The innovative design, of this 42 litre bin from the Morphy Richards, features a clever sensor operated lid which automatically opens when you are throwing out the trash and closes once you have walked away, making your life easier.
The batteries don't last , It opens when you don't want it to if you walk near it and it's a nightmare to empty if the bin bag is full . Otherwise it truly is wonderful :smirk:

You're missing the point,it hasn't stopped working, but if you have it situated where people walk past it,it opens 30 times a day so the batteries don't last.

Experience? It's a kitchen bin ! If stops working take it back to Argos - there returns policy is around a year anyway

It's a bin with a sensor - if you think it's a a 'waste' :-) of time then don't buy it, it's like getting upset about a particular TV program - either don't watch it or turn over ... Duh !

You need threads like these with peoples experiences of the actual product, it helps others with the pros and cons of it.

OK, as for the being overly-sensitive and draining batteries, it sounds defective. I believe in the booklet that comes with it, it say it's been tested to provide a battery life of 3 months, opening and closing 20x per day. If you're using alkaline batteries, it sounds like you got a lemon.
'The batteries can last 3-6 months based on the bin lid opening and closing 20 times a day. High alkaline batteries can last up to 2 years on standby only' http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/Pdf/IB971511.pdf

I've had it where there's been bulky items at the bottom and the bin bag kind of gets stuck so you have to wiggle it around to pull it out
Also it obviously depends where you put it as to whether it goes off or not as I'm the same, there's nowhere really in my kitchen to place it where you don't walk past it and set it off.

I agree but have we really all become so lazy we can't open and close our own bins. Waste of money these.

Never had it open when I don't want it to - it only opens when within 10-15cm of sensor.
I don't know what you're filling it with, but I've never over-filled a bag or had problems removing one. Do you recycle?

That's not pedantic that's describing what I do ,the same applies when I go to the outside bin,but a lot of people don't bother washing their hands after touching bins.

Got one a couple of weeks ago, it does open when your near it no big deal as closes in about 5 seconds. Has a easy to press power button to keep open for when your scrapping plates, etc.
Only downside is no inner bin liner so best to have some newspaper in the bottom in case bag leaks.
Big plus point is 5 Year warranty included when you register on Morphy Richards site.

It not really just open close bin though is it? it's more: open bin, close bin, run tap, wait for hot water, wash hands, dry hands; after all that you get to resume whatever it was you were doing. Of course I'm being deliberately pedantic here but still...
I think the idea behind this bin is sound it's just a shame the execution doesn't seem to be up to scratch.

Bought one months ago, sensor works great, I love it. Only have to touch the bin every few days to empty it. Heat!

Ours lasted about 6 months before it gave up completely, id lost the receipt so no chance of a swap, I now have a dumb bin which somehow seems to work better,
