was going to go for the pre order white console with fifa 17 for the same price but this looks to be a better deal. whats the difference with this console and the new s console?? what deal do you reckon i should go for?

So this is actually two separate deals and not a package or have I missed something? Would it not be better to just buy the console/extra controller/£20 voucher deal that has already been posted then buy the controller/Halo deal separately along with 3 bags of M&M's to take you over the £50 mark and then you get another £5 voucher.

But if you have a 4k TV like I do it streams 4k anyway as all 4k Tvs have decent media services built in. I also have a ton of space near my TV so I opted for the bigger console and pocketed a load of cash for more games and an SSD.
My TV also obviously upscales to 4k too as the games on the s are only upscaled at the console end rather than the TV. So only things I am missing is 4k blu ray and I haven't bought anything on disc in years, HDR which is mainly a marketing term just used on TVs with a high contrast ratio and high colour count, and about 5% performance in some games. Not worth the extra money in my opinion.

I have a 360 at present so not sure which to get. I know "scorpio" is coming out next year but will be very expensive and its all about 4k games. Will XBox one still be supported when it comes out? Comments?

the s will also have hdr for supported games, this is worth the extra cash if you have the right TV. upcoming forza horizon and gears of war will have hdr.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I know its early but my son wants xbox one (presently got 360) so looking to get upgrade for xmas. I was debating wether or not the 's' was worth getting or the normal xbox one. looking at your comments I'm presuming the 's' is best?

Everything he has said seems to make good sense to me. Do these actual facts you speak of suggest otherwise? Genuine question as on the face of it I would tend to agree with him but have done no research as this is the first I've really heard about the new model.

I think I'd be a bit uneasy about the internal power supply. I realise most things we buy have them built in and so far I've never had a power brick issue but I'm aware that plenty of people have with 360's at least. Given that space isn't an issue due to my consoles living in an av cabinet I think I'd be happier sticking with an external power supply as at least if it fails it doesn't turn your entire console into a giant door stop!

So someone else who must have an AV unit the size of Buckingham Palace it would appear :smirk:

Oh and I'm sorry there's never seemed to be an abundance of internal power supply problems with other consoles that have them.

The power brick having finally been dumped is more than enough to make the purchase of an S over the old fat version a no brainer and that's coming from someone who owns the Halo edition console from last year.

Not at all, just a regular av cabinet with standard width shelves. There's plenty of us that house our consoles in units like these so it makes no difference if the xbox gets smaller, it's still going to use one shelf only now with space either side that can't be used for anything assuming you want a neat and tidy look about the set up. The standard xbox one isn't that deep compared to a lot of av gear so hiding the power brick on the shelf behind the Xbox isn't a problem either so I can't see any benefit in having it housed internally. This is not the way everyone has their gear set up and I'm sure plenty of people will welcome the smaller unit but for many of us it's really not something worth paying extra for.

So I have missed something then? What extra benefit do you get from adding the two deals together at checkout?

​what about airflow? admittedly I don't know how the Xbox one flows but if it's like the ps4 then the more space you have around it the better.

That's a very good point. I have removed the rear panels from my cabinet and drilled holes in internal dividers as I have a 7 channel power amp in the middle of it and wanted to create as much airflow as possible but I hadn't really considered the xbox. I have no idea what the new internal power supply is like and I dare say (or hope!) they will be using one that doesn't create as much heat as the external bricks do but that extra airspace around the casing would be handy.

I got a rather decent sized high end AV unit that cost a big chunk of dough a few years ago and as you can see from the pic of it above, at this moment in time it's housing my Sky box, my Arcam Solo, my Wii U and my Xbox 360.

Obviously the Sky box and hi-fi are permanently there but my various consoles are always playing musical chairs but the fact both these consoles have power bricks don't actually come in to play because even if it was both my PS3 and PS4 I would never have more than four devices on there at once.

Any more than four is just not tidy, and by 'tidy' I obviously include the need for there to be plenty of airflow round each device as has been mentioned. Horses for courses and all that but if I was not already the owner of an Xbone I would not even consider the chunky older model, the new sleeker S is the only way to go!

I took the glass doored cabinet route for my most recent set up. I have a 5 piece Arcam set up on an open shelved stand which looks great but the contents of my new cabinet are a bit mix and match so the smoked glass doors go some way to hide that. It was also a lot cheaper than a decent glass shelved open av unit!

As far as the power brick/smaller console goes, if I were swapping over consoles on a regular basis I too would welcome the new version so point taken on that front but mine will be put in place and hopefully never moved for the next 5 years!

You can say that about anything:-
- I would rather have an external drive
- I would rather have the bluray drive externally
-- Just in case it breaks down

I would rather not have a computer chair than raises and lowers instead i'll have a wooden kitchen chair just in case it breaks down.

Some spiral wrap should sort those cables out.

Well you can hardly hide anything with an open AV unit, cheap n nasty Ikea or MFI plywood efforts with cardboard backs blocking air circulating ain't for me.

You see until every device runs on wireless power, wireless connectors from source to display, wireless aerial/coax etc you can't do anything about the mass of cables. Please don't forget that quailty leads/connections including 30 quid a metre speaker cable don't come in stick insect thin density either :wink: oh and do bear in mind there's also not much scope for 'cable tidy' measures when you employ a degree of domestic hygiene wanting to get around/behind/underneath your rig to give it a wee clean :smirk:

Last but by no means least the size of my rig is the right size for my 50 inch TV. I can only come to the conclusion you must have a ridiculously large telly which will have cost you grands for it not to look small on your sideboard, sorry cabinet with rear panels :smirk:
