If you don't want the risk don't buy a Chinese phone. It is what it is and for that price you can't expect the kind of aftercare you'd get from Amazon or John Lewis.

You want the moto g4 that tesco direct are doing for £125. No stress there.

Anyone else's phone not arrived?

no, not complaining. I guess as I currently use a oneplus one I was expecting similar quality. the note is a nice phone, screen is crisp and muiu is responsive. it's just not as good quality. it's my expectations that are wrong not the phone.

by the way, I ordered mine with the silicon case and screen protector. the case fits although is a bit small so bends over the sides a little. the screen protector is fine except for a few mm top and bottom.

Just had a (very) quick Google. Looks like there are GPS issues associated with the Mi3 which seem software/firmware related:

http://en.miui.com/thread-43763-1-1.html

I'm sure there are more threads on this.

You need to look at that specific model of phone and see whether there are any reported issues with it with regard to using it in Europe. GPS should work anywhere in the world (subject to having the right software in the first place). If you buy a UK phone and take it to Australia for example, the GPS will still work. I don't know what regions the Mi3 is officially sold in, but with the Global International version of the Redmi 3 / Note numerous European countries are provided for in the ROM, so even if UK isn't (not officially anyway) that doesn't stop the GPS from working as there's no fundamental different between the UK and say, Spain (which is officially supported) in terms of GPS functionality. It may be case that you have a China specific ROM but that of itself doesn't necessarily prevent the GPS from working in another region, but it may or may not be a software issue. Have a look at the Miui forums because if there is an issue with this, there is a pretty good likelihood that someone has already raised it.

Forgot to mention one thing about the camera on this though - it's actually 4K capable. It's not enabled by default but use Open Camera and you can select the 4K as the chipset supports it. It's still limited by the quality of the lens, sensor etc, but having a 4K shooter is pretty rare for a phone at this price point.

Put it this way. The component cost of an iPhone 5 is about ~ $220 for the 32gb version. Within that, the camera unit is $18.

http://i.imgur.com/LxStsZF.png

On top of that there will probably be another $20 or so in licensing fees for the technology used. On top of that still there will be R&D, operating costs, sale and marketing costs, all of which have been estimated to equate to around another $60 or so per phone. So that's about a $300 production cost per phone.

The Redmi 3 Note costs about $165 retail for the standard 3gb/32gb version and that's with 3 times more DRAM, and the higher licensing costs to manufacturers associated with Android, Qualcomm etc.

What do you think the cost/quality of the camera unit is going to be like in that? What the camera unit cost going to shrink to? $8? $6? $4?

You don't buy a phone at this price point for it's camera. In perfectly lit conditions it's 'okay' but anything less than perfect and it's going to struggle. Night shots are particularly poor, but that's the case with any sub £200 phone as you cannot produce a phone at that price with an high quality (expensive) camera unit due to the economics involved.

Camera unit comparison - Samsung S5K3P3 v Sony IMX298 (bigger sensor, OIS etc)

It's the same as all mid range cameras. Decent enough in good light, not great in low.

It will be sufficient for most, but if you want a really good camera you typically have to buy high end phones or a proper camera.

I am tempted to go to the unofficial way to be honest...i just want to have root and avoid the CM rom. Ordered 2 of these in gold (32GB/3GB). Both payments were declined by Santander (Zero) and Halifax (Clarity) respectively for suspected fraud.

I figured I'd lost the deal...but signed in to AliExpress a few hours after the deal closed to see I could still complete payment. Having done so, I've now received confirmation that one of the phones has shipped via standard mail. I also now have cash back tracking confirmation on both phones.

Pretty pleased so far with the AliExpress experience.

From the reviews I have seen, the Moto G4 has a v.good camera for the money. I was tempted by it....but just couldn't turn down the significantly better specs/design of this Note 3.

I'm personally just going to treat this as having a usable camera...and then make sure I take my Canon EOS M with me for any proper photo opportunities.

Great camera phones below £250 just don't exist (unless you include the firesale going on at the moment for the Lumia 950)

Looks like the price of the Note 3 Pro SE from the retailer in this thread has jumped back up to £175 for the 3gb/32gb version and £147 for the 2gb/16gb version.....

