I got one recently and am very happy with it, I think a lot of the bad reviews are from when it first came out and had a few problems which have been fixed with updates.
I'd say go for it if you can afford one.

Sorry for such a late reply. Never got an notification and only just came across your comment now. I bought mine in store. No it wasn't in stock, they only had that £849 in store. They had to order it for me and which took them 10 days to receive it into their store. Then I had to collect it myself when it was ready for pick up. Sadly they wouldn't do free delivery unless you buy it online.

Im afraid that you have been misquoted. In the terms and conditions it states: 'This offer is open to employees of Dixons Carphone and may be used in conjunction with colleague discount but not with any other offer.'

The CS of Currys is really poor, so I doubt anything they say can be trusted.

Hi Currys,

I would like to enquire about the offer on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/microsoft-surface-pro-4-128-gb-10139733-pdt.html

If I use the studentbeans 10% discount to buy the tablet, can I also still claim the Curry's 10% discount aswell [completed by online form]?

Kind regards,

Fair enough, but that all sounds a bit superflous? most of that isn't basic note taking really is it?

When i want to make notes, i don't care about any of that. Just want to jot something down and find it again later.

29 Aug 16 #297
Handwriting is just better, you have to try it and compare it, the zoom function just works so simply. PDF Annotation and integration with Dropbox. The word processing tools are excellent. Synchronised cloud backup, organisation and sharing of material. Linked Audio recording where you can tap a word to hear your linked audio recording. They seem to have thought of everything. The workflow is just brilliant. There's always exceptions but I can't see anything on the Windows platform that is as complete for note taking.

TL;DR

I gave my opinion why the iPad Pro is better for ONE thing which is note taking, the Surface Pro 4 is better at a lot of other things.
jayjayuk1234

Fair enough, but please answer the original question  - i cannot be bothered to follow links into other threads, particularly when it's just other peoples opinions. we wanted your opinion :P

Yes I can read, you said: And I asked how is it better. I never insinuated you claimed the iPad was better at everything, I made a question in direct response to your statement. You've then responded as though I asked a completely different question with your knickers in a twist

I'm honestly curious what makes notability a better solution than all the Windows available options especially given how well they integrate within the full productive OS.

I've just been wondering why I still haven't received my welcome email and the code for Adobe and checking on the website for Microsoft it states warranty:

Under warranty until: 08/06/2017

Have I bought a returned product as that warranty is short? - Is it displayed in the American form at 6th of August or is it actually 8th of June?

Either date means it's under 12 months warranty and I'm guessing this is why I haven't received a welcome code as it's already been registered?
fishmaster
29 Aug 16 #289
I think you're still referring just to notetaking, to make it clear I did NOT say the iPad Pro is better than the Surface 4 for everything. I said it was better for ONE specific thing which is note taking, which I've already given details of and am not going to repeat myself. (Notability http://gingerlabs.com/)

Posts #24 and #25 on this thread explain it better than I can >

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/apple-ipad-pro-9-7-128gb-wi-fi-with-3-year-warranty-579-john-lewis-2499755

I actually think Apple should have put a full OS with a proper file manager on the iPad Pro, the Surface Pro series all have full Windows OS's even the failed Windows RT. It should be obvious that an iPad Pro can't compete on many areas with the Surface Pro 4.
BigYoSpeck
29 Aug 16 #288
I'm interested to know the facts why the iPad is better rather than just your conjecture.

Windows has Onenote, Plumbago, the Edge browser, Xodo, Sticky Notes, Screen Sketch to name a few. What is it that's available on the iPad that's better and why?
fishmaster
29 Aug 16 #287
It's not just about the hardware, it's about the software. Do some research on Notability and then come back to me and tell me whose using a Galaxy Note over an iPad Pro for note taking if they have the choice of both platforms. That's what I was specifically talking about. The Surface may be the better platform for drawing on, I don't know as I'm useless at drawing.

29 Aug 16 2 #286
Oh don't be so ridiculous, if you'd needed to take notes professionally you'll well know that the iPad Pro is the better option over the Surface.

Samsung Note 8 or 10.1. Its integrated into the design of the hardware and software, when you unsheath the stylus it can auto open a note app. Also you dont ever have to worry about the pen running out of battery. Ive been real unimpressed with both Apple and MS stylus integration.

