Apart from using this abroad, can someone tell me why anything is better than a basic bt deal, in order to be able to use the unlimited wifi/fon which comes with bt broadband deals, home or mobile ?
Isn't it worth five or ten pounds every month (depending on the exact deal) for unlimited uk wifi ? I don't really make paid calls or send texts and so am only ever interested in the internet aspect.

26 Aug 162#17
It may not work in all dual sim phones because many can only have one 3g sim operational at once. As 3 don't have a 2g network then it won't work unless you can switch your other sim over to 2g.
I've found on my moto g dual sim that if I set the phone to use data on the 3 sim, then it all works, and calls etc come in on the other sim. However as soon as you switch to data on the other sim then the 3 sim stops working, as it can't connect to 2g.

This has been a live saver, purchased this before going to Paris a couple of weeks ago. Used in a WIFI dongle, I had to unlock the dongle but found a cheap ebay seller for £1 and got that done. Unlocked the WIFI dongle, enabled roaming options on the dongle and used out in Paris. And got 5 people connecting to it freely. Put the dongle in my backpack and people around me used it.
Used my phone and other phones connected to this hotspot and we used the data quite easily. If we used roaming data it would have cost me easily £16 alone.
As per gib;
Get unlimited calls and texts plus 500MB of data whilst abroad in our Europe Zone for £4 a day (inclusive of VAT where applicable).
Some days I used more than 500MB and it would have costed me additionally £3 per 75mb.
Its a good purchase especially going aboard.

26 Aug 161#34
Data is data; whether emanating from the phone's browser, or a PC via the phone's WiFi hotspot.
Beyond being less reliant upon battery, MiFi is an utterly pointless device that's duplicating functionality present in every modestly capable phone.
It's only £pple that tried to differentiate and premium-ize such a fundamental feature.
BrianM

I have a MiFi and in no way is it "utterly pointless"!!! For anything except very brief use I would rather use a dedicated box with a battery life of 6 hours or so - rather than run down the phone All iPhones do WiFi hot-spots just fine so I have no idea what you mean!

These are great for basic whatsapp and web browsing when abroad but be aware that streaming TV/Youtube or any bandwidth intensive task is not happening abroad as Three throttle it heavily. although I generally tether, having cellular in the iPad is handy, but i can't justify the prices with any other network because my usage is so low
a little tip for anyone who does put it in the iPad and doesn't want to rinse through the data (because you can use the entire 12gb in a day on netflix), turn cellular data off for any app you only want to use through wifi and preserve your 12gb/make it last a year. for example I've turned off iplayer, spotify, netflix, youtube. Prior to this, sometimes I *thought* I was connected to wifi/hotspot but wasn't, and my usage took quite a dent

Have you tethered using this sim in Spain on a phone or mifi?
Donnie
26 Aug 16#70
That's a bit of a dopey comment.
Even if you could buy a phone for £10 to £20, there are many reasons why you wouldn't use your phone to create a Hotspot for a prolonged amount of time. Apart from the very fact that you may need to use the thing elsewhere, whilst someone else needs a connection at home. So then you would need two sources of Internet.
I have one set up for sharing in an apartment in Spain.
Broaden your mind.
UncleStan
26 Aug 16#71
Donnie please do elaborate how are you using this to share from within Spain do you use a phone mifi etc...?
paulandpam1
26 Aug 16#72
Yes , my daughter borrowed the sim a few weeks ago and used it without problems in my Alcatel Y800 mifi device in Fuerteventura which is part of Spain so covered by the feel at home scheme.
A few months ago in the same place I tried a normal Three 3-2-1 phone sim in my mifi device and instantly got the 'you are not allowed message' from the first web page I tried.
UncleStan
26 Aug 161#73
Maybe valid! I have read that if these data sims are used for two months abroad within 1 year without a break in a non feel at home country then Three could cut you off. Although no reports actually confirm this has been done.
paulandpam1
26 Aug 16#74
You are almost correct, the two month rule applies to 'feel at home' countries.
These sims will simply not work in non feel at home countries and if you try to use it you get a polite webpage asking you to top up at an extortionate rate per mb.
There are plenty of expats who have been cut off in feel at home countries, also if you plan on using it abroad make sure you first use it here in the UK as they must be activated first here by the network.
UncleStan
26 Aug 16#75
Thanks for getting back to me on that it's a bit worrying to know that three will actually deactivate the sim after 2 months of continued use abroad.
I have ordered 2 data sims in the hope it would last me a year just taking it steady messaging etc... However if I'm going to get cut off I will just have to hammer it instead:-)
Also brought a Huawei E585 Mifi (£8 from fleabay) which in hindsight I now regret, as apparently Three will block this from tethering abroad as the device no: will be on their blacklist.
Still unsure if in fact I am able to tether on a unlocked non three branded mifi in a feel at home country.

