Summer Reading Challenge offer
The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre
Children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge run by local libraries get free entry to the Roald Dahl Museum. The Museum and Story Centre is targeted at 6-12 year olds. (Under 5s go in for free normally.)
I should have said that children can have free entry as soon as they join the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library, you do not need to complete the challenge before going.

How do they prove they are taking part? Take along their little folders?
Just read the offer -
As proof of participation, children will need to bring and show their collector folder or an item that shows they are taking part, like the bookmark or the BFR wristband. The invitation will not be proof of participation
In Havering we have the folders but not bookmarks or wristbands so make sure you have the right thing with you if you go.

It's a lovely little museum but people should bear in mind it is VERY small but there's a nice level of interactivity and an area for kids to have a go at creating something themselves.
Great Missenden is also a beautiful little village, I'd recommend walking up to the church at the top of the hill where his grave is and you'll find the BFG's footprints.
We went there during a London break and got the train from Marylebone and Sophie Dahl got on the train, she is a striking woman and, needless to say, that made my holiday. <3
EDIT: And you can get 2 for 1 tickets if you travel by train!!

There's also a nice little cafe, free drop-in crafts every day and village and countryside trails where you can explore the local area and spot some of the sights that inspired Dahl, like Matilda's library, the house that inspired Sophie's norphanage in The BFG and the petrol pumps from Danny, the Champion of the World.

Does anyone know how this compares to the Roald Dahl exhibition at London South Bank that was on earlier this year?

They're quite different. The Wondercrump Roald Dahl exhibition (which has now moved to Cardiff) is an 1-hour interactive tour through Roald Dahl's life, featuring seven different installations which explore a different aspect of his life. The tour features some items from the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre archives.
The museum, on the other hand, features three interactive galleries with lots of items from the archive, has Roald Dahl's original writing hut, free daily drop-in crafts, a shop and a cafe. You can also explore the village of Great Missenden where Dahl lived and wrote for 36 years, spotting some of the things that inspired his work. Take a look at the Museum's virtual tour to see for yourself!
