough great games to keep your average family happy for years. If you're a Hardcore gamer then obviously this will not be for you.

Gold Feet
25 Sep 16#41
Isn't it economies of scale? MS make more units so the costs come down. They also sell enough software so they can forfeit any profit on the console. They also have plenty of other income to support a console business and regularly throw money down the drain.
The Wii U initially cost between $180 - $220 to manufacture and this is Nintendo's main product.
Apple mark their goods up 40%, yet nobody moans.
bernardsfingers
25 Sep 161#42
I'd say there are more than 10 Wii U games that you can't play on the PS4 or Xbox One that are worth buying a Wii U to play (i.e. Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Lego City Undercover, Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros. U & New Super Luigi U, Pikmin 3, Splatoon, Star Fox Zero, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, The Wonderful 101, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi's Woolly World plus Zelda when it comes out). Obviously, not everyone will like all of these but there is definitely a decent selection of games you can't play elsewhere, plus there's plenty of other games worth playing. I don't think that £150 is the standard price for a used console, as if you want a 2nd hand Wii U you can find a boxed one on gumtree for £150 or less with games. My point being that this price isn't actually representative of what they sell for. The Xbox One & the Wii U are quite different machines with very different games so it seems silly to say 'but you can pay the same money for this other console which can't play Mario Kart or Super Mario Bros or Zelda but plays completely different games' - if you were paying simply for the level of technology included then everyone would buy the PS4 (or whatever the most powerful console is on sale at the moment) but more powerful technology is irrelevant if it doesn't play the games you want. The value of the Wii U isn't in comparison to the other current gen consoles - although this is obviously less true for the PS4 and Xbox since the games you can play on both are pretty much the same - it's in the games you can play & the Wii U games are generally pretty good (but only really if you like Nintendo games). I think the problem is the Wii U has failed so badly that Nintendo have completely given up on trying to sell it & are happy just shifting the remaining stock at the same price until the NX releases.

Have you ever thought that maybe, since you've bought every console they've made for 20 years, you're no longer their target audience and the Wii U wasn't designed to please you? It's aimed at a family audience so encourages playing games together. The fact you have played many Nintendo consoles doesn't make your opinion any more valid than someone who has only ever played a Wii U. The Wii U suits some people & not others.
As far as the gamepad is concerned, it's required for some games but these games are very few - I can only think of Nintendo Land and ZombiU off the top of my head, but the gamepad is integral to these anyway. The requirement to use the gamepad to change system settings is not likely to affect you very often unless you love modifying system settings in your free time. The fact Nintendo didn't make the most of the controller is a valid criticism but the off-TV play function is an excellent idea which many people enjoy using.

Once again, various people not interested in Wii U come to a deal to criticise and complain. I have no interest in a PS4 or Xbox but feel no desire to go on those deals and criticise. I'm sure PS4 Xbox are great consoles.
If you want a Wii U enough, you'll buy one at the current price, if you don't want one fine, just move along.
A serious question here to you PS4 and Xbox owners, do Wii U owners make criticising comments on PS4 and Xbox deals? I wouldn't know as I don't read them.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the question is why do you feel so strongly about criticising a deal that you are not interested in. I don't even bother to read deal comments for a product that doesn't interest me, I have better things to do with my time. I'm not having a go, just really don't understand it.

Well if you are right and they do drop below £70, I'll pick up a 2nd one for the kids bedroom. Are there many stores actually selling new Wii Us now? It could become quite a rare product in time to come just like some of the games. I suspect Nintendo reduced their manufacturing output on them quite some time ago. I doubt there's many retailers with tons of stock to offload but maybe I'm wrong.
Spasho
25 Sep 161#61
That logic is flawed. NX will actually be a new gaming system and cost between £250-300 whereas the Wii U it's on life-support with Paper Mario: Colour Splash and Zelda:BotW coming and that's about it, as far as Nintendo exclusives.
If I didn't already own a Wii U I'd wait for the NX to be released and then get one or get the NX.

As a family man I only have so much free time to play videogames. I have 32 boxed games and at least as many downloads. And I don't have any duds as I always read reviews or try demos if available. And of course many of them such as Mario Kart, and Call of Duty can be played over and over with no end as such.

The Wii U has the gamepad - the screen can be damaged & it has an internal battery - so replacing the gamepad (or just the battery) will become more difficult in the future once manufacture has ceased & the Wii U is no longer on sale - so a fully working Wii U could potentially become rare in the future (depending how long you are willing to wait). Also, since it sold so poorly, there will be far fewer 2nd hand Wii U's around than Wii's which are worth very little since everyone has one (sitting in the same cupboard it's been in unused for the last 5 years).

