Longest ever interest free period card, as with many of these things some may not get the full 28 months more details in comment 1 credit to MSE for the additional info
Longest claim is for purchases not balance transfers, this is the longest purchase card rate ever.

I've never had a credit card before, so excuse the possibly stupid question: if the central banks raise interest rates, does Tesco have a legal right to increase the rate of this product before the 28-month term ends? -or before any other period of time?
I don't want to get burned, but this would really help me out with a bigger purchase which I am good for and could re-pay within 6 months. Cheers!

Advice please, if I were to use this card to pay a current credit card bill/balance would that be classed as a purchase or a balance transfer? Similarly if I was to transfer money from it via PayPal to another recipient would this be classed as a purchase? Cheers

...but still better than nout? :sunglasses: Plus there's always another card from another provider to try? Have you tried the Post Office one? When I reached my credit limit they actually sent me a letter offering to automatically increase it (by another £2k). Admittedly with current accounts not offering best rates without having to juggle smaller amounts between several accounts while you 'spend' on this it's not the most amazing time to take advantage of it, but still far better than the alternative in any cashback credit card.

While it seems like a good deal since the credit crunch they just won't lend to make full use of these cards. I'd probably need £25k to make full use over 28 months. But if I applied I would only be offered around £5k which means using it for 5-6 months and then stop using it. So the potential savings are not so great.

Because the world could end tomorrow and who wants to be the schmuck who doesn't get to laugh at the banks as that wad of debt they've amassed gets wiped clean!
Thing is my means increase as time goes on, sensible use of credit allows you to benefit and enjoy life while you're young. I have a car I bought on credit, it has appreciated in value since I bought it to the point that even if I'd been saving the repayments over the last 5 years I still wouldn't have saved enough to buy it at it's current value.
A few years back I decided I wanted to do some travelling so got a card like this and lived off it for a year keeping my earnings saved as travel funds. During my travels I did some work in Australia, saved up enough thanks to their higher wages to then pay off the card when I returned home.
It's great you get that warm superior feeling from only buying things with money you've saved up, and some people do get trapped in a debt cycle mortgaging their future for things they don't actually need today. But credit has it's use for people who consider it carefully.

Yeah, give them a buzz. I did think the application was a bit odd in that it felt like you'd been approved and completed it, as it told you your limit and that you'd been approved, but you then had to expand ~3 sections and tick to confirm you accepted all of the T&C before it was really completed.

Wouldn't most people, if they're sensible with their cards and making the payments, be better off with the 40 month Money Transfer Credit Card? Or have I misunderstood
If you transfer the 95% of limit to your bank in the first 90 days it would be interest free, giving you 40 months rather than 28 -
0% interest on money transfers to your bank account for the first 40 months, with a 3.94% fee
Earn Clubcard points wherever you use your card, plus your usual points in Tesco Terms apply 0% interest on money transfers is applied to any transfers made within the first 90 days of opening your account, if you make your minimum repayments on time and in full each month. You can transfer up to 95% of your credit limit https://www.tescobank.com/sec/credit-cards/money-transfer/index.html
So you get the money up front, and have longer to spend it, though I guess the monthly min payments will be more to start with, and you only get to go up to 95%.

Yes, assuming the credit limit they give you covers more than the cost of the insurance and that the insurer accepts Mastercard (most will, but will charge an extra fee). If you pay the card off within the 28 months you won't incur any interest. Keep in mind you'll need to be able to make the minimum card payment each month.

gwapenut
22 Sep 16#98
Not necessarily, their minimum monthly payments are 2.5 x more than tesco - this leads to quite a staggering loss of balance transfer benefit if you want to keep the whole balance, rather than eventually just half of it, transferred for the entire period.

I used to have the exact same problem with Tesco a couple of years back. My credit history was always excellent and I had cards with major providers but tesco was refusing me for credit cards. I was quite surprised when tesco approved mine yesterday. I wasn't suggesting for a moment that having a credit card is the sole basis for credit assessment when it comes to a mortgage application but it would certainly help, especially if you're weak in other areas and if lenders are being particularly strict because of the economic situation.
I had a friend who had never applied for a credit card or loan in the past as his Parents always gave him what he wanted or loaned him cash and he did struggle to obtain a mortgage with his lack of credit history cited as the reason. This was shortly after the credit crunch when lenders tightened their belts.
I was simply saying that holding a 0% card such as this will be nothing but beneficial so long as you are sensible and strict in paying at least the minimum monthly payment and clearing the balance before the offer period ends.

I never used a credit card in my life, got a mortgage 5 times my salary and the interest rate was purely based on LTV and was very cheap.

