Here is a lovely long weekend (leaving on a Friday returning on a Monday), to Rome from Manchester. It is from 6th-9th January, so just after Christmas, so forget getting your other half rubbish Christmas presents they won't use, and get a lovely city break instead!
The hotel is the beautiful Hotel Villa San Lorenza Maria, which has amazing reviews. The rate also includes breakfast and it is a short walk from the Termini Station, but also right next to a metro which is ideal for exploring Rome. You'll stay here for 3 nights.
I haven't included transfers but at the cheapest these can be 1.50Euro if you don't mind walking some distance from the airport to the train station, or there are a wide range of buses such as the Terravision buses which are around 4Euro pp each way which go straight to the station and you can walk to the hotel from there. Alternatively, taxis are available but they will obviously be more expensive.

Thanks, that is useful to know for Spain, however this deal is for Rome, in Italy. It is likely to be cold there too though.

You are there to witness Day of the Kings - 6 January, the Christmas celebration in Spain. Beautiful city but wrap up as is can be so cold in Madrid, enjoy . Caliente

I went to Rome in January this year - weather was lovely (very hot actually) and 3 days was enough to do all the main attractions. Don't forget to include the city tax, payable to your accommodation on arrival and is per person per night. We bought the bus tickets on the plane to make life easy.
Think I paid about £250 for 2 of us for 3 days, flights from Liverpool and decent self catering accommodation.

Eating out is EXPENSIVE. 'Attractions' are EXPENSIVE (but to can buy a pass beforehand which gets you fast track entry into some of the places). There are lots of lucky lucky men everywhere who tirelessly try to flog junk and can be a bit inappropriate. Didn't bother us but might do for other people.
Everywhere is within walking distance if you are relatively fit and heathy. We did a lot of stuff on day one in 17c heat with large back packs full of stuff. And I was pregnant.
Well worth going.

EATING Eating out is as expensive as you make it and a lot of the main sights are free. Yes you have to pay € 7 to go in the collaseum but it is more impressive from the outside and Vatican, pantheon and main squares are free to roam. Sitting in a piazza with a gelato is not expensive and a great way to spend the afternoon. You can spend a fortune if you want though.

You did really well on the weather for January. When I went in January en-route back from Bali/Australia one year, it was freezing (or perhaps it was just that we'd been in hot weather for 4 weeks)!

The colosseum is more than that, I think it was €12 each. And the Vatican museums, the basilica, the forum all cost more €€€. The metro/tube wasn't too bad. Why bother going if you're not going to see all the stuff? Yes, you can sit with an expensive ice cream on a bench...but you can also do that in the UK. I also think you'd struggle eating just ice cream for 4 days. :smile:

As a tip, if anyone does book it may be worth contacting the colosseum website directly as they state "free admission on the first Sunday of the month. On this occasion it is not possible to make reservation".
So, the first Sunday of the month is free entry, you can't reserve tickets and given that the 1st January is the first Sunday, and they are closed, the 8th is technically the first Sunday that it is open so it may be free. There you go, free entrance. Details here
