Good price although still cannot warrant one for the amount of drilling into walls I do and I know all my cables run up/down from the switches/sockets and don't have any pipes in the walls.

I have a similar Bosch device and I too have found it unreliable for stud detection - the traditional tapping of the knuckle on the wall and listening to the change in reverberation is more accurate!

I needed to find studs to drill in hooks for a heavy mirror. I did quite a bit of research and people implied these electronic devices were not very reliable at times. One builder suggested using a neodymium magnet (very strong pull) to locate the nails behind the plasterboard. Once you find a nail just stick a small marker on it (I used PostIt notes cut into 2mm strips) - once you've found a few nails you can see the direction of the stud. I used a paper towel between the magnet and the plasterboard to avoid making marks on the paint as the pull is strong once the magnet is over a nail.

This is the magnet I bought (£5.11) but weaker ones may do the job just as well. Just be careful with this magnet as it supposedly has a 12kg pull.

for stud detecting would stick with a magnet (find nails in a straight line). I've got this and it's OK for checking where you think pipes and wires may be but not 100% reliable, better to use as a check of what you already suspect
