When I flew earlier this year it was "free" to have a long layover in Hong Kong on route to other destinations. took advantage of it and spent three days in the Kong. Well worth doing.

Going direct to book tickets with an airline is more expensive and than online travel agents in most cases ie, skyscanner. Can an insider please explain this?

The agents get bulk or charter rates.

Usually in the case of legacy carriers this is because they have leisure travel focused rates only available to travel agents, based on a minimum number of nights stay / stays over Saturday night. Generally they should only be used in conjunction with hotel stays as part of package, but many online travel agents circumvent the rules to sell as flight only at a discount to the rate found going direct.
These rates are not usually found with low-cost carriers, therefore if you are finding slightly cheaper headline rates by not going direct, these are often offset with hidden higher credit card / checked luggage / amendment charges and they make their money back through a higher overall cost once these things are considered.

Tip.
Press the call bell in the middle of the night when everyone is sleeping and ask for a Cup Noodle. :stuck_out_tongue:

Took advantage of the £280 direct flights to Hong Kong earlier this year posted via Holiday Pirates. However this is not a bad price.

Seems cheaper still to just book through a travel agent found through somewhere like Skyscanner or momondo. Why book using this link, direct with the airline?

Absolute bargain - paid c£750 for 1 adult and 2 children next Easter. However, stupid me, put my OH married name instead of her maiden name on the ticket. Can it be changed or is my bargain no longer a bargain?

Checkout wowcher. They have a deedpoll on at the moment for £12. You could get that and change your name easier than the flight and not cost a fortune.
