Have this exact printer and it's a sod to use so called compatible inks. It refuses to recognise them and unlike some other models it seems, there is no option to override it or continue anyway with printing.
Cheap printer yes, but genuine inks are around the same price! Personally would not recommend at all.

I bought a higher numbered model and had two die within weeks then the third when I replaced the ink. Using genuine cartridges from Amazon and as soon as I changed them the print quality went all to pot so a couple of clean/align attempts and it decided it was empty again without ever printing properly.

Not really to be honest, I've used compatible ink on all my Epson printers. I mainly use the printer to print office paperwork these days, but it's still very good quality for photos. Just to point out, I've not used the model in the Original post!

Compatible inks work fine in these, Very good and so far the printer has lasted 3x longer than any other printer I've had.

They pop up and warn you the ink isn't original but as long as you press ok it will let you print.
Suppose a good feature for anyone trying to find out if they have bought fake "genuine" epson ink.

Did you notice any difference in the originals you received with the printer and the svp ones?

I just looked at the capacity of the epson 29XL original cartridges, the black is 11.3ml(470 pages) and the colours are 6.4ml(450 pages) each. Might help people to compare what they are getting when they buy.

I think Epson is the worst for accepting inks - I've had genuine inks rejected before. When it does accept them it starts "charging" ink which basically means wasting it. I miss my old Brother printer, was much better at being tolerant of different inks.

Bought and returned! It is not the SX-235, you can buy replacement ink easily, this is the XP-235 exactly the same but updated firmware stops generic ink replacement! Sent it straight back and bought a HP-3630! £29 from JL with 2 year guarantee on a price match with Raymans. £1.99 a month for ink!

I bought the XP-335 from amazon a couple of weeks ago as there was not much a difference in price between it and the model below. Mines came with a small LCD screen also which is nice.

Does anyone know how much the cartridges on ebay are filled or what the approximate page output is?

I bought some ink from cartridge people when I ordered the printer and they state the amount of pages you are looking to get from the cartridge. For example for the normal epson 29 cartridge is 175 for black and 180 for colour, for the epson 29XL is 470 for black and 450 for colour and cartridge people compatible cartridge it is 650 for black and 600 for the colour (http://www.cartridgepeople.com/Epson/XP/Expression-Home-XP-335-Ink-Cartridges). Also FYI I got 20% off using 'AFF20VC' and tracked 10% on quidco.

Can anyone confirm that this will run on compatible ink? I have an Epson and have bought comparable ink several times from cartridge world and other suppliers and they have never worked. Looks good, if only the ink wasn't a problem. Please can anyone confirm. Thanks in advance

The most important thing with buying any printer is the cost of cartridges. Epson are usually the best for compatibles. Sometimes there is a situation with compatibles that all must be from the same supplier, and replaced together. Obviously they must be chipped correctly. To cover yourself, buy on EBAY and before buying, get the supplier to confirm they work on your exact model. If they do not work, keep the evidence, ideally a photo of the error message. Then raise a dispute with EBAY, who are good at recharging the full cost to the supplier of faulty goods. You must be sensible, and install the cartidges properly, and maybe as a full set. I know this can be wasteful, but if it does not work, just reinstall the ones that do, and change the empty cartridge. If non EBAY, just mention Small Claims Court, and raise dispute with credit card company. Nationwide were extremely helpful, and efficient for me recently. Got full refund, including postage costs. ALWAYS pay by credit card for ALL online purchases.

I'm using Epson sx235w from 2012 and works fine with compatible inks. There are a lot of offers on ebay 4 colors for £4-5.

After reading all the reviews on the Asda page, I'm put off buying it completely. Apparently, generic inks don't work and often even genuine inks don't work. Looks like it could end up as an expensive ornament and I have enough of them !