Most car dealers won't allow you to put more than a 2-3 grand down on a credit card, as they don't want to be stung by the UK Consumer Credit Act (Section 75) which (in theory) would allow you to get your money back if the car was faulty in any way (e.g. a squeaking windscreen wiper etc).

The car retailer will probably want to charge you a handling fee for that. Pay as much as you can as deposit - there is usually no handling fee for that - and if they insist on a CC handling fee for the balance, negotiate an "at cost" amount ... BEFORE you commit / put down the deposit.

I signed up for the Tesco 2 year 0% on transfers & 0% transfer fee last month. I like the fact they let you set the DD to any amount you like - not just the minimum amount like Mbna do (it was £25pm min repayment for me but I set DD to £100pm so I can clear the full balance in 2 years). It's a fantastic card if you are actually going to clear your debt, but watch out for the small print if you're not as they whack on the interest of what's outstanding at the end of your 0% period.

If you got the full 28 months you would have ~27 months to pay it off without getting charged anything extra. I think the minimum payment for Tesco is £25 or the balance if lower.
So £200 will be 8 months of minimum payment.

It's a good deal, but I'm not surprised that they are having to offer deals like this. Tesco credit cards used to give you 1 Clubcard point for every £2 spent outside of Tesco stores, but recently they have dropped that to 1 point for every £8 spent. I suspect that quite a lot of people who were using Clubcard credit cards for all shopping have switched a lot of spending to other cards. (You can get 1 point for every £4 spent on the "premium" card, but there's an annual fee of £150 for that!)

That's like saying selling kitchen knives is encouraging people to stab their spouse...
They're not encouraging people to run up debts, they're enabling people to sensibly manage their finances. I spent over five grand on various big ticket purchases for a new home, on an 18-month 0% card 4 years ago and spent three years paying it off, via a 0% balance transfer card. Makes far more sense to me than saving hard to buy things one at a time (or God forbid, using store finance), especially when cashflow is tight due to moving fees etc.

We'd definitely set up a direct debit. We currently always pay via debit cards, we're thinking paying with a credit card and merely having a direct debit is practically the same yet will just up our credit score. We'll probably set a reminder for 2 years to stop using the card instead of the 28 months, unless Tesco offer some sort of reminder service.

If you're disciplined then building any sort of credit record is always good as having no record can cause issues when the time comes for major purchases like mortgages, cars etc. I made a point when I was younger of always taking advantage of any 0% finance deals when buying stuff and my credit rating is sky high as a result.
But always set up Direct debits to cover at least the minimum payments and make sure you've cleared the balance before the offer period runs out. With a 0% spending card I'd always close the account once the offer period is over and find another so you're not tempted to use it and attract interest.

28 months of having the card

BTW anyone that's had one of these previously and is hoping for a decent chunk of Club Card points as a bonus, think again. They've really gone Scrooge McDuck :/ (as have other providers since the rules on charges to merchants changed). I kept mine after a previous 0% offer, purely for Tesco shops. But contemplating getting rid now.

Hope some one can help on this,
I currently have a tesco CC but my rewards have ended (0% on purchases 28 months etc etc) im just about to balance transfer to another card with similar rewards and then cancel my tesco CC
My question is....if i return to a tesco CC (or any other that i had a CC with) would i be eligible for the same rewards as opening a new account? Im guessing they wouldn't as I've had one in the past or is it a time frame thing like wait a year and apply again?
Thanks if any one can help me on that

Pretty sure you would as long as you've actually closed the account down and not just left it dormant and unused.
I think you have to have closed the account for at least 6 months to be eligible for a new card!!

Varies by provider, many will not consider you a new customer until you've been away for 6+ months (some as much as 12 months).
Whilst it won't apply with this card, its also worth checking who the provider actually is on any other cards you have when applying for a new card. Sometimes you can be rejected for new offers as the underlying provider is the same (ie. the branding maybe XYZ Card, but the provider is MBNA and you already have an ABC Credit Card which is also MBNA).

I can tell you that you will be elegible now. I personally have 2 tesco credit cards. As soon as the intro period ran out on my first one I applied for a second one and was accepted. My first card was totally paid off though.

I know it's not a balance transfer card, but, can you transfer a balance on it for the 28months?
Many congratulations on "you're", well done! That's right folks......it's NOT "your!"

Not if they're sensible, the type that would go silly and get caught would do so whatever the period. I've just taken out the 27 month Sainsburys one to use for some unexpected dental work I need but it'll be cleared long before the end of the offer period. They have their uses if you're careful.

