I've been looking for a new tablet to replace a Nexus 7 2013 missing out on the cheap Nexus 9 & Z4 deals
I've been watching this & it's now £199 instead of £249 @ Argos

Thanks to the OP for posting this, just picked up mine yesterday morning. after I hit 'pay' I felt buyers remorse kick in, but after opening the box and using it for most of this weekend, don't regret my purchase one bit.
loads of updates to get to Marshmallow, but it runs like a beast now. slapped the new nexus launcher on it to, looks slick. Also tested out screen mirroring with my Roku and it worked fast and watched an entire movie to.
Bluetooth and other connections work flawlessly, screen is great. Did some editing on Lightroom and Snapseed, definitely better to edit on than my Nexus 6P. Sometimes I transfer pics from my DSLR for quick edits to send to friends and this will probably be my companion on the days I'm out shooting with friends.
Only thing bad on this is the keyboard switching to Google Keyboard or swiftkey is highly recommended!!
Overall great tablet - worth the money.

Better and cheaper to get Nvidia K1 tablet, if you can find stock for RRP.

Does anyone know where I can get the official black cover? I have only been able to find what I think is the official white one, and at quite a price - over £30! What is the advantage of it? It doesn't even say that it's leather....

Best android tablet on the market, had the original z tablet still going strong, also have a z2 excellent hardware and almost stock android experience, had the z3 tablet last Xmas brought for my little one he's constantly on it never crashes, just performs had to buy 64gb sd card has internal memory is full. At this price it's a steel, I paid £250.

you'll be ok. its up to developers to support older versions of Android, but generally if an app doesn't support a version of Android less than 4-5 years old, it's probably not a well used app.

Z1 has only just been released from the update programme this year and that's well over 2 years old.

12 Aug 16#75
Support will probably stop next year so you'll get N n possibly O but it's a fantastic tablet, light yet feels premium and waterproof which is great. Screen quality whilst lacking resolution is superb and has hardware support for HiRes music - I have the LTE version and it's been a great workhorse, the only thing you can really knock it for is 16gb base storage is too small these days and Sony's software starts nagging at 75% full but other than that mines been great.

MrPuddington
12 Aug 161#67
The official line is 18 months after launch, although even that is never guaranteed. Sony has been quite good about this, and some have received major upgrades for 2 years. Anyway, the 2 years are up soon, I would expect updates to stop in the near future. This tablet will not most likely never see Android 7.

I bought this when it was first launched along with the official leather case, I have to say both are fantastic. My daughter often steals it to watch Netflix in the bath, it's all round winner.

In the market for a decent 8 incher.
This, or the Asus Z580c, or the Nvidia Shield K1?
Sony and Asus seem to score better on build quality but the shield seems to blow everything out the water speed and spec wise.....and it's the cheapest.....

I am not sure how frequently sony updates software, it is not same as LG or Samsung. I have Z3 dual they have rolled out Android 6 in every part of the world except Europe. Also, terrible customer service by Sony.
I hope tablets should not suffer the same fate. though, you can get root it.

sony make great tabs. The Z series are brill.....I have the z tab and suits my needs so well! shame it's not being updated....got mine brand new from argos ebay last year for a superb price (£186). I do like the z3, but prefer the bigger screen of my z tab.....if the z2 or z4 ever drop in price to something like this deal then I would be all over them. Thanks for posting and heated up

Great tablet, I got one in John Lewis cheap (a return) about a year or more ago.
I do have an ipad air, but hardly use it since I got this. Great size, and light, front facing speakers, battery almost as good as the ipad, on Marshmallow, ps4 'compatibile', takes Sd cards, etc.
However I hav noticed recently that I think it is starting to occasionally 'slow' when browsing etc. I do use Cleanmaster to wipe the cache, etc, but does still drag a little sometimes. This is rare, but noticeable to me.
I would still recommend it though, and this is a good price for a new one.

It's cheaper to get a K1 but it's not better.
Used both and the Z3 is just clearly better for most applications. Gaming is the only one where the K1 beats it but even then, it's not a huge difference.
Not to mention it's a lot lighter, thinner and waterproof. Battery life is probably the best I've ever seen on a tablet too.

the z3 recently got a big update but to be fair they took their time with it.
I had the Nexus 7 before the z3, I loved the Nexus 7 but the z3 is so much better in many ways. grab yourself a cheap magnetic charging dock too. I got the official sony case free with mine which is top quality but a bit expensive to buy I think.

Officially supports remote play with ps4 too. Although that can also be done with the modded apk on the Nvidia Shield, which I think is the best tablet you can get for £150 (due to unpredictable support from Sony). Heat added for price, hardware & brand

Great tab, but is there any news on the long term support? Since Sony decided to discontinue the Z series (imho best Android tablet available at the moment), will they also stop updates at some point? And what is the future for Android tablets? And does it have 4G?

loads of updates to get to Marshmallow, but it runs like a beast now. slapped the new nexus launcher on it to, looks slick. Also tested out screen mirroring with my Roku and it worked fast and watched an entire movie to.
Bluetooth and other connections work flawlessly, screen is great. Did some editing on Lightroom and Snapseed, definitely better to edit on than my Nexus 6P.
