I think this is a brilliant idea. So much food is wasted every year but if this catches on it will reduce that waste, plus folk will get cheap resteraunt quality food for a couple of quid.

It's just getting started but if it goes well then I'm sure it will spread across the country. The restaurants gain too because they get money for food they were going to throw away. It's a win win situation for everybody.

Here's a screenshot of their map, these clusters are the only locations in the UK at the moment. There's none in the rest of the UK at present

I don't understand folks concerns about the quality of food? It will be exactly the same as every other customers food. The restaurants are bound by exactly the same laws, food and hygene rules no matter how much the meal costs.

used this for the first time. this week paid £2 for a Chinese buffet. Felt almost like I was robbing them it was so cheap. I think its a great idea, will try more restaurants to see if the standard is as high

Any food outlet that would do this, is probably already doing it with their take-away customers. I doubt very much any reputable place is going to start ruining their reputation for a few quid now and again. Not everyone is out to rip everyone else off.
The food here is probably no different to what you would get from actually eating at the restaurant a few hours before closing.

If all the other adds to > or = to £2 then I might agree the individual restaurant might not bother
another idea could be out of the rest of the 4 costs you put forward to be considered
- taxes
- app commission
- tray [Take your own container]
- restaurants employee has to waste time to be with you. [go there your self]
After knowing the calculations of the other 2 of above 4 which might make zero profit but the restaurant owner thinks of food wastage, s/he will happily participate.
Lets hope more and more takeaways and supermarket will participate in this expeditions.

You do get a reasonably large portion but you cant be choosey.

It's cheaper for restaurants to simply trow it away.
You pay £2 for your tray.
From those £2 take off:
- taxes
- app commission
- tray
- ingredients to make the food
- restaurants employee has to waste time to be with you.
Where exactly is the money you are talking about? Looks more like a charity event because they are loosing money any way.

Where wuz you when we needed you Yorkie ? we have just come back from Blackpool which is saturated with Kebab shops and fried kitchen shops that i am suprised that the beaches and sea is not saturated with oil. We did find a fish and chip eventually inland.
The cost for fish and chips was £6! It was nice but i can tell you we wont be going there for fish and chips. I wont name the shop. As our great leader once said dont give them oxygen they will only burn themselves or words to that effect.

Buffet restaurants, by their nature aren't going to be great - but been a couple of times for work leaving dos and it's been value for money. My concern would be that the food they don't want to have in their restaurant goes into the boxes of this scheme. I'd rather pay proper money for decent food less frequently, than eat cheap left over food more frequently - but each to their own.

Id hate to see what some of these 'meals' consist of , there must be some guidelines or conditions else some restaurants will probably just send you a portion of the contents of the bin.
Heat though, its a good idea of course if it does work for all involved - evidently there is potential,
Plus a small possibility general dining costs will be reduced at restaurants making extra money off their waste so a possible benefit for all.
I hope it catches on but personally i wouldn't be a customer,

I'm not keen on buffets but I'll humour you on this. Assume the food regularly gets replaced throughout the day, but what you can't tell is when it was last replaced, and how long that batch has been sat there before you get it.

such a good idea. nothing in Leicester yet but imagine this will really take off. would be nice for filters to be added to the app too so you can filter cuisines. very dubious about buffets though unless eating right away. I'm sure you're not supposed to reheat previously cooked food and especially food that would have been sitting around in the final hours of buffet service :s

Can't believe two of you could actually believe that your example is likely to happen. Every buffet I've ever been to have the food on offer replaced many times throughout the day. If you've experienced what you say then you must be going to some real dive.