I got this deal a week ago, Adobe offer received after 72hours via email as already stated "welcome to surface pro " it's really is a great bit of kit, the screen is amazing. I use it mainly for editing photos and regular stuff like web browsing etc. Already had office 365 which runs perfectly. I did pop in a 200gb micro sd card for added memory and use this for automatically adding new music, photos, videos etc directly onto. I would highly recommend the Surface Pro 4

That was something that was important to me too.

The first thing I did was record a video and then edit it on the Surface Pro 4 to see how it performed. You can see the outcome at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ2GrujK65U

In short, it's ok, but not great. The resolution is great for editing. I have the i7 with the iris graphics card and 16gb of RAM. I assumed it would breeze through video editing, however I found playback is a little jerky at times. I believe this is because Adobe Premiere Pro CC uses the CPU and not the graphics card. The i7 has two cores, which is why the quad core i5 in my 2009 iMac handles editing better.

Mine came in 4 days. Look for an email titled "Welcome to Surface Pro 4".

As someone who has owned both (the 12.9" iPad Pro), I disagree. The Apple Pencil may be better for drawing, but it leaves a lot to be desired for notetaking. The fiddly cap and charging method is ludicrous and Notability lacks a decent desktop app for syncing between devices. As a digital notepad to carry around, there's also nowhere to store the Pencil. The interchangeable tips on the Surface Pen and built-in eraser are great for handwriting and, as an overall package, it offers much more than the iPad Pro which simply can't be anything more than a very expensive companion device to a laptop/desktop.

2 different animals.

The Sony Z-Range is purely firing on the Android OS, whereas this Microsoft Tablet, is yes, firing on the Windows OS instead?.

So both the hardware and/or software configurations will be a little different to reflect such .....

So the choice basically comes down to which OS you'd now refer? (more so than anything ..... ). :-)

I disagree with this. I have no need for the pen, however I do like having such a light versatile device that can be used as a tablet or a laptop.

One size does not fit all. What works for me may not work for you and vice-versa.

I love my Surface and I doubt I will ever regularly use the stylus. It still offers a huge amount of functionality regardless of the pen.

How am I supposed to take notes and mark up PDFs with a "light high end laptop"? How am I supposed to quickly sketch a diagram to show to a client? If I'm an artist, how am I supposed to draw or paint digitally without plugging in a Wacom?

How is a laptop "better suited for the job"? What job are you talking about? It's none of the examples above.

People are STILL missing the point of this. It's all about the PEN, people. If you need it, it's unbeatable. From OneNote to full Photoshop and Illustrator CC, NOTHING comes close - including the crippled iPad Pro. The fact that it can be used as a laptop or tablet (or even docked as a desktop) is a huge bonus. But if you don't need the pen, you don't need the Surface. For those of us who do, it's just fantastic and worth every penny.

I bought a Surface Pro 3 (brand new) on eBay a few months ago: 256Gb, i7, 8Gb RAM. Paid £850.

I am a power iPad user. My iPad Air 2 is constantly by my side, constantly in use. (I also have iPad Pro). However, I also need a portable Windows machine (for legacy programmes, etc).

The SP3 took a little getting used to. W10 is obviously far more complex than IOS. Windows also requires a fine navigation tool since many of the icons are a little too small to touch with speed and precision. So you will need the support of the pen or a mouse.

That said, as long as you are aware that the SP4 is not a full-blooded tablet (not quite as nimble, not as intuitive, not as intimate), I don't think you'll be disappointed in it. It has certainly revived my faith in Microsoft (not entirely! since I don't like the policy of gathering and selling your data).

So, in short, whether your a Windows fan, an Android fanboy, or an Apple fanboy, I would endorse the recommendations.....
Pipedream
29 Aug 16 #261
I would very much recommend getting the cheaper fanless M3 over an i5. I have an i5 and the fan is annoying as **** and really its still not powerful enough for most things to take advantage of the i5 so M3 is, imo, the way to go.

I refused to buy the tablet as a result as 10% student beans 10% currys discount tesco points via giftcard purchase all seem like a good discount but the cost of they keyboard ontop without a tradein of at least £150 is still not tempting enough.

