If you live in Nottingham IC Discounts have piles of these at just 25p each!! They were never worth the full rrp, and were sold by IC discounts just after the games for £1 each but have been reduced even further now, they have lots of 2012 Olympic leftover stock including paperweights, magnets, coke glasses, corgi buses, etc all at giveaway prices.

"Ultra rare" - hmmm so ultra rare that they are being sold as a complete set massively under RRP.
The fact that four years on these are still being sold makes it pretty clear to me how rare they are.
Millions of these were made, OK a mint boxed set in 100 years will probably be worth a little more than the original cheap price, but please no-one think they will be on Antiques Roadshow!
Remember all those CD's we bought in the 90s thinking they would still be worth something now... And they are now 2 for a £1!

Very true. With economic growth and globalisation comes an increase in the size of consumer markets. I think there are very few things nowadays produced in such small quantities that they will be rare some day.
Everyone has caught on that keeping old tat might be a good investment. But it doesn't work when so many are produced and everyone is doing the same!

The Radio 4 programme More or Less recently did an article on collectibles, antiques and inflation, and pointed out that today's going rate for a 1950's Hornby train set in mint condition is exactly the same as what it originally cost, when adjusted for inflation.

Yes! I listened to that very episode not so long ago.
I was so suckered in, in my teens in the 90s, into "limited edition" CDs from the likes of Blur, Radiohead etc. What was I thinking, £15 for a limited edition of 100,000..... Now worth 1p plus postage.
