To produce these they went back to the original 35mm negatives and put the episodes together from scratch, putting all the separate passes together and so on. Almost everything was done "in camera", the very few CGI elements were done again from scratch but done to reproduce the original faithfully. Season 2 of the Blu-ray the visual effects was outsourced to a different company who didn't do quite as good a job, they weren't used again. Everything else is pretty much perfect, and the show looks better than most shows made today due to the incredible production values at the time. They put an obsessive amount of detail in that would never be visible in standard definition, it is only now in the Blu-ray release you can truly appreciate the work they did.
Honestly apart from the 1.33 aspect ratio it looks like it was made yesterday, this release is that good!

Great value, although the show itself feels slightly dated now. Shame they won't give DS9 or Voyager the BD treatment - can leave 'Enterprise'.

I actually felt that a lot of the stories were actually really relevant, and after the remaster it doesn't look bad at all compared to some of the current sci fi around.

The Blu-Ray STTNG box set is remastered. Not in widescreen, unfortunately, but due to not having the original CGI files they are unable to extend it. Regardless this is a great boxset, and a fantastic price in this deal.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was shot on 35mm film, which can be scanned at a much higher resolution than 1080p HD. The difference between the DVDs and the Blu-rays is staggeringly good.
It will be the best £40 you've ever spent on home video.
The 1.33:1 aspect ratio had nothing to do with CGI files, nearly all the effects were optical effects with practical models and matte paintings, some effects have used CGI (phaser fire et cetera) for the new master. They food pretty much all of them, but they did have to recreate some because of their lower resolution (all the models were shot at a high resolution).
The 1.33:1 aspect ratio is correct anything else would be a disservice to the show. If your TV or Blu-ray player has a decent zoom setting, you can pretty much get what the 16:9 versions would look like by zooming in. There wasn't enough room on the sides (of the negative) to do anything else.

I know it was shot on 35mm, but a lot of TV shows in the past were not stored, and usual lower quality copies were used instead. and I am pretty sure the TNG was one of those shows which had some seasons that are not in the master format as such the HD has had to be remastered by special companies.
I am not doubting anything you say but I was just wondering because i do remember there being massive issues with at least season 2 of TNG, in fact if i remember rightly the DVD's were put together using the Taped copies.

Amazing price. I have this set, and as a long time fan I can guarantee that those old enough to have watched these episodes when they first aired on tv or watched the vhs / DVD's will be blown away by the audio visual upgrade these Blu-rays offer.
If in doubt I recommend spending a bit of time reading this review. http://m.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-The-Complete-Series-Blu-ray/153852/
As the other member posted. Most of our classic TV shows were shot on film and are still stored safely (obviously there are exceptions), but when they weren't edited on film, there's a huge cost to go back and re-edit them. The Next Generation was one exception and was a mammoth undertaking (one we might not see again), the started from the ground up and remade the show. If the show was edited on film (things like Battlestar Galactica were edited on film and relatively easy to master in high definition), it's a lot cheaper.
Where you might have some confusion is that the team mastering The Next Generation couldn't find certain scenes or shots, the film has been mislaid or lost, so they did have to go to the broadcast master tapes for the footage. Everything else was taken from film.
Anyway we're about to hit a golden patch of classic TV on Blu-ray, shows like The Incredible Hulk, The A-Team, Miami Vice, Magnum PI, Knight Rider and Quantum Leap are all on their way or have been released in other territories on BD. So we'll be reliving some classic TV moments in 1080p pretty soon!

Tempting though it would mean having to suffer through the numerous terrible episodes, in particular the early seasons. That and Troi's predictions where she states the obvious.

What aspect ratio are these episodes in? If they are either 16:9 or 14:9 that would mean they had to crop the top and/or bottom of the screen out.
JamesUK to littletime

4:3 - the original TV aspect.
They couldn't do 16:9 because although technically possible, they had items "in shot" which would appear on screen, theres a YouTube video explaining it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQtWeor58rU

Yes. TNG was filed on 35mm film which is actually better than HD, but it allows you to re-jig your aspect ratio into 4:3 or 16:9 or whatever film aspect the directors want. The only things that were on lower resolution 'video' were special effects, but they went back and redid all of the phaser shots and torpedos and planets, etc. with new HD visuals.
Everything else is 'as is'. The models they used were massive and could capture a lot of detail, but this was lost on the tv/dvd releases