27 Aug 16 1 #258
They test Laptop trade in's with some software in store. But the general rule is that an i7 laptop will get you £200, and an i5 will get you £125. Laptops should be less than 5 years old and in good condition. I exchanged an i7 (with had 8gb RAM and a 250ssd) and an i5 Surface Pro 1 laptop and got £325 off for Surface Pro 4. They will test it with software to give you an evaluation. My Laptops were in immaculate condition.
You can exchange up to 3 laptops, I believe. Please confirm by checking instore.
This one only has 4gb RAM and a 128gb ssd. But it is a laptop AND tablet. I have added a 128 micro sd card for disk space while using the main 128 gb ssd for programs. I am very happy with mine. Please bear in mind that Windows apps are not as varied as Android or IOS ones when making your decision.

Yep that's what I meant, announcing it in October for next year. All major review companies, along with lots of buyers, are upset that you need to spend over £100 for a keyboard and that it should be standard for this price tag. I agree and with Christmas around the corner, it would be wise for Microsoft to have a good bundle as we all know Apple will do so.

Competition leads to better options for customers like us so ill wait out 1-2 months and save a bit more overall.

Just my £0.02 though so shame on me if I'm wrong and miss out lol

I can't see it. 12 months between refreshes is pretty short. The rumour is a Surface all-in-one (iMac rival) is coming in October, with three new Surface devices in Spring 2017. These are likely to be the Pro 5, non-Pro Surface 4 and Surface Book 2.

It is. The SP4 Type Cover is significantly nicer to type on with better key spacing - the trackpad is also larger and more responsive in my experience.

There's little reason to use the SP4 pen on the SP3, however. The extra pressure sensitivity won't work (restricted by SP3 screen) and the magnet doesn't attach to the SP3.
MA3STRO
23 Aug 16 #234
I actually considered the opposite from you and considered buying a second hand Surface Pro 3 with i7 matched with a newer Surface Pro 4 type cover and stylus. Most reviews say that the Surface Pro 4 keyboard is much better and worth the upgrade.

Good to hear that Microsoft has a good policy on returns.

I looked at the Spectre X2. It's a stunning piece of tech. I was put off by some of the horror stories regarding customer service, though - HP are notorious for this and you can end up without a device for weeks when it's away for repair. Microsoft appear to have taken a 'no questions asked' approach to customer service like Apple.

The Type Cover is overpriced but I've also used the £139 iPad Pro Smart Keyboard and that thing is an absolute disgrace. Total junk. Makes MS's offering look like a steal.

An alternative is an SP3 cover instead - Argos currently have the black for £59.99 (if you can find one): http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3314621.htm
MA3STRO
23 Aug 16 #232
I would have been happy with a little bit of weight being added to it. I read a review recently about a similar hybrid (can't recall if it was Lenovo) and the keyboard could be used via bluetooth. That shows it can be done. It's a good idea as it would let you place the screen away from you.

To me it looks like a cost saving measure on Microsoft's part. Many other companies are including the keyboard free of charge whilst Microsoft are charging around £100. And rival devices are already cheaper than the Surface Pro range.

There are a few alternatives to the Surface Pro 4. The HP Spectre X2 is probably the one with the best reviews.

At the moment the Surface Pro 4 has been getting the best reviews but in a year I reckon the market is going to be more competitive so Microsoft may have to step up their game a little bit when it comes to pricing.

I am really pleased with my purchase but I have no allegience to any company so in the future we should see prices on these computers coming way down.
Interloper
23 Aug 16 #231
That's the either/or scenario though. I'm guessing Microsoft decided against being able to use the Type Cover wirelessly as that would have involved putting a battery in it to power the Bluetooth. That adds both weight and thickness and I'm guessing they wanted to keep it slim and light without sacrificing key travel.

Almost all the third party options for both the Surface and iPad Pro operate over Bluetooth. This was probably to avoid having to pay the licencing fees for the connectors.

That is the one feature missing from the official type cover. I would love for it to be able to work via bluetooth while disconnected.

Main downside to this one is that you need to charge it separately whilst the official one draws power from the Surface Pro 4. You're right about the USA reviews being kinder. For the price it could be worth a punt.

There's a half decent looking backlit keyboard cover here for £28:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01AJOX7LU

Some ropey reviews but the Amazon US ones seem a bit more balanced. It's Bluetooth still, but that means you can use it while seperated from the Surface. Given Amazon's 30-day return policy it might be worth a shot.

No problem. I did a lot of research before buying the Surface Pro 4 and case so I'm happy to pay it forward. There are a lot of good bluetooth keyboards available but the type cover works perfectly with the Surface Pro 4. They really should include it in the price.