Supply and demand eh?
nige182
21 Sep 16 #160
Yeah, I only had a quick look and saw the 3GB version for £200, didn't have a further look just yet, might have done later. Though I am a bit disappointed that 3GB is the maximum. The OnePlus has 4GB and even that is behind flagships now. I know these are not in the same price brackets, and I have a Chinese mobile at the moment, but if I upgrade I think I want to feel the jump more.

I might just wait for a good Chinese handset running Android 7, at least then I am upgrading the OS too, my current one is on Marshmallow.

One Plus 3 is alot more expensive though at around £300. The Note 4 is about £125 for the 2gb/16gb version (though there's no signs of an official International Global ROM as yet?) and about £155 for the 3gb/64gb version, albeit without suppport for Band 20 4G.

Your purposes for buying it look very different to robertfrancis1975, which is fair enough. Also, appears everyone you bought it for is satisfied with its camera, which is also fair enough.

robertfrancis1975, on the other hand, is looking for a relatively inexpensive (up to £200) phone, with a standout camera to rival or surpass his LG G2. I'm sorry, but this is not going to do it (unless he lowers his standards). My posts to robertfrancis1975 are meant primarily for him & his specific needs. Please note that I did not say or infer that this Xiaomi was a bad phone or has a bad camera at any point.

Personally I am rather tempted by the OnePlus 3, but that Redmi Note 4 Pro does look tempting too. The Redmi Note 3 Pro is only a little better than my current phone I think, so since I don't 'need' to upgrade yet I am trying to hold out for a bigger jump when I do upgrade.

Reviews of phone cameras in general, reviews of Chinese-sourced phone cameras & gut feeling

Show me a single review (that's not your own) of a Chinese-sourced phone with a standout camera that costs under £200.

If you suggest the Xiaomi Mi 5, then I already covered that in another thread.

robertfrancis1975 has a LG G2, who's standout camera will have this one for breakfast & then some.

I want this guy to be fully satisfied with the phone's camera in the new phone in comparison, & this is unlikely to cut it unfortunately. Very good value, yes. Buying it for it's camera, NO. Run for your life

This will most likely have a reasonably good camera, but then again, I don't think as good as your LG G2 unfortunately.

Sorry, I keep popping up in all your threads saying the same thing (more or less!) about most of the phones' cameras that you've enquired about. As of now, I've yet to come across a direct Chinese-sourced phone with a standout camera.

The upcoming Chinese-sourced Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe seems to have a more than decent camera (from what I've read so far), but it's a highend phone & will be quite expensive.

Edit: Another upcoming one to consider for its camera is the LG V20, but then again will be quite expensive.

I reckon the LG G4 may have suited you best & for a reasonable price (which seems important to you as well), but pity about its bootloop issue :disappointed:

Btw, a camera is sometimes only as good as it's user & I think these are incredible photos taken by a reasonably good Huawei P8 (last year's 'P9'). It has the 1 standard rear camera, unlike its newer P9 model, which has 2 better Leica-certified ones. I also have a P8, but my photos are nowhere near as good - but I haven't really put in the work to experiment or use its finer Pro settings to good effect:

Had 4 Chinese branded phones. One (Ulefone) went bad and I got a refund. Two Xiaomi's going strong after 9 months and MIUI is a good OS IMO. 4th is a LETV which is the best phone I've owned...(and the best audio I've ever heard from a portable device, by far). These phones don't seem to suit teenagers who use them intensely though - two of my son's friends have had problems with Redmi Notes.

My Moto G also locks to GPS almost instantly, that's the beauty of main stream global manufacturers like Motorola, LG & Samsung. I strongly think all chinese phones have GPS configuration designed to suit satellite constellation in their region and some tweaks into rom might improve but who knows.

That's a good price for this phone and I've got one on order.
I paid a bit more and got it from Geekbuying because I wanted the protection of section 75 from my credit card if it doesn't turn up or fails prematurely. I don't think you can rely on section 75 buying from AliExpress as technically they are an escrow service.
They took the money on the 4th Sept and no sign of it yet shipped by standard (free) air mail so I wouldn't recommend that option if you're in a hurry.
I had also heard that AliExpress say that their warranty covers us in the UK but it's hard to press the point when the website clearly doesn't list UK as a country covered by the warranty?

You've linked to a page for a model of that phone that was brought out specifically for the Taiwan market. If you've got that Band 20 Taiwan version, you'll just have to wait.

Miui 8 is available for all the other versions of the phone ie Snapdragon 650, MTK etc.

