A classic, trusted design, with a heavy duty metal frame and 32 built-in stitches
With automatic needle threader and fully automatic 1-step buttonhole function
Simple stitch selection wheel, adjustable stitch length and width
Model: 2282
Bought one for the other half to take to sewing classes. Was returned on teachers advice as the previous years class had bought loads, and half of them broke before the course finished. The Lidl model is a budget Indian machine. Suppose its alright for light use. Janome probably a better bet.

Singer, really? Not a Silvercrest

Better if it were - Singer's a name best avoided these days. Quality machines once (a very long time ago) but the last proper Singer was made getting on for 50 years ago. Now it's just a name stuck on cheap imports to con people.

You will find the machine under multiple brands as Singer is not a sewing machine manufacturer any more it is brand owned by a company that licences it to be put on sewing related products.

Any particular models that the teacher recommended? TIA.

On checking, she recommended the Janome 2015a or 2060 as a budget/learner machine, or the 603 for someone who`s going to be serious about sewing (but 3x this price).
I bought the 603, and its been sat in a cupboard since she finished the course :-(

Janome is surely the best. but at this price point this is probably a good one. or john lewis' own brand is highly spoken on as well roughly 90£

school class replaced all 'reliable' janomes with John Lewis, had few issues in the 2 years they've been through heavy use, with the plan being easier to simply replace whole machine than have a part replaced on a better brand

Brother are a really good make as well, it's all down to personal preference. I love brothers and have had one last 15 years but recently upgraded as I now require more from my machine. I would suggest going to local retailers (independents are better as they won't push you into a wrong decision) and have a go at using the machines. Any decent retailer will let you do this and will actually point out different features on the machine. One good thing to look for buttonhole use just one step is better than 2 step