Thanks. Ideally, I'd like to get something before then, but I could always order a case and wrap the skin around it as well.

Thanks John.

Yeah that is just a default Windows wallpaper. I haven't changed any theme settings as yet.

I don't mind the lack of protection at the front as I would be using it with the official type cover. Check out the Griffin survivor case for the Surface Pro 4 if you want protection for the screen. That completely wraps around the device and has a plastic screen in front of the screen. It also covers the ports. Perhaps a little overkill however if you are looking for complete protection it might be what you are looking for.

You can see the Griffin case on Amazon at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-Survivor-Slim-Microsoft-Surface/dp/B0199T2HXA/

I got the red type cover keyboard from Amazon. I picked it up for £69.99 last week from Amazon but it appears to be selling at £89.99 now. The black version has went up from £89.99 to £97.70 too.

Check out CEX if you are looking to pick it up a little cheaper. They sell it second hand for around £70.

Well you receive 150 clubcard points for every £50 giftcard you purchase. 150 points is £1.50 in normal clubcard money but you can x4 for things like restraunt vouchers and days out.

To buy this you could buy £700 worth of £50 vouchers. 14 x 150 points = 2,100 points (£21 or x4 at £84)

You can do this instead of the 6% cashback from Topcashback which is £33.50. I'd personally rather have £84 in clubcard boost as I use them.

Nice. That looks very good. You mentioned it took a long time to arrive. Are we talking weeks or months?

Do you know if any UK companies stock them?

There's a few.

I don't like the UAG Urban Armor as it apparantly is very tight with the Surface and the kickstand makes a lot of noise. The Griffin survivor covers the ports so I wouldn't use that.

The STM bags Dux looks good. The Targus folio looks ok too.

A lighter alternative to consider is the Incipio Feather Advanced. Doesn't offer much protection but will protect against scratches etc.

You will need to buy the keyboard separately. I recommend buying it elsewhere as you will find it slightly cheaper.

I went into the store about this yesterday and the price was still £849. I asked them about it and why it was not £700 like this deal and they had to look it up online to see it being £699.

They are the same but the only difference between the two is that the one in store (£849) comes with 3 or 4 years of Microsoft Office 365 and then after that you have to pay £60 each year to keep going. My memory is a bit rusty right now due to being tired but I think he said we only get 1 year of it from this £700. The in store version also comes with the McAfee antivirus but this offer does not.

So was an obvious choice for me. I took this one as I didn't want that Office 365 or McAfee. But that's a choice for anyone that is interested.

Cool.

I might need to revisit the idea of a screen protector. I don't think it would be necessary with a case such as the Kensington, but if I opt for a lighter case it's something I will need to check out.

Some of the skins available at https://dbrand.com/shop/surface-pro-4 look really good. I've got a red type cover so a white and red skin combination could work well.
Interloper
22 Aug 16 1 #211
Really easy to apply once you know how - watch the video here: https://dbrand.com/skins/how-to-apply/surface-pro-4

The key is to secure one small section first. Once that's in place you can pull off the rest of the backing and it falls into place perfectly. (The Skinomi ones are more involved - they require wet application and can be a pain.)

I've put tempered glass and film screen protectors on these devices and a 12.9" iPad Pro numerous times without an issue - use the 'hinge' method and you're set: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/applying-a-glass-screen-protector-like-a-boss.94743/

I'm not too worried about dropping it as I'd never normally put a laptop in a case while using it. Also, flipping the kickstand out and holding the Surface with your fingers hooked under it when using it as a tablet is a really secure way to hold it.

The bigger issue for me is the magnesium back - it scratches easily. I had a Surface Pro 3 that got scratched up within a couple of days of owning it (grrr) after lightly putting it down on a dining table - a couple of stray salt grains must have caused the damage.

For that reason I now always apply a vinyl skin. DBrand do some nice ones that you can easily customise (including coverage for the metallic logo if you want) but they take an age to arrive from Canada. Skinomi make a decent all-body clear skin if you want to maintain the look of the device. Alternatively, there are some cheap carbon and metallic ones on eBay that work just fine. They also make the device more 'grippy' and less prone to a drop.
MA3STRO to Interloper
22 Aug 16 #209
I've looked at some reviews of those. They look good.

