Just found this on the Co-Op website. I'm not a TV expert so can't say how good or bad this unit is but the price for a Smart 4K Ultra HD TV seems to be extremely good.
For someone who just wants a decent telly to watch programmes and use the Smart features it seems a decent deal.

I'm going to guess for £400, it isn't HDMI 2.0?
Yes, I use a 64" TV as my PC monitor and yes, it is important that I buy a 60hz capable TV.

The 48" has HDMI 2.0 on all 4 ports, so this is likely to as well.

Which is what just about everybody calls 4k anyway.

Incorrect. It's definitely 4K as defined for consumers, no 4K TVs use a 4096 resolution. That is the standard resolution for consumer 4K. Stupid but true.
Yes it should be 4096 but that's only used in digital cinema.

Wow that is an amazing discount! I just got the 48" version of this a couple of days ago from Tesco. I really like it touch wood. I found the default picture settings very poor but after finding some recommended settings on another HUKD thread it looks massively better and 4K Youtube footage is a sight to behold. That said, kinda wish I hadn't seen this thread as I'm wondering if I should have paid the extra for this as with 4k bigger is pretty much always better for appreciating the extra detail.
If only I'd known about this getting a price drop and the discount code a few days ago, I'd have a 55" TV instead of 48". I'd consider returning the 48" but it doesn't seem right to return a perfectly good set and I got a good deal on the 48" too, got the 48" for £239 with a discount code and a giftcard, so guess I did ok anyway but I'd have probably paid the extra ~£100 for the bigger screen if I'd seen this sooner....

So for the price and spec is this worth getting for a 4k tv?
ST3123 to CallumS
21 Aug 16#23
Absolutely, for ~£350 it is a total bargain for a 55". Assuming it is the same as the 48" I have they perform way better than the price suggests. Motion handling absolutely fine, no blurring. Has no problem at all with 1080P sources, looks just as good if not better than on a 1080P set. The menus are clear and easy to navigate. Smart TV functionality is a bit basic and lacks Amazon but it has Netflix and Youtube in 4K and iPlayer for catch up plus a bunch of international/chinese apps I've never heard of. Performance is very smooth considering as a budget set this probably only has a basic dual core CPU at best. Still with the money you can save with this you could easily buy a 4K Fire TV Box to go with it to make the Smart side a bit smarter....
Sound is much better than you would expect considering how thin it is and it even has a port for a external sub if you want to boost the audio on the cheap without needing a soundbar, really clever feature, more sets should do that IMHO.

21 Aug 16#24
Agreed. In theory I could return the 48" to Tesco as they appear to allow change of mind returns up to 30 days (providing TVs included) but repacking up a big TV is a bit of a faff and I don't have enough left to buy the 55" until the refund comes back from Tesco, so I'd have to wait, by which time the Coop one might have sold out or gone up. Maybe could ask if they would reserve one for me or do finance or something but think it would be a bit of a long shot getting them to agree...
Or maybe best just keep the 48" for a few years and then get a 55" when UHD is more mature and HDR is standard and even cheaper?
Wish I hadn't seen this thread now :disappointed: damn HUKD making me want to spend more.

usually dig into the specs and research for weeks when buying a new tv, but for £350 delivered, minus what i'll get off quidco. absolutely worth the risk and if it's not up to scratch, then i'm sure i'll find a use for it

Yeah I couldn't agree more.. this is the first time I've bought a TV within just a few hours.. no pouring over specs or comparing to other models for days on end. Wreckless spending feels good! However, as usual, surely buyers remorse is looming...
£7 quidco tracked already.. not sure if it will pay out because I used the -£35 voucher.. but worth a punt.

Had mine delivered today at work.
Left my kodi box remote control at home so cant test any 4k stuff yet!
Went into the Settings menu and via WiFi it updated quite quickly to:
Software V.0.1.33.11
Application V.0.1.6.4
After the update I scanned again, and then it updated again to:
Software V.0.1.33.17
Application V.0.1.6.4
Observations so far:
Playback of 4k youtube clips is a little bit stuttery.
From USB, a 4k clip plays back perfectly (this one http://4ksamples.com/4k-uhd-fireworks-sample/)
There is an "information booklet" section in the menu... it confirms that from USB, HEVC can play [email protected] (160Mbps bitrate).. but for H264, its only 30fps for 4K (60fps for 1080P).
And from the HDMI, it supports both 4K and UHD at 24hz, 25hz, 30hz, 50hz and 60hz.

For anyone that's interested there is a firmware update that makes the TV a lot better and if you're technically inclined you can get your TV to act as a PVR and enable DTS. The MB in this TV is MB100 and you can upgrade the firmware to V.0.1.34.23
Thanks, this is very interesting. I assume you have to install this via USB rather than just have the TV check for an update online? I do check for updates now and again but it hasn't downloaded any in several months (seemed to need 2-3 when I first set it up), so I suspect the official support for it has dried up now?
What exactly does the update do? Is there a update notes anywhere? While I'm pleased with the set as it is, I'm definitely interested in any improvements new software might bring, only thing is I am a bit nervous of bricking the TV if it decides it doesn't like the update file...

Yes you have to install it via USB but that's pretty simple. The main improvement I think is the picture on SD which I think was pretty poor on this television. It also turns the menus yellow/black which makes the TV look a lot more classy in my opinion. It is well worth enabling the PVR and DTS. The PVR function allows you to record to a hard drive/memory stick and transfer those recording to other media i.e a PC. I think a software update will also enable Freeview Play at some point.

Thanks, yes, the SD picture quality is one of my main bugbears with the set. luckily I have a decent number of HD sources (and even some in UHD, which look awesome) but if I switch to a SD channel either on the internal tuner or my Humax Freesat PVR the picture quality is almost always awful with lots of obvious artefacts and pixellation. I'd be quite surprised if they can do much about it with an update as I believe a lot of the issue is just the low source quality and the large screen size but maybe they have found a more effective upscaling algorithm....

Menu then 1505 and then select 'yes' to install, it takes a couple of minutes to install and turns off and then back on. I'm just downloading MB100-34-25 that appears to have gone on today. What I really want is Freeview Play that has appeared on other models that I believe have the same motherboard.

7 Jan 17#54
Well I've had the MB100-34.23 on for over two months and I've had no problems and its also faster and all round better in my opnion, especially if you enable the PVR function. I put MB100-34.25 on last night and I can't see the difference, so if you want to play it safe I'd put on version 23.
