Why is this so hard for people to understand? If your budget is £100, it's £100 - not £120, not £150, not £200... Some people have stricter budgets that some, and while you or I may not be one of those, £30 (30% more in this case) is a lot for specs and dual-SIM functionality they just might not care about. 1GB is fine for basic tasks, it will just complete things slower, this is just like the Windows tablets threads where so called 'experts' turn up saying Windows won't run with 1GB when it is actually fine.
If you are after a new branded handset for under £100, this is a good purchase, end of.

1gb ram these days is pretty awful. It wouldn't be long until you have noticeable lag.
If you can afford £20 more get the Moto G 3rd edition. An extra 1gb ram makes a huge difference to performance.

Still for £26 extra you can get the non-Play G4 from tesco and that has 2GB RAM, a way better screen, a better camera. This Play model may be fine if you're seriously on a budget but the more advanced model is a big step up for not much money.
Picard123
19 Sep 16#70
That's because she doesn't have a clue about performance. Moto E 1gb is about the crappiest, slowest, worst performing phone you can get from any mainstream manufacturer. She probably thinks lag and lock ups are normal. You are equally clueless.

19 Sep 16#63
You're right, it has been discussed about a billion times, and many people disagree with you (even some in this thread who actually own this phone!). If 1gb was "obsolete" then why are so many still being produced? Think I'd rather trust the phone manufacturers than your sweeping statements. Some people refuse to accept that many smartphone users only use a couple of light apps and don't mind a bit of lag now and then.
Picard123
19 Sep 16#62
That has been discussed about a billion times on here. I've already posted lots of messages about the feasibility of 1gb on a smartphone in 2016 and how Android (inefficiently) handles apps in memory. Anyone who knows anything about smartphones knows that 1gb is pretty obsolete these days. If he doesn't believe me and can't be bothered to Google the answer (when it's the first bloody link on Google), and instead wants to waste £100 on what's going to turn into a super slow and laggy phone, and listen to someone who doesn't have a clue like yourself, then be my guest....
Yes, it works, but you have to get rid of all the background apps (like Facebook). And I wonder whether they will stop this in the next version - they already blocked rooted phones in 0.37, so that would be the next logical step. Requirements clearly state 2GB of RAM...
TL;DR do not buy, not enough RAM.

Thanks for posting, reasonable price. But does this 4th gen suffer the same gyroscopic jitter that renders the 2nd gen version unusable when using Google Cardboard VR?
My Moto G (2nd Gen) with 1GB RAM sat at about 700MB in use. My 2GB Xiaomi running the same stuff sits at 1.4GB in use. Sure the Xiaomi can conceivably run more in the remaining memory but personally I'll never max either out. I don't game but doubt I could run enough concurrently to max either phone out.

19 Sep 162#49
It depends what you do. If you want to multitask, 1GB will be a pain. Having a browser open, with multiple tabs, while doing other things like listening to music, a lot of the times the media player will force close to free up memory. If you don't do more than single tasks then 1GB is OK. One thing you need to remember is that the phones GPU uses memory so thats 200MB or so reserved. 2GB is fine.

19 Sep 16#48

Phone size, this play is quite large, and the normal is massive (being an original MotoG user and a similar sized G3 user) Not everyone want massive phones to watch things on.
If only Moto had made this Play with the same guts as the standard G4 and not fobbed everyone off with what is now basically an 'E' revision, I'd be buying a moto phone again.
The G3 size is about as large as I would want to go, I'd prefer it to be smaller still though, original Moto G and the E are a nice usable not getting in the way size.

As a user of this phone I must defend its lack of ram. For a 1gb of ram phone, it is surprisingly responsive. Can run most apps without a problem but obviously some of the more labour intensive apps do lag. I've had it since it was released and found it to be quite the good little Android.

I was tempted to get it at £90 from CPW on upgrade because I wanted a stock Android phone with NFC but with 1GB RAM it's no good to me. Although saying that the Moto E 2nd gen I've been using for the last month has been wonderful. It's really surprised me how well it performs and it doesn't hang at all.
