They're bringing back the Maxtor brand? I thought they'd killed it!

Would you be willing to pay an additional £30 for a portable 4tb drive over a desktop 4tb drive? Is paying that much extra worth the convenience of portable over desktop? Thanks

Had the drive a few days and chuffed with it. Very fast even on USB2. cool & silent. and most importantly, detected by BT's new smart hub so can share files on a home network! hope this helps someone.

That article is wrong this isn't a SMR drive. SMR is a Seagate technology, this drive is manufactured by Samsung's portable hard drive dept, which Seagate now owns.
The drive achieves its capacity using 800GB platters, 5 of them.

I dont think I would put so much data on a Maxtor AKA Seagate hdd very poor reviews on the Seagate version just sell it under Maxtor...

it's a Samsung drive so you'll be fine, Seagate acquired Samsung's mobile hard drive department.

The 3TB version is really slow - only 20MB/s write speed - I returned mine.

That sounds like USB 2 speeds, you sure it was plugged into a working USB 3 port? :stuck_out_tongue:

What size were the files? Or was that a benchmark? That's slower than I expected

Don't think so. This is 17.5mm in its case, so most likely a 12.7mm or 15mm drive. Certainly not 9.5mm.
it uses SMR aka shingled drives, so write speeds are slower than normal drives. read speeds are ok. so fine for filling up once with media files and playing back on the move, but not so great for use as a normal drive

Maybe the Seagate brand reputation is even worse at the moment?
I guess they'll just rotate the brands rather than improve their products. Obviously that's easier for them.

Mmm I'm not sure that's wise. Last Maxtor drives I had I bought 4 of and they all died at once! Is that the reputation they want to trade off?

Seems to be £90 at Groupon using the deal on the front page. New customers use code 'APPLOVE' on the groupon app to save £15 on orders over £25.
