Which non-reference 1060 is £189? At the same price and given the option I'd probably take a RX 470 over a GTX 970 for slightly better future proofing and less furore surrounding VRAM.

Edit - just seen it....you meant the 3GB 1060.....not sure that's a great option for any form of longevity. Certainly the AMD offerings are a better choice in that comparison.

Good price.

I'm excited for the gtx 1050, coming in at 75w is going to be king of the budget builds aimed at 1080p. I've love a £120 price point, with its supposed near 470 performance. In some ways I hope its nearer £170, otherwise it could finish AMD off, and then nvidia could charge anything they want for cards.

The 950 has just about reached £120 on a good day so I'll bet you'll be waiting a long time for the 1050 to arrive and hit that same price. Still, good luck :-)

Yeah loads places said the coilwhine would be the psu even though mine ran a 7970 before hand with no issues.. ocuk sold loads psus to people who thought this too haha and they then complained again about coilwhine still and had to swap anyway but some people kept the psu and only returned the card. Legendary salesman!!

I had an evga then a g1 both had coilwhine but the g1 only has it at really high fps. Best card ive ever bought even with all the issue like coilwhine and vram issue

Interesting! never had the opportunity to tell this story before. I was also affected by the coil whine, infact both my G1 970s were as I had them in SLI. I was told that if I got a new PSU (by overclockers) that was a higher efficiency rating that it would solve the problem. My immediate reaction was that of "what the hell are you talking about?! I'm not just some stupid and gullible end user". I actually asked for a reasonable explanation, that I never actually got.

Anyway to satisfy them as they would not drop it, I had two choices, to buy a new PSU at the efficiency rating to test it, with agreement they would refund the postage back if it didn't work, or to test it on one myself if I could get my hands on one. Well since we all run in the same circles I had access to many PCs with 'efficient' PSUs in, so begrudingly, I accepted and lugged my PC over to my brothers and began the arduous task of testing them. As it turned out he had a number of gold rated PSUs as he had a few PCs for LAN gaming. The results? They were correct, I could not get any coil whine from any of those PSUs, plugged back into mine and straight away it was audibly obvious.
So I bought a superflower 850w from OCUK with gritted teeth told them it was working.

Few months down the line, traded them up for a native 980 anyway due to the VRAM issue, despite not actually having a problem, the opportunity was there and I had decided that SLI with non-reference cards wasn't a great idea after all.

I never did buy the 2nd 980... xD

If you're gaming on a standard 60hz 1080p monitor there's no reason to go above a 970 imo.

I'm using it for a 4k monitor, I will get a 1070 one day but I'm only playing South Park, FIFA and Cities Skylines these days. The only one that pushes the 970 is Cities but I've made peace with that running at 30fps for now.

I did put in a hundred hours on a laptop at 1080p 18fps so 4k 30hz is wonderful. My brother's more into his gaming and acts like 30hz burns his eyes.

6 Sep 16 #30
Stay clear of 3gb cards if you plan to play recent games at max settings. For example Hitman and Rise of the Tomb Raider both need 4gb+ for the top settings. And its likely new games will want 4gb+.

That said if you don't play games with demanding graphics the 3gb 1060 is a good budget buy.

I'm in no rush, my 750ti OC low profile was £90 something the week it was released and doing ok at the moment. Going by 750 to 950 series inflation I wouldn't be surprised if the next 1150 card comes in at £200+, and the mid range 1170 pushing £500. Get your damn act together, AMD!

Can't believe how cheap these are, currently playing new dues ex on one of these, oc core by 160mhz easily, 2k monitor and runs smooth as silk with gsync on ultra settings, 40-60fps not bad for a 'budget' card in my books!

A bargain. I have the msi 970 g and its stunning. This weeks micro mart reviews mid priced cards and the 970 wins easily. It beats the new amd cards and the reviewer says the 970 to will easily run any game out there maxed out or thereabouts. Those who call this a budget card are just attention seeking and really don't understand much about computers.
Anyone wanting a big upgrade for little money, the 970 to will do that for relatively little money .

7 Sep 16 #53
Forgot to add. I'll be playing fallout 4 later at 4k with everything maxed out completely(aa not needed at 60hz 4k)with my 970. It looks incredible. I often just wander around the settlements just for the eye candy as it looks that good. I've heavily modded the graphics. This is what the 970 is capable of.

I've got the card, so here are a few thoughts:

The while 3.5GB VRAM fiasco is quite nonsensical, especially at 1080/1440p. I've not encountered any frame stuttering even in GTA V. Games look wonderfu and this card handles 1440p very well. It's a very quiet card, even under full load. I have it paired with a 4670K over clocked to 4.5 GHz and have also over clocked my card . I don't find the card to struggle much at all, but then I find anything at medium on AAA games at 1440p still looks amazing.

No coil wine on mine at all.

The card is, however, very heavy and has bent my pci slot. At the moment, everything works fine. But the card is leaning a fair amount. I suggest propping it up if you can.

It is a bit like the Silicon lottery with these 970s. I had the 970 strix, no coil whine at all but remember lots of people complaining, v good card if coil whine free. I got rid of mine a bit too early, had 350 ready to go for the 1070 launch. but refused to pay the extra 100,400-500 for a x70 card is a joke, even if it offers maxwell titan x performance. I too hope AMD sort themselves out as Nvidia are trying to set up the same "premium" business (overcharging) model as Apple.

I had trouble with my 7950 from day one with noise and performance. I will never go amd again, this is a tempting price to get back with the green team. I don't plan on going 4k for a while as my 1080p monitor is only a couple of years old. Ironically, I got it to take advantage of the 7950. Haha, won't be that naive again.

Depends how desperate you are as there are bound to be price reductions between now and Christmas. I have just bought the 970 because I own an XBox One and that is where I do the majority of gaming, but I wanted a decent card for the limited amount of (Flight Sim) I will be doing on my PC. Seemed pointless to keep stretching and stretching (I started off looking at a 750ti a few months ago, then went to considering a 950,960 and finally thought 970 why the heck not?). I did consider the 1060 3 and 6GB but it's another level for me and not sure I could justify the extra expense considering I was stretching it for the 970 and for what I need it would be overkill I think.