How difficult are they to apply? My concern was that I wouldn't put the skin on correctly. The same reason why I'll probably not buy a screen protector. It's hard enough putting tempered glass on a smartphone nevermind a tablet that is over 12 inches.
MA3STRO
22 Aug 16 #208
I think it gives the screen great protection due to the clasp round the back that holds the keyboard cover in place. Plus there is a fair amount of distance between the case and the surface.

I'm returning the case though as I found that the case stops me from using USB flash drives. Not a deal breaker for some people, but I didn't want any main ports to be blocked in that way; particularly as the surface pro only has one USB port.

The video will be online within an hour or so. I'll share it here. I'm going to order another soon.

22 Aug 16 #206
Thanks Ma3stro. Protection is necessary but I was also wondering if the most fragile part of the Surface - the screen - that isn't protected, is it?
Looking forward to your review.

MA3STRO
22 Aug 16 #205
Mmm depends on what you are looking for. It adds a lot of bulk and weight but it does offer a lot of protection.

I've only had it a few days so I'm still on the fence as to whether the added bulk is worth it for the protection. I'm tempted to try a lightweight case to see the difference; but I do feel the Surface is a bit too light and fragile on its own.

I'm published a review of it today on my YouTube channel so I'll share it later.

I was keen on the Asus transformer when it was first released but opted for an ipad at the time due to pricing. The transformer was certainly one of the best Android tablets when it came out. I was all set to buy it thou in Colombia, where I was living at the time, the transformer was actually the same price as the top of the range iPad 3. Yet in the UK the iPad 3 was hundreds of pounds more expensive. Due to that I got the iPad 3.

Well I had one of these for a bit and the thing that annoyed me most was the fact it was such a bad tablet. The app gap is huge, loads of apps just aren't there at all. Also ones that are there are poor imitations of the iOS/Android ones that are available (e.g. eBay, Plex, Amazon etc)

If you need a tablet for only a small proportion of the time and need to use it as a PC mostly then these are great machines. For those thinking to can replace an iPad then it can't.

I am currently using an iPad Pro with mouse and keyboard for work travel and removing into a desktop when I need to as I use tablet functionality quite a bit.

Things like fingerprint reader on the iPad to log into various apps and websites makes workflow a lot slicker for me. Windows Hello on the SP4 is pretty limited which is disappointing as nearly a year later it still can't be integrated into 3rd party apps.

Just be sure you know what you will be using it for, I've tried a Surface 3 and a Surface Pro 4 now but it just isn't there yet for me, don't get me wrong the idea of a single laptop/tablet device is very appealing I just don't it's been cracked yet.

The resale value on these seems quite low too, I bought a pristine 2nd hand i5/4GB with keyboard for 650 and couldn't get rid of it for love nor money. Ended up losing a hundred quid on it. (the good thing is the warranty travels with the device like Apple stuff) The Apple resale value is much higher. Not an issue if you plan on keeping it for quite a long time but something to bear in mind.

Does anyone bother getting the Care Plan or is that just a waste of money? If someone was to get a 2 year plan, does begin from the day you get the Surface Pro or does it begin after a year warranty (so on the second year)?

If you want full Adobe CC Suite on a full OS tablet with pressure sensitivity, your only option is the Surface Pro.

You must have a strange definition of new. The 12" Retina Macbook is an all-new design, and it launched just last year (2015).

The Macbook Air and Pro range have not been revised in quite a few years, although it's still a top notch design and the lack of progress from Intel on new CPU's means they aren't as dated as some people like to make out. There will be a new Pro range at some point this year though.

I think its better to buy a refurb Apple Macbook from 2015 (£759). Given it doesn't match the processor nor the ports (although a USB adapter is available) - i'd rather have a reliable machine + 8gb ram standard + 256gb hard drive.

For those will say its a different beast to the Surface tablet, by the time you add a keyboard you are in essence trying to make it into a laptop - this is where the Macbook comes in.

The iPad Pro is almost certainly the future of the portable Mac. Look at the current Mac lineup; it's completely neglected. When iPad sales drop low enough, they will fuse the 12" Macbook and iPad Pro lines; macOS will basically merge with iOS (although it will probably be more of a dumbing down of the former) and the Mac/iOS hybrid will be born. I can see them dropping the Macbook Air, Mac Mini and Mac Pro. We'll probably end up with a regular iPad, a Macbook/iPad Pro hybrid and the 5k iMacs.