Apple does get slack from people. Though it partly gets overlooked since it's viewed as a premium product. Nintendo on the other hand use cheap plastic. Both the hardware and the materials are cheap so some people can't justify spending similar prices as the competition for an inferior (hardware wise) product. Personally I've half-hoped to see this become cheaper for a while not wanting to pay the amount they've asked, but now I'm more interested in looking at the NX and see if I find it worth it. At least it'll be a new product more likely to be worth the price tag.

If there is no cheaper alternative it doesn't logically follow that this has to be a hot deal. It may be that it is a rip-off everywhere.

Bought ours last Christmas and it has been the most used console in the house, such good fun and well worth £150!

I can't really understand how people are comparing this to the Xbox One price considering this comes with a fresh catalogue of games that you cant get on other consoles. Heat from me.

Nintendo order parts in advance and in bulk.
There are plenty of cheap Chinese tablet game devices and knock off motion stuff. Some of them, Doogee, became quite good, but Im guessing the moaners here want to play Nintendo IP for crappy knock-off console prices?

But I gave the auction prices as an example. This deal is around the used market price.

Not really . i want old hardware for old hardware prices , if they actualy reduced the price of the console to nearer manufacturing cost (now) then more people would buy it and it would have sold a lot better. then i will pay the prices for the nintendo ip which arent cheap themselves and usualy still cost rrp 5 years in ( which i am not complaining about as there are about 5 games i would like to play)

I've voted hot based on the hours and hours that mine has been used. To be clear...do I think those endless hours of great entertainment are worth £150?
Yes I do.
How long it's been out it pretty irrelevant.

Nintendo stuff holds its value. Look at the 3DS games... Mario Kart still sells close to £20 on eBay.

how the dickens is this a hot deal? i bought a 2nd hand wii u with 8 games and accessories a year ago for £160....sold the games and accessories (other than MK)....ended up with a wii U and mk for £20!...still got bored with it and sold it on....

The Wii U is "underdiscovered" as a consumer entertainment item imo. We've had one for two years more or less, and people are only just taking the handset out of the lounge when somebody else budges them off the TV.
I think it has a fantastic future ahead of it, and not only as an enthusiast machine.

Its not a ridiculous comment. I cant stand the gamepad so I bought the Pro controller(had the wii u 2 months and bought a load of games). Fantastic controller but I am getting so frustrated that of the games I have I often need to revert back to the gamepad.
Examples
Super mario 3D land(Some levels require the gamepad!) and you cant play them without. The even more annoying thing is these levels would work just fine without the gamepad!
Splatoon cant be played without the gamepad
Super Mario maker - Sometimes I just want to play some levels and not make any and I need to use the gamepad to get through the menus
NETFLIX - I need the gamepad! aaaargh. Then when im watching a movie in the dark I have a second screen playing the movie. This light is distracting, I have to put the gamepad facedown
I have a PS4 and love the fact I can push a button the controller and select a game. No messing about. With the wii u Im constantly frustrated searching for both controllers trying to start up a game and then I realise the gamepads out of charge...you get the picture. Dont get me wrong there are some fantastic games and I completely understand when people say they have had great use out of it but is this console worth £150, NOT A CHANCE. If you have waited this long, keep waiting.

Nintendo aren't the ones setting this price. Retailers are setting this price because they know that marking it further downwards doesn't result in enough people buying to make up for the shortfall in profits.

26 Sep 161#109
You're 100% wrong and just making up some points off the top of your head that are pure assumptions and not even based on anything resembling a fact. Nintendo sets the price it sells to retailers and sets the RRP. The retailer can then choose whatever price they actually want. Generally, unless they are running a short-term promo (like Tesco did this week with the xbox one S) the retailers won't lower the price they sell the console at until the manufacturer lowers the price they sell to retailers.
The non-New versions are getting harder to find at retail though
jsty3105
26 Sep 16#111
We're both correct. And you are also correct about the RRP. However, what I'm getting at is the big sale from a few years ago showed both Nintendo and retailers that even if you priced it at £99, you won't move enough units to make up for the profit shortfall (and there's no way Nintendo would charge retailers such low prices for new stock because they won't want to report an operating loss). So, they likely calculated it was better to keep things as they are. Not the best scenario of course but seems like the least worst one.

Fair enough, I hate getting into too much of a back and forth online so will leave this thread here. I just think that the negativity in this thread is summed up by people feeling like this should be cheaper by now. There has essentially been no price decrease for three years which just doesn't add up to most people. That combined with a general feeling that they could have minimised how bad of a failure the Wii U has been by realising it earlier and selling it cheaper. May have resulted in a slightly longer lifespan for the console and a few more releases for it. Knock on effect is with less copies of games out there it's always a high cost of entry to a late-comer to stock up on old games for this console.
I love nintendo games but they make so many dumb decisions (it's a testament to how good their games are that they are still successful in the grand scheme of things). I got rid of my Wii U because of a lack of games coming out and the absolutely terrible online platform.

