If they are the same price, why buy the older one? The new design is smaller, quieter and uses less power. The only reason not to buy the new design (if the price is equal) is because you need an optical port.

It depends on how many games you have on the go... If you just buy single / local multiplayer games and trade them in, 500GB is plenty but if you have a long-standing PS Plus subscription, digital purchases and like your library to be available at all times (like me), a 2TB USB drive can be found for £50-60.