I've found on my moto g dual sim that if I set the phone to use data on the 3 sim, then it all works, and calls etc come in on the other sim. However as soon as you switch to data on the other sim then the 3 sim stops working, as it can't connect to 2g.
This is a data card. You cannot make normal calls or send texts with this sim. It can receive calls or texts. You can make whatsapp calls and messages with it.
I have a dual sim phone and use this as the data card and use a talkmobile sim as my calls/ messages card.
I can tether with this.
Others use this abroad for data roaming although I haven't.
Just pop it in and it works, no messing.
Three sim sizes come in pack so will fit any phone/ tablet/ dongle.
It is 24gig for up to 12 months from activation. You can use it all in a few months or use a little and then loads another time. It is not a monthly allowance. When it runs out get another one. If you go to three.co.uk website when using it it will give you how much is left on card.
I'm planning to make this my main SIM, as I almost never use calls.
Used my phone and other phones connected to this hotspot and we used the data quite easily. If we used roaming data it would have cost me easily £16 alone.
As per gib;
Get unlimited calls and texts plus 500MB of data whilst abroad in our Europe Zone for £4 a day (inclusive of VAT where applicable).
Some days I used more than 500MB and it would have costed me additionally £3 per 75mb.
Its a good purchase especially going aboard.
thanks in advance :-)
I stand to be corrected!
I spent a month in the USA using this method.
Beyond being less reliant upon battery, MiFi is an utterly pointless device that's duplicating functionality present in every modestly capable phone.
It's only £pple that tried to differentiate and premium-ize such a fundamental feature.
All iPhones do WiFi hot-spots just fine so I have no idea what you mean!
I've not tried WhatApps calls.
although I generally tether, having cellular in the iPad is handy, but i can't justify the prices with any other network because my usage is so low
a little tip for anyone who does put it in the iPad and doesn't want to rinse through the data (because you can use the entire 12gb in a day on netflix), turn cellular data off for any app you only want to use through wifi and preserve your 12gb/make it last a year. for example I've turned off iplayer, spotify, netflix, youtube. Prior to this, sometimes I *thought* I was connected to wifi/hotspot but wasn't, and my usage took quite a dent
I hardly ever use calls and texts but if this sim allows incoming calls and texts then it would be ideal for me. plus i would be able to retain my number that i've held for years.
Has anyone tried to retain their existing number using a PAC code with this similar sim? thank you
These DATA sims are designed for tablets & mifi devices, I'm using one now in my Nexus 9 LTE and have been doing so for about 4 months both here and in Spain.
A few months ago in the same place I tried a normal Three 3-2-1 phone sim in my mifi device and instantly got the 'you are not allowed message' from the first web page I tried.
Anybody??
Personal hotspot on android phones works fine with three abroad.
And here is the Price Guide for mobile broadband:
http://www.three.co.uk/_standalone/Link_Document?content_aid=1214305748126
On page 7 it shows the 1p 2p 3p rate for data, text and calls.
It will not let me tether though. Last year it did but not any more.
Internet speed near rome using this is generally H+ or occasionally 3g
Three FLH
I am using this SIM in a dual SIM Moto G 2016 model and it is working perfectly both at home and in France and Spain. It even receives calls and texts.
Connects to network but cannot use any data :disappointed:
Ta!
Kevin
Price is cheaper and more Feel at Home countries now too...
I'm not sure how that matches up with the rates described on their website. Three sucks.
