I have poweramp, one problem I have is when on holiday with no internet connection is poweramp checks to ensure app is licenced, when it cant verify this it will not work. Not much good when you want to listen to some music when yo are abroad. Going to give this a try

This is one of the oldest and top players. I have used most other players mentioned above. Poweramp is good but if not on Wi-Fi, you'll never know when the license check by the paranoid dev strikes really. He does not so much updates, neutron player is by him too and same problems will be there as he moves on. Another good one is JetAudio plus paid version. What do all these have in common for me to use? They let me list music not by confusing playlist systems or whatever weird algorithm listing hundreds and thousands of albums & songs. They let me set a folder on my SD card (0MP3) as my music folder to show and start with at launch, then each artist or genre has a folder then inside each artist folder, each album has a folder.
The above mentioned plus this PlayerPro let you do that. In menu button, settings, music library, music folder: pop-up box appears & click top check box then navigate to your music folder and go inside and set it.
To browse by folder, or any other playlist, at homepage on launch, swipe right, you'll see under browser categories: browse by folder, and the rest.
In settings, look and feel, choose to download more skins, a few dark ones are nice like Carbon, kk, iOS.
For browse by folder default is list but for other playlists it's the bigger horrible "grid" look which is icon size. To change the other browser types icons grid to list, in settings, BROWSERS, click on LAYOUT for each browser type, change to list. Gives you much more on screen acreage than grid. OF course browse by folder is always list as said.
When you click on download more skins as mentioned above, you'll see DSP pack by the dev too, install it as improves quality and is free.
Has widgets too. From many players I've used, this playerpro, poweramp and jetaudio plus are the ones I use regularly. My advice, buy it while it's cheap for a short while. Google subsidises these sales of big names, might not be this cheap again. Poweramp dev designed and coded his app based on this good old PlayerPro which has a free version too but I think it's got ads. This is the original and probably still the best. Get it.

Poweramp needs data Conection for the first 24hours after purchase only. It so it can look at the album art. I use it on a old phone as a mp3 player with no data conection as I don't have a sim fitted. I use wifi though, when at home.

I faced this issue as well, if you have root and use Greenify, Amplify or a similar app then this is the cause.
Do not put to sleep or disable the PowerAMP Pro unlocker as it'll cause issue and ask you to reinstall etc.
Of course if you do not use any of the above then it's just a fault with PA .

Is it me or music you purchase from itunes (.m4a) and no matter what ID editing software you use to edit the meta data, once you transfer your music on to your Google mobile it places the song in incorrect order. Every music app does this apart from Sony Music.
No problems with MP3.

It plays flac m4a etc etc.
Problem with other free players is that in future they could ram loads of ads or pestering notifications or other strategies to monetise. With this, one of the best music players, you will get updates which are ad free etc.
tried and bought quite a few media players - incl poweramp. But for some reason always go back to PlayerPro - love it! and it is flawless. They have also, in v3, introduced really nice skins for the player which makes it very customisable. And the free DSP pack already mentioned. No complaints at all of the player for audio (video .. another story).
Interestingly palyer pro has 100,000-500,000 downloads but poweramp has 1,000,000-5,000,000 (so 10 times more) .. go figure!

I undrstand the point you are making, but I've seen paid apps with adverts too. You can't predict what these companies will do.
elTuco
23 Aug 16#41
It's just mathematical statistics and probabilities. Most ad based or Other pestering methods are in free apps. Most big name top apps which have free versions keep ads out of their paid version and only have them in the free or trial versions, so does this dev, otherwise people buy another ad free app with their money.
Secondly the main danger with this app is if the dev himself died or similar. Finally it's the oldest music player amongst the big heavy hitters of its kind mentioned in this thread and most stable with regular updates and no nasty surprises, very stable dev and app. Personally can't ask for more.

All music players lack real usability compared to the iPod and it's scroll wheel which was brilliant.
I don't think it makes it useless, but can be annoying (mine always seems to happen on the tube, almost like it knows I can't get internet). Happens at random times - nothing for 2 months then twice in a week.

i have had problems with poweramp on my sony xperia x as well as z3, poweramp tends to crash on my phone. Poweramp licence check struck again yesterday for me on one of the phones. I think part of his algorithm to check includes a random factor. He rebadged and improved poweramp as Neutron app under another dev name. He will probably stop working on Neutron and rebadge it as something else next year. He does not have a good reputation. This PlayerPro @10p for life is a steal and also if JetAudio Plus comes up in a sale, get that too as it has browse by folder, big widgets, many features etc. Both of these are the best, free ones might start showing ads later.

When pressing back button enough times inside the app, it exits the app to (Nova) launcher but for me the music keeps playing. It works fine and keeps playing after exit, whether I entered the app via a widget or the app icon. Pressing HOME button also exits the app to launcher and keeps playing the music just fine too. If probs, might be a conflict with some launcher or app that executes launcher function types.

Create a folder called music then put 2 folders inside called music and xmas respectfully. Playerpro lets you play all music in a specific folder so you can go out one folder to turn xmas music on dec 1st You can put playlists into folders and play just these very versatile. Wont touch poweramp now
