No cashback on that model but still a decent price for an entry level server with 500GB HDD.

I bought one last time round for £70 and in my opinion the build quality is FAR from poor, quite the opposite actually.

The 1600mhz 4gb will be bottlenecking the 2133 HyperX I would think? Sweet RAM, but definitely not getting the most from it.

It has 4x USB 3.0 but no gigabit ethernet? No way, this must be some sort of typo!

can you stick a graphics card in it and use it as a HTPC? i have an r7 250 lying around! would it work?

You wouldn't want to its ugly and as someone has already said the build quality is poor. Get a cheap silver stone case and a cheap i5 bundle and you will have a much better system for htpc

Comes with a decent bronze rated PSU as well which was a nice surprise, think it would take a 750ti quite easily. Good deal if you want a cheap gaming PC.

Confirm i7-4790k working fine in mine with A02 (? - not double checked this ) BIOS ver. No reason to think that i5-4690 wouldn't work as well.
Spot on. I got an amazon warehouse deal on the 'K' version...so ended up with it. Keep forgetting the distinction!

Thanks for that link, really useful info. So given the choice over a ML110G6 with 16gb for the same price, you would go for this ?

As per most large OEM's they provide a customised ESXi version. Main benefit are they come pre-installed with all drivers and VIB's for OEM Hardware.
Installed on an old 8Gb USB stick I had kicking around....

Yeah I missed the cashback deal oh well, this still seems like a tempting deal though. Trying to decide what to do as I can grab a HP ProLiant ML110 G6 with Xeon X3430 @2.4GHz/ 16GB RAM / 250GB going for about the same price. The extra memory would be very useful.
The Dell T20 does seem a bit like a glorified PC and I'm sure the HP would be better built but I guess the T20 is a lot quieter and consumes less power.
Did you have use any workarounds getting ESXi on there, I've read in a few places that the T20 isn't on the VMWARE HCL for any version....

Even without cashback this is still a pretty good deal, I have the same machine and it's doing very well (Ubuntu, Plex)

Gigabit confirmed. This screenshot taken from my T20 same model as this purchased last month
CPU in the T20 is a good 25% better than the Celeron 1610 in the Microserver though, always useful in ESXi...
No real issue with the ML110 only that it's getting on a bit and I fancied a hardware refresh :-)
Seems though that I'm not going to find anything with half the feature set or quality of the ML110 for less than £300-£400. Best things about the ML110 are the Dual onboard NIC's and onboard ILO3. Front drive bays are fairly handy but aren't hot swappable.
One thing I will give the T20 is that it's nice and quiet, it's a bit quieter than the ML110.
For basic ESXi use the T20 is upto the job though, I threw in some odd bits I had laying around (10gb Ram, 1x 128Gb SSD and 1x 1Tb HDD) and it's running 2x Win desktop VM's and a MacOS Desktop on ESXi6 without any issue...
I've kept the ML110 as my main Win 2012 server for now and will wait for something else to pop up to replace it.
btw...I paid £140 for my T20 with £70 cashback from Dell...I think that was a better offer

I have the Xeon version and got it in January for £150 odd. Can't fault it after buying some non-ECC ram

Interested to hear what non-ECC RAM members can confirm they have working in the Xeon. I want to get 16gb to top up the 4gb that it ships with, but don't necessarily need the ECC capability (or extra cost!).

why the 'k' processor? The board in this won't let you overclock it.

Bought one a couple of months ago to replace my aging HP ml110 server... Sadly build quality is a world away from the ml110 and the t20 has been relegated to be my lab esx server.
I think the deal minus the hdd with Cashback was way better I'm afraid so cold from me

I'm looking for some advice please, need to get something to run ESXI on, I need to set up some LABs as well a VM for general donkey work like torrents etc. What was the issue with the ML110, been looking at these on the bay. The CPU on this seems it might not be up to it and I would be better with a XEON. Also it needs to be quiet. Any advice ?

aside of the i7-4790k, will this take any Socket 1150 processor? I dont need that much power but requires a core i3 or i5 to replace the dual core bundled processor.

Yes. Go for a i5-4690k. Great value for what you get.

2 Sep 161#13
You can do that if you don't need ECC memory or error-checking, but it's never recommended to mix memory types.

Think I got mine for £97 after the last cashback deals.....not sure I ever seen the Xeon version anywhere near £150?!
finlay1888
2 Sep 16#11
You can stick a i7-4790k into this which makes it a bit of a beast for the money and surpasses the Xeon in terms of benchmark performance.
Also mix the stock ECC with Non-ECC RAM if needed (There may be a great reason for not doing so).

The website is wrong and it is gigabit. Every time a deal on this server comes up somebody asks this. It is definitely gigabit per many people on several different forums over the period these servers have been on deals.

I took interest to replace my mini server in this reading specs.....
Networking
Cabling technology10/100Base-T(
Ethernet LAN connection Yes
LAN controller Intel 82579
Ethernet interface type Fast
Seen the networking and wrote it off. All other specs look OK. You would have to purchase a network card for this to be any good as a server. Beware this if you are buying. I have no idea why anyone would even consider 100mbit lan interface these days let alone put it in a server. I dont even see the cheapest of laptops without a 1gbit port. Even most wireless connect faster these days. Rant Over
Googled LAN controller Intel 82579 and it appears to be a gigabit controller anyone know if the website might just be wrong?