As for this offer...I just pulled the trigger on the i5 version in-store. Managed to nab a mispriced Type Cover for £69 as well (which they reluctantly honoured). That works out as:

Regular price: i5 £849 + Type Cover £109 = £958
Offer price: i5 £699 + Type Cover £69 - Cashback £70 = £698
Saving of £260 - I'll take that.

Also, don't know if this has been mentioned but there is a free 12 month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud Photography also included, worth around £90 (Photoshop CC & Lightroom CC).

It took Jobs dying to get people a phone and tablet the size they wanted. They have a tendency to stubbornly refuse products that don't fit their current vision. The problem is a touch screen mac, especially done right as a 2-in-1 would destroy the ipad segment completely. They'll be crunching the numbers waiting until it hits the tipping point that enough extra macbook's will sell to make up for the loss of ipad sales.

I find it hard to comprehend that Apple still hasn't made a hybrid. They are being completely ignorant to what even a section of their own users are demanding. I have to disagree with the comment about the 12" Macbook keyboard being better, though - I write thousands of words a day and the SP4 type cover is infinitely better. The Macbook keyboard is simply too shallow for me - it's an RSI nightmare waiting to happen.

As for all these "should I get this or a Macbook/laptop" etc comments...if you don't know WHY you want an SP4 then DON'T buy one. The key is the PEN. If you need pen input in a very portable form factor, the SP4 is hard to beat. No normal laptop can allow me to mark up PDFs, for example - the Surface can. There are plenty of laptops and cheaper hybrids out there without the pen support.

It's a good laptop. It's a good tablet. But it's a fantastic pen-enabled hybrid - that's the differentiating factor.

Hot because of price but I recently nearly pulled the trigger on one of these and ended up with a 12" MacBook retina. 512gb m5 version. It's lighter, smaller, and has a much better keyboard. The SP is an excellent concept but they keyboard isn't great, nor is the touchpad which makes it a mediocre laptop. As a tablet it is flawed. Too large and Windows doesn't work as a tablet OS for me.

Apple; give the 12" a detachable touch screen which runs iOS as well as macOS and you'll clean up.

I was only offering my experience of the Surface Pro family - as many others have here - as I think views and experiences on the quality and reliability of predecessor technology is entirely relevant. Many companies have built a reputation on quality and reliability over years and decades through the evolution of their products - German car manufacturers (pre VW scandal) is an obvious example. I therefore think my posts entirely relevant. You may choose to think otherwise but then frankly your thoughts are pretty irrelevant to me.

My apologies. So a £300 item would be £240? I assumed quidco would apply 10% on the final price after the first 10% was applied, e.g. £270, making the total £243. If that's not the case then that's amazing. Never knew quidco was such good value.

I received an MS Surface Pro 3 from my employer about 9 months ago, along with five of my colleagues. They have been nothing but trouble and totally temperamental - real problems when you dock / un-dock them, freeze constantly and simply switch themselves off for no apparent reason. All have been returned to IT and have come back pretty much the same. All have had a major update about six weeks ago and were returned in equally a remperamental state. Three have been subject to complete rebuild but to no avail and with an almighty cheer I celebrated the death of mine a fornight ago - complete failure of the battery. I requested my old Lenovo Thinkpad back but alas my good friends at Microsoft will be supplying me with a new Surface Pro - I really wish they wouldn't. Someone said earlier that these devices are the future of PC/Laptop/Tablet - if you want you to use your Device as Frisbee then that is certainly the case, however, if you actually want something that is in any way functional and reliable, look elsewhere.

Wow. That really contrasts to the experience my work has had with them.
Half of the office are equipped with Pro 3's or 4's and they have been flawless. Coupled with the docks and keyboard covers they're perfect for serious desktop work and moving around meeting rooms. I can't imagine my company ever finding something that adds such value to the business.

