while it is more than the microserver deal, its a good price with the cashback as you will get a lot more bang for your buck in terms of processing power.

Equivalent to a i5-4570 which still retails for ~£175. Could pair with one of the recent GPU deals for a great budget gaming PC, although depending on the GPU, you may need to swap out the PSU.

From my personal experience E3-1225V3 performance is somewhere between i5-6600 and i5-6600K, way above i5-4570

Can you not get a molex to 6/8 pin power adapter? I have an old Precision P690 with a 1KW supply (250W at tickover), and a GTX960 which I think uses about 50W. With modern power saving technology this should be ok I reckon?

Wait for a gtx 1050, no power connector just 75w rated using PCIe bus? Should get almost gtx960 performance (maybe more) with half the power requirements so good for 1080p using the PSU it comes with.

As Skylake didn't have much gain over Haswell, it is still very similar to Skylake performance.
However, E3-1225V3 is the same architecture as i5 4570 (Haswell), released in same quarter, and with same clock rates. They're 2 sides of the same coin.

Used to get £110 cash back for one of these during the summer. Best deal right now though. Hot.

Pretty decent deal if you need a cheap server. ECC RAM does seem to help in keeping Win Server or Linux running and stable for long periods of time without restarts.

I have an i5-4570 in my main desktop PC and a T20 with the Xeon (running ESXi 6.0 and various VMs). They're basically the same chip apart from the Xeon having a bit more L3 cache - which only makes any difference with 'server' workloads.
What's Ubuntu like? Is it Linux and can the layman use it or will a windows man like me struggle?

It's just one "distro" or version of Linux, it's based on debian which is the most common and easiest to swap from windows to. Other debian based distros include Kubuntu (my favourite) the are several more but the main noticeable difference is the desktop interface you are presented with underneath is just the same.
Please note Ubuntu Server has no GUI at all, but don't worry there is not really such a thing as a server version in Linux as the required software can be added to any version to make it a "server".

I have the Pentium version of the T20, anyone know where you can get this exact Xeon from (at a non ridiculous price).

Cheaper to buy this and sell old machine, the CPU in this is worth 90% of this price
I am looking fr an operating system for my pc as I want to try an alternative to Windows. Is Ubuntu a good start?

Would this take additional 4 disks?

It has room for four 3.5" drives and two 2.5" drives, so you could do that as long as one or two of them are 2.5". However the motherboard only has four SATA ports - so you would need an additional controller card to support five drives.

Does 'bash shell' still exist do you know? and if so which distribution of Linux would I need? I used it years ago on 'Red Hat Linux' and I specifically remember a great feature of the command line thingy was you could repeat the previous command but make a change (one shot, search and replace) by just typing (I think):
^oldbit^newbit
great if you'd made a typo. Happy days, I could do with getting back into *nix.

Yes Ubuntu or kubuntu are a good start, you can download a live cd image to test without damaging your existing setup. It took me a while to get fully used to it but now I realise it's better than Windows and more stable.
OrribleHarry
16 Sep 161#22
Sure does its in Ubuntu and Kubuntu for sure.

16 Sep 16#23
Shall I download that on to a different pc and then burn to an iso?
OrribleHarry
16 Sep 161#24
Doesn't have to be a different pc any will do.
Yeah burn the iso on any pc (you can also use the iso to make a bootable USB using rufus) and then boot to it, you can then play about as though it's actually installed. I recommend trying a few distros before installing your favourite.
Good tip though is to perceivere as at first its very alien but just Google when your stuck and I promise you it will soon become apparent that anything can be achieved in Linux, quite a lot that cannot be done in Windows.

I have this (or a very similar) machine from a deal 6 months ago and boy I love it. Have added Windows 10, office, 20gb ram non-ECC unfortunately, two great screens, a 1tb ssd to run OS and key files, a second 1tb hdd, and a 3tb hdd... What a system and all pulled together for just a few hundred squid. Working like a dream performing stacks of functions at the heart of my family!

Sounds good but why do you say "non-ECC unfortunately"? I thought Dells were bombproof, are you getting Blue Screen of Death?

No, no probs at all, just would have preferred ECC RAM. To be honest, If the 4gb that ships with the unit had've been non-ECC, the notion of having ECC RAM wouldn't even have occurred to me!

Bought one of these from Ebuyer a few weeks ago. I'll be claiming my cashback soon, got to wait 30 days.
Added 3x4Gb crucial ECC (£30 on ebay), 240gb SSD £50 and a 1.5tb drive from my old system.
On the SSD I have Esxi with windows 10 on top and Pfsense firewall so I can funnel traffic through a VPN. I have the 2 sata drives Raw presented to win 10 and plan to add another small drive as slower storage for esxi, I will run various VMs from that for LAB scenarios.
Loving it, never played with virtualisation before. Has anyone doing something similar added a video card and got it working directly to their windows VM? Prime goal was to use this as a server but now I'm thinking it could double as a decent workstation too if I can do direct video as remote desktop is not ideal.

So has anyone cracked a graphics card in one of these. This looks like it might be the cheapest way for me to get a system to run a flight sim(so I can reserve enough budget for a VR custom built system). But not sure what the PSU is like on these things, am I stuck if I get something that blows the 75W budget on pcie or can I just get a molex to 6 pin to make up the difference one something like a 960 or 1060.