I got Miui 8 through an OTA update. It was actually released on 23 August.

Official download page here has Miui 8:

If you buy this then you need to flash the rom and replace it with one from Xiaomi.eu.

These Chinese stores put their own garbage rom on them which do not work properly and are stuffed with adverts.

No - you used to be able to take it off in the Aliexpress App, but now it is not possible on either.

heat. ordered, swore i would never buy a "cheap" chinese phone, but have been in desperate need to get into the modern world, still clinging onto my lumia 1020 - had this grand notion i would save up and buy my first iphone or note 7, but as per usual, i just can't afford it in reality.

really looking forward to the scenario where when i need an app i can actually download it now, rather than it not even being available on windows phone! will miss the always on screen terribly though :disappointed:

20 Sep 16 #58
Damn! Just paid £142 from Geekbuying; I would try and cancel and order this but previous experience has told me that i will end up with 2 phones (and returning is expensive).

I bought the standard one for my son and it was an excellent phone for 4 weeks until he dropped it (waste of time me buying those tempered glass screen protectors!). I have tried to replace the screen, which wasn't too bad a job. Unfortunately, in my bench test before fixing I forgot to check the bottom buttons which do not work! It's easier to buy a new one and fix the old one at my leisure.

Only problem with this is that it will not fit the standard case as it is 2.5mm longer (think that I will try the heat gun on it!).

I just sold my non band 20 version which I owned for 5 months. In answer to some questions:

No NFC with this phone.
This "Kate" version will work with all UK networks for LTE - it has both B20 & B3. It was very fast for me on Three.
Battery life is simply superb and NO, MIUI is not a battery drain, if anything it can be a pain the way it aggressively kills background apps to save battery although you can tweak this in settings.
The cameras are fine for snaps but do not expect flagship performance from a budget phone.
The screen is sharp and bright enough but washed out compared to flagships but unless you go around holding next to a Galaxy S7 you wont notice.
The thing flies with the Snapgragon 650 and 3gb of ram, no problems with running any apps.
One issue I had was that only up to 32gb cards are supported. When I put my 64gb card in it wasn't recognised. I had to format it in another phone (not a PC) for it to work.

I just went from iPhone 5 to a Redmi Pro 3 (very similar). It's a great phone, superb value, but you'll need patience getting used to a whole new operating system, and to transfer your contacts, messages, photos etc. Also, the camera on the iPhone5 is leaps and bounds ahead of this one, this one is only just OK.

Should the phone fail in the 1st year You will have to send it back to the seller, International signed for with Royal mail its not that expensive to send back,Customs charges can be levied on any international package you receive, try and get the seller to make a customs declaration on the package for $14 if they do it you most likely will not have to pay Customs charges and courier or Royal mail for administration of the charges.
chrissatchell
20 Sep 16 1 #42
Just to clarify a few things for people:

DHL will almost always end up with customs charges on phones, better going for standard post if you can wait
This is an official global rom so it won't be locked like other sellers, it will update fine
I believe the UK warranty offered is around £8-9 for the year, well worth getting as returning to china is a massive pain
The previous version covered 4G for Three and one or two others, this one has all bands unlocked for all 4G providers
It is a VERY good phone, the only issue I've come across is the power button having issues if used a lot, I'd suggest when you get it setting it so the volume buttons wake it also (loads of info on how to do this online)
Play Store is installed
I believe it is NOT NFC capable

I've used a number of Xiaomi products including currently having the original Redmi Note 3 Pro and I believe it is a fantastic phone for the money, I had the MI3 when it had flagship killer status and I was gutted when I dropped it and smashed the screen as it was an awesome phone. I'm waiting on a replacement screen coming to sort it out for my girlfriend to use instead of her 5S.

If anyone has any questions, let me know.

If you don't want the risk don't buy a Chinese phone. It is what it is and for that price you can't expect the kind of aftercare you'd get from Amazon or John Lewis.

You want the moto g4 that tesco direct are doing for £125. No stress there.

Xiaomi is one of the largest phone makers in the world. I own one of their devices and its a great piece of kit. Their quality control is really good. They are also one of few Chinese companies updating their phone's OS for a reasonable amount of time. 99% of the time you'll be fine. However, if something goes wrong, you'll waste a lot of nerves/ /energy/time/ trying to get in touch with their customer sevices, sending the phone back. That's the risk associated with buying from a chinese website.