28 months is the longest ever deal? Hmm I really doubt that, maybe for Tesco it is.

It is for anyone - this is a 0% spending card, not a 0% Balance Transfer.

Good find, I use a credit card like this for big purchases and pay back monthly or when my annual bonus comes. It is an interest free loan so much better than paying 3 or 4% for an official loan. I do remember Tesco had a really poor and limited online account system, but this was a few years ago.

as others have said, you are talking balance transfers this is purchase, pity you can't add back some heat, but you might want to delete your posts to avoid confusion. I have also made it clear in the OP

balance transfer card is different to 0% interest free spending card
this deal is for 28 months 0% interest free spending, which is true that this card is the longest ever for interest free spending

Wow, looks like a lot of people have got their pitchforks out...for a credit card.
Heat added, OP-this is the best 0% purchases card I've seen - I just applied for the Post Office card, which was the best, but it's only a month less.
Opening post
Longest claim is for purchases not balance transfers, this is the longest purchase card rate ever.

All good no problems?
£3,300 limit!
Never got any confirmation email etc I just logged into the Tesco bank page and see my details in there now.
I guess the card will be on it's way!
I don't want to get burned, but this would really help me out with a bigger purchase which I am good for and could re-pay within 6 months. Cheers!
We currently have one of these from July 2015 that is due to end February.
Whether it confirms or not is another thing
That explains it.
I called them but they are closed till Monday so will give them a call then. Cheers again
It asked for some details etc then the battery went dead.
However I filled the details with the address so they should be able to locate via that.
Good stuff, you got the pin already!
If you transfer the 95% of limit to your bank in the first 90 days it would be interest free, giving you 40 months rather than 28 -
0% interest on money transfers to your bank account for the first 40 months, with a 3.94% fee
Earn Clubcard points wherever you use your card, plus your usual points in Tesco Terms apply
0% interest on money transfers is applied to any transfers made within the first 90 days of opening your account, if you make your minimum repayments on time and in full each month. You can transfer up to 95% of your credit limit
https://www.tescobank.com/sec/credit-cards/money-transfer/index.html
So you get the money up front, and have longer to spend it, though I guess the monthly min payments will be more to start with, and you only get to go up to 95%.
After that I didn't resubmit due to risk of having another credit search.
Shall I call them tomorrow?

how long would this card take to arrive if I were to sign up for it now?
I was going to make a purchase tomo using another card but this works better for me but unsure on how long till I can use the card? thanks
MSE agrees: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/credit-rating-credit-score#rebuild
Do I need to have Tesco account to have this Credit Card?
I actually do have Tesco account but intend to switch it soon...
Thank for explanation
Dont believe using a credit card for the sake of getting a good mortgage actually works. Only to get a higher credit limit i think.
I've a £5k limit Halifax Clarity card than I spend £1000-2000 on monthly and clear off every 2-4 weeks, but for some reason Tesco really hate me.
I managed to pay £13k for a 1% handling fee 6 years ago (got the 1% back in reward points plus 9 months' interest as a bonus).
* though I always pay at least £100 to be sure.
Can anyone confirm if upon completing a successful application you received anything via email? Thanks.
Thanks
So £200 will be 8 months of minimum payment.
If I were to purchase a £200 product within the first month of getting this card, how long would I have to pay it off? Am I bound to a minimum monthly payment or how does it work?
Sorry, currently reading through the terms but bit of a minefield
Other alternative, post office matched CC. 27 months on purchases and 16 months balance transfer.
Plus £25 quidco. so you could actually make up for one less month.
http://www.postoffice.co.uk/credit-card/matched
They're not encouraging people to run up debts, they're enabling people to sensibly manage their finances. I spent over five grand on various big ticket purchases for a new home, on an 18-month 0% card 4 years ago and spent three years paying it off, via a 0% balance transfer card. Makes far more sense to me than saving hard to buy things one at a time (or God forbid, using store finance), especially when cashflow is tight due to moving fees etc.
Have some heat.
Can't believe they are encouraging people to run up debts interest free for 28 months! So many people are going to get hammered/ caught out when the 28 months is up.
But always set up Direct debits to cover at least the minimum payments and make sure you've cleared the balance before the offer period runs out. With a 0% spending card I'd always close the account once the offer period is over and find another so you're not tempted to use it and attract interest.
Its just handy to know as sainsburys dont have a CC app and tescos one is great + good to know i can come back.
Thanks for the help
I currently have a tesco CC but my rewards have ended (0% on purchases 28 months etc etc) im just about to balance transfer to another card with similar rewards and then cancel my tesco CC