I nearly cried when they took away my Pro 3

I sadly have been responsible for supporting SP3's at work..they have had numerous issues (not a huge percentage but fairly significant) Quite often they will refuse to see the external keyboard or when restarting just display the "surface" logo and go no further. Often (but not always) the fix is to hold the power button down for a minute or so to force a proper restart.. failing that either keep the SP3 at the "surface" logo or hold the volume up button up while doing the power button and going into the bios.. keep it powered up without the power supply.. allow the battery to flatten completely .. it will power down of course.. often fixes issues. We have just started dealing with SP4's no problems "yet" time will tell !
Cameron583 to rowlanddvd
19 Aug 16 #80
I don't see how your post is relevant? You had a different device? A lot changes in a year. Apple went from a phone you couldnt hold in a particular way (iPhone 4) to one of their best iPhones in a year.
plap to rowlanddvd
19 Aug 16 #108
We have a few dozens SP3's and they used to be glitchy but make sure to upgrade them to latest drivers/firmware (via Windows Update). Make sure drivers match firmware (Windows Update will install you the latest one) and then the experience is great (apart from the occasional draining battery in sleep... but that is related to the Intel chipset and happens on laptops too).
Docking issues: are those Surface docks? If not they probably have Displaylink (the HP and Dell docks we have use DisplayLink), upgrade the DisplayLink driver from their website and that gets rid of the docking issues.

Microsoft has this tech back in 2005 when they were looking at using MS surface as a industry application. Like paying for meals and drinks.

Microsoft has a habit of storing fantastic products and milking its existing ones. They don't want to see mankind improve with technology. The just want our ££££
And they pay big ££ for reviews.

Look at their new advert the guy says "I can't use a pen on a Mac"
Lie - you can but its more intuitive to use a finger.

Microsoft could have made the iPhone the iPad, something similar to a galaxy note / edge or any of these sleek products but they choose to make rubbish that falls apart with no servicing options.
mistertad111 to prash_2k
19 Aug 16 #107
There's not much Microsoft technology in here - they're simply assembling parts from other hardware vendors. A (*useful) dual-purpose laptop/tablet crossover device would have been an entirely impractical proposition in 2005 because of the power/battery balance or display technology available for starters. Microsoft's only play here is the fact that Windows 10 (kinda) works across both formats.

But you didn't quote what you did with it, just implied that if you want a desktop experience, you'd need 8GB of RAM, that's the problem probably more than 75% of people, including quite heavy users, would happily live in 4GB of RAM, but posts like yours which don't differentiate between your workload and the norm. Thankfully you did qualify it later, but it doesn't change your first post.

I rarely use more than 4GB on my tablets (just checked neither my desktop replacement laptop nor my tablet is using more than half the available 8GB), despite having SQL, Visual Studio and Office running. Frankly if I struggled to live within 4GB of RAM just browsing, I'd be looking to change either the browser, my working practices or simply close a few more tabs a bit more frequently.

I have 23 of this exact model out in the field.
Early sleep/wake issues have been resolved, I still recommend shutting them down if your not going to use them for a while. (common sense really)
Fantastic piece of kit with no complaints from the users, the majority of their issues relate to user error or elsewhere.
I had the SSD fail in one from a release batch and they do all seem to have a little backlight bleed at the bottom of the screen (only noticeable during the dark boot screens)

I don't know what that guy talking about his surface pro 3 being locked to Windows 7...
AFAIK the SP3 came with Windows 8 and there is no driver support for Windows 7 or earlier? (Not possible to my knowledge)

MA3STRO to StillTheFlyest
19 Aug 16 4 #77
Obviously depends on usage, but I think I'm getting about five or six hours with battery saver on. Possibly more.

I actually think Windows 10 is pretty good. I use an iMac every day as well. Every app I use is cross platform, but I run into less software issues in Windows (there's lots of little annoyances in OS X when it comes to certain apps such as recording and gaming etc.).

I can happily use either system for general usage and really don't understand why people feel so passionately about one over the other; particularly with light users. I've met people who pretty much only use their laptop for browsing the web and then proudly say Apple is infinitely better despite the fact they are using a cross platform browser that gives the same experience on every platform.

But I digress

4gb is fine, I run SQL server 2014, IIS, Dreamweaver and Photoshop with 2 monitors on my HP spectre x360, runs spot on. Too many people assume you 32gb of ram to run chrome and edit pictures of your cat. 4gb is enough, unless you're editing 4k videos or running multiple vms.

My last laptop was an Lenovo X220 with an i5 and 8GB of RAM (well technically still a current laptop as I still have it). It had 4GB of RAM and I found it was bottlenecking a lot. Photoshop was ok, but opening too many tabs slowed things right down.

Upgrading to 4GB of RAM fixed that, though there is no doubt I needed that because Chrome is such a resource hog. Adding RAM to my Lenovo was cheap and easy. The big problem with devices like the Surface Pro is that you can't upgrade anything. So long term 8GB makes more sense.

