What an amazing time we live in when we can buy a GPU with a similar performance as a 2 year old GPU (970) for about the same cost!

You can overclock a 970 to match 1060 performance. But it's a piece of cake to overclock 1060 too and there, 970 can't keep up. Plus you get an extra two gigs of RAM.
Oh yeah, and the value of UK money has collapsed in the meantime. The real comparison here is in USD, where GTX 970 launched at $330 and GTX 1060 is $249 with extra performance and more RAM.

So much fail in this thread.

No its not brexit either, its nvidia being greedier than ever and due to amd failing again.
The 1070 should be 270-300 max.
Vote with your wallet and dont pay it thats the only way to change these stupid prices. Look at all them early titan buyers, they hate themselves now the 780 beat the first titan ffs lol...

I'm sure there's others else where. But it all depends on what you want/what's important to you. Some buy for looks, some buy for warranty, some buy for clock speeds, others are brand loyal. What's your poison ?
catbeans
13 Aug 16#7
Clock speeds are all the same, its just a silicon lottery, buying a pre 'OC' card this generation over the same version but stock is meh, due to GPU boost and the way the cards clock anyway etc. Even coolers come down to a few degrees difference between coolers (stock fan curves) and fans are pretty much all quiet on the 10 series cards.
1060 its pretty much do you want a small or a big cooler.

Whats the advantage to getting highly binned AIBs with either the rx480 or gtx 1060, will it give you better chance of OCing or not?
catbeans
14 Aug 161#9
Honestly I can't tell you, you would have to find out the specific criteria the companies are binning on and what companies are doing binning. Usually achieving the clock they want, whilst fulfilling the tempature and voltage targets. So you are more likely to get a better OC from a binned chip I suppose in that sense.
You are better looking for first hand experiences with the exact model you want. All i can say is I have a Palit Game Rock 1070 and I have clocked it past the GameRock Premium Edition without effort, Though maybe I am lucky.

Should I buy rx 480 or gtx 1060?
Easy2BCheesy to JhonSeb0810
14 Aug 161#11
GTX 1060 is generally faster in DX11, RX 480 is generally the same or faster in DX12 (just don't mention Tomb Raider).
Depends on the games you play. Reviews generally favour 1060 for dx11 games and older and 480 for DX12 games and vulcan

If Vulkan doesn't pick up and 1060 is cheaper then just buy it.

I got my 970 for under £250 new 2 years ago, is it really too much to expect the latest GPU's to be quite a bit faster than a 2 year old GPU? So it's got more ram, big deal, I play Doom @ 1080p and it looks amazing, can't see how a extra 2GB on cards at this level (1080p) will make that much difference.
Personally If I upgrade I wouldn't go lower than a 1070 and wouldn't pay more than £350 and I'd only do that if I could get a 1440p GSync IPS monitor with no quality control issues for under £500 (which I can't!)
Looks like I'll be keeping my 970 and gaming at 1080p for a while longer!
Danze1984
14 Aug 16#25
Can't speak for any of the other cards, but the G1 version runs GTA V on max settings @ 1440 no problem. Not even attempted to overclock it yet either, and it's silent. Such a massive upgrade from my overclocked 960 SSC.

Great price, it's with the extra money and time to get the 1070 though, it will have serious performance gains over the 1060.

I prefer the 1060 to the 480, esp for htpc use. Lower power, less heat and supports moonlight streaming to my android phone / 3d headset via trinus. It's crap on AMD due to lag.

There is no real xx70 tier card anymore. The 1070 is that in name only. The price never reflected the xx70 slot in the lineup. Look at the huge price gap between the 1060 and 1070.

IRONICALLY us PC gamers will quite happily spend 230 quid on a graphics card just to play a small selection of games. I want to upgrade just for BF1, I could get a console for that price and play dozens of games. Damn you PC master race, membership is not cheap.

Depends what you consider a direct replacement. Nvidia always said the 1070 would be £50 more than the 970 so there's no direct replacement as far as price point goes but there is in terms of their line up and branding.

14 Aug 16#47
I've been using SLI for years, you just need to go into it with your eyes open and don't expect perfect scaling. Scaling is generally better at higher resolutions but if the GPUs are sitting there underutilised it's often because of a CPU bottleneck. In those cases you just need to tweak the settings, like enable a higher level of AA or use supersampling, as that shifts the load back onto the GPU.
catbeans
14 Aug 16#49
Yes, yes, you are smarter than 52% of the population congratulations , you are a genius play boy millionaire no doubt.
The 1070 is the replacement for the 970, it fits the 70 slot exactly compared to the 80.
The 970 launhed for ~$330, the MSRP of the 1070 is $370, considering inflation and the massive power increase between the 970 and 1070 its perfectly reasonable. Never before has a 70 card come out that has trashed the previous generations flagship.. No I dont mean the 980ti, I'm talking Titan. So actually its amazing value for money.
The super inflated prices at the moment are just that l, super inflated. If people want a 1070 but aren't willing to pay the premium, they need to wait till there is no longer a shortage of chips and everyone who will pay a premium has. That's life.

I agree with most of that. nVidia are only doing this crap because people allow them to. it's ridiculous releasing a Titan only for it to be trashed by a "mid range" card a year later and losing 80% of its value.
I think AMD did not fail. it's just people look at the benchmarks of now and don't think for the future of dx12 and Vulkan. just look at AMDs past cards. The fact is that AMD cards last a lot longer than nvidia cards. They are built for the future.
