Are they better than the DVD versions? Early series look like they were recorded by someone pointing a cheapo video camera at a monitor which was streaming a youtube 144p episode.

Also on Netflix too, and top quality there.
This deal is, however, a must-have for any fan, as it includes all bloopers, commentaries and all that good stuff BluRay comes with.

I haven't seen the DVD versions but watched the first season on Amazon Prime and quality is surprisingly good for a 22 year old show.

Yeah, I had the DVDs, the early seasons looked VHS quality! The new remasters look fantastic on streaming.
As a sci fi fan (Star Wars, Firefly, Star Trek Enterprise and Voyager) is this a likeable series? Premise sounds good but wary that it is extremely long and would hate to watch a series or two and then find it getting repetitive or tired of one off events and episodes. Are there long story arcs?

Yes; there is one running through most of the seasons (until one of the lead characters leaves), but with the exception of a few "two-parter" episodes, & a couple of re-occurrences of characters/plots, each episode is fairly self-contained.
Watching from the beginning when this first aired would have been a better way to watch it, but I think you will still get something out of it as a Sci-Fi fan.
PS. Also: Gillian Anderson. Nuff said?

Its all one long story arc really, obviously with filler episodes as they investigate individual cases, the story gets deeper and deeper as it's all about them trying to uncover "the truth", particularly regarding alien life.
It was a great series for its time, and I'd say well worth watching. I haven't seen the new ones however.

Thought the first couple of series were the best, loved it as a kid watching it in the 90's along with star trek TNG with my dad. The first X files film is excellent. Wouldn't bother with the others though.

Why don't you watch it on the Spike TV channel tonight and find out? The show is a mixture of monster of the week episodes and a much longer ongoing arc about government conspiracies. To be honest the stand alone episodes are usually the better ones. Oh and at times the show is funnier than many comedies.

It's a superb series, obviously over 10 seasons youll get the odd episode thats a bit naff but overall its fantastic. If you ever watched early supernatural its similar to that, with motw episodes but replace the heaven/hell storyline arc with aluen conspiracies.

You'll probably recognise a lot of actors when they were much younger throughout the show, always intrigued me.

Quality on Amazon is awesome, I've just finished the first series there and all were HD

The DVDs weren't exactly reference quality, but they are in the original aspect ratio. It's really no surprise that the high definition master looks great quality as The X-Files was shot on 35mm film and beautifully shot at that. The only issue with the HD versions is the new aspect ratio and the occasional upscale and cropped standard definition effects (for the first four seasons). All the live action photography looks fantastic in HD.

I honestly couldn't say as I live in a rural area and my internet speed isn't brilliant, so don't get best quality anyway! Others with hopefully a better internet speed have answered.