How's the HP spectre? I had a look at that too. Very cool.

I might get my girlfriend a convertible 2 in 1 laptop in the future, but don't think she would need a top of the range model. She'd manage with 4GB.
Agharta to jaydeeuk1

4GB is not enough for me due to multi-tasking and having a dozen tabs in a browser is part of that.

I got the i7 256gb SSD with 16gb RAM last week.

All in all I'm really happy with it, though playing back clips through Premiere Pro CC is not as good as I had hoped for an i7. For general usage and most non-intensive tasks the i5 will be fine.

It's a great little device and the sleep of death issue that plagued the Surface Pro 4 when it was first launched does not appear to be there. Battery life is pretty decent when the battery saver mode is activated.

I published my first impressions of it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/RrybM_1pMD8

I'm going to respectfully disagree. I use a Dell Venue 11 with only 4gb of ram and a considerably slower cpu in the form of an i3 4020y and it functions just fine. I never feel like I've opened too many tabs in Chrome, the speed of the SSD makes it feel extremely responsive and quick.

Don't get me wrong I'm not doing any heavy duty image or video editing on it, but Windows 10 manages memory extremely well.

That being said I wouldn't sink this large an amount of money into this device with that limited amount of memory as I'd be wanting this to have a decent lifespan that I doubt you'll get with just 4gb of ram. It's a decent price for a really nice device, but if I was spending this premium I'd stretch a little farther for a higher spec unit.

18 Aug 16 1 #43
What would you be doing on a U series CPU that would need 8GB of RAM?

I'm a heavy RAM abuser (32GB in main machine) as I do lots of simulations and 3D stuff (not games), but on the desktop, Windows 8/10 is very well optimised RAM wise. Photoshop with high resolution images / plugins etc. would take a bit longer on 4GB of RAM, but it's difficult to think of much that wouldn't also be bottlenecked by the CPU at the same time.

I think as a package, 4GB and a i5(U) is pretty reasonable and will suit most users for a device like this. I've played around with the 1GB Windows 10 tablets, and it's unbelievable what they can handle.

The terms and conditions repeatedly use the phrase laptop so if a device isn't marketed and sold as a laptop I can't see them taking it.

The terms also pretty much only include laptop cpu's so any Atom based devices are probably also not accepted.

And the offer is only upto £200 so if you rock up with a £50 tablet even if they actually would accept it that doesn't mean you're getting £200 off.

Great deal but unless you need the cpu power of the Pro4 the Surface 3 4Gb RAM may be a better alternative. The Pro4 is heavy and I found it uncomfortable to use for prolonged periods as a tablet. The 3 however I find just as comfortable as a full size iPad. Would pick the 3 over the Pro4 or iPad for general home use, I find it so convenient having a USB port and being able to run full Windows apps. I do have the keyboard which really opens up its functionality when you need it.

Full-size desktop apps rendered tiny because of poor scaling on the screen, so unfortunate, not touch friendly at all.

Got the same deal! Microsoft even swapped it out for a new one as it had a yellow line along the edge of the display. It's a nice bit of tech and many people love it, but it fell short for me on a few key areas:

Tablet style operation is simply clunky and unintuitive compared with an iOS or Android tablet. Just getting things done is not as fast or fluid to my mind. I don't want to analyse why, and maybe other people see it differently but for me the OS (and this was Windows 10) just doesn't feel like it was built to be a touchscreen OS - which is probably explained by the fact that it wasn't

Fanless is the better choice if using as a tablet IMO.

Having thought about this, just the fact that I need to buy a keyboard for it adds another £100 on top which puts me off. Keyboard is literally essential for this one, otherwise it kind of loses its point really and half of the functionality. Voting hot though because it's a good price for the tablet itself.

Would love one of these but put off by the reviews, hmmmmmm

I got one recently and am very happy with it, I think a lot of the bad reviews are from when it first came out and had a few problems which have been fixed with updates.
I'd say go for it if you can afford one.

Ignore the reviews and buy one. I have had one for 6 months and it is the future of the PC/Laptop/Tablet.

At that price it is a complete no brainer. Buy a 200gb micro SD for 45 quid and it can also be bitlockered and used as a extra hard drive.

Trust me, then thank me when you have had it for 24 hours!

UPDATE: Oh, and the new Windows 10 update makes this even better as Tablet mode is massively improved.