It could be due to the fact that they're all consoles. It's a bit odd to say that we can't compare them because there's differences. Of course there's differences, that's why they're separate products being compared. Personally I don't understand people defending it keeping it's price. Practically everything else, especially in the electronics world falls in price in time. Of the product you're supporting is as awesome as people suggest, don't you want to share that with others that want something more affordable. There's not really much incentive for me to swap from my PC which is the biggest platform not as limited on what content can be designed for it.
If it was £150 New I'd say it'd be a deal. Especially when people are holding out for the NX. Something people have done since late last year.

I'm gonna get Paper Mario: Colour Splash if only to get out my Wii U and use it again. Also read that the game is fun so not as bad as Nintendo's showing it to be.

True. The original wii had price cuts and sold by the bucket load. I hope nintendo fire their chief sales exec, maybe he was hired from blackberry? Imagine if MS sold the original xbox one at its launch price of £400 still!

thanks but its the new 3ds xl model i'm after, and as i have credit to uses up with another retailer im screwed, theres no way though im paying over £180 for a handheld without any games thats probably going to be out the door by next spring after Yoshi and pikmin drop.
I may as well struggle on a wait for this nx reveal lol now i have xbox back again i have to finish tomb raider, gears 4, halo 5 and dead rising 4 so hopefully that should numb the pain a bit lol

got excited when the alert popped up, the saw the words "used" and "Grainger games". eww.
It really does, hence why I just sold my Wii U after only 4 months despite always liking Nintendo games.could never get used to that huge, useless tablet controller with annoying, distracting screen in front of me,instead of a real straighforward comfortable, standard controller.
Still a fantastic console with many decent games, just needs to be at the £100 mark.
As I said, it's at your own risk but I would avoid this lot, big time.
I shouldn't have bothered with my ISA or p2p lending, should have bought up all the £99 Wii u from tesco a couple of years ago instead
Gaming wise can't fault it Nintendo land, captain toad stool and mazza kart are our favourites.
Really wish Nintendo will start bringing GBA to 3DS :disappointed:
The Wii U initially cost between $180 - $220 to manufacture and this is Nintendo's main product.
Apple mark their goods up 40%, yet nobody moans.
The Wii U right now shouldn't even cost higher than £100.
More modern games? You mean shooty games?
just because wii u was the most used console in your household doesn't make it a flawless product.
for the record i've owned every single nintendo console in the past 20 years so I know what I'm talking about.
if wii u and it's tablet controller was that great then tell me why it's nintendo's worst selling home console of all time and a huge failure?
obviously I know I can use the Pro controller with SELECTED titles, and that's the issue,it's mandatory for some titles and definitely mandatory for system tasks.you cannot get rid of it.
anyways you like it,good for you but I and the majority found it a failed concept, poorly executed idea focused on gimmick.again some games are great, the console and that stupid tablet pad are not.
How about Nintendo throw in some food stamps and a free bus pass?
If this comment isn't ridiculous then I'm not sure what is. Everything you say after that is meaningless.
are between £120 (no box) and £165 all boxed mint.
Only months away from the NX being released so I'd skip this. Even moreso that it's used (it's Grainger Games so obviously it would be).
If I didn't already own a Wii U I'd wait for the NX to be released and then get one or get the NX.
As a family man I only have so much free time to play videogames. I have 32 boxed games and at least as many downloads. And I don't have any duds as I always read reviews or try demos if available. Not to mention other decent ones I might pick up at some point. So far I've finished about 8 of them. And of course many of them such as Mario Kart, and Call of Duty can be played over and over with no end as such.
I have a Wii U. It has some great games. But alas, and as you've already stated, the PS4 and XBox One offer better ROI.
March 2017 will also be a good time...
Journey, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Okami HD, Sly Cooper, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Demon's Souls, Ni No Kuni, God of War, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Infamous.
Might not all be to your cup of tea but to say the PS3 only has FPS games and racing games is really narrow minded.
So yea will probably look to get Wii u later next year to play the backlog of great mario games - 3d land, Super Mario U, Toad Tracker, Donkey Kong etc.
replacement LCD screens are £20 for the table controller. and in context £10 for a joystick repair kit for a N64 controller.
But it's ok the Xbox One elite controller is 150 bucks I suppose?
What do others think?
Possibly save £20 by getting a filthy unboxed one off ebay and spend half an hour cleaning it.
i want a 3ds xl lol but not at those prices ( also why is taking to November jus to put out a console white a white and orange shell ) might as well keep holding off for the nx unless they want ridiculous prices at launch/ hopeful £300 with a game.
at least now i can go finish my xbox games having picked up and xb1 s , finish gears 4 / dead rising 4 and then hopefully by sheer luck nx will be on my door step lol
Looking at a tear down the whole tablet cost around £59 ish to build 3 years ago , but 3 years is a long time in tablet electronics
the Wii U was a flop.it has some good games, but the whole idea, concept and the time it was released was ALL wrong.hence why it failed so miserably.
