I though ram beyon 4-6gb didnt make much difference for laptops? Does 12gb ram really improve performance

Well it depends what you want to do. If you are only using the laptop to play on Facebook then no you do not need 12GB of RAM. But then again would you think it worth spending over 500 on a laptop when you could do the same thing on a laptop half the price.
Alternately, if you are a power user with lots going on and running a VM or two then 12GB is very nice indeed on a laptop.
