I'll stick with Windows 7... it works and I can control the spyware/malware/bloatware that you can't with the repeating reinstalling forever Windows 10... Microsoft will own and can sell your surfing/lifestyle details... nice

If you want to try OEM licenses £13.92 here, even cheaper if you use a Win 7 Pro key from there

You'd have to be quick if you're going to go with Windows 7 and upgrade to 10, there's only a couple of days left to do so for free.

Agree with this - I bought a couple of Win 7 licenses from Opium Pulses recently and they have been fine (used for Win 10 upgrades).

Do you know if the free upgrade allows you to change your motherboard?
Just Wondering
26 Jul 16#5
I believe the license is locked to the motherboard based on a thread I started and the replies I received over at tomshardware forum.
I am trying to sort my upgrade as we speak. But, I am also trying to keep windows 7, and install the update on a separate partition. Not going right at the moment.

install windows 10, then roll back to 7. you can then upgrade to 10 anytime you like in future.

I have to admit that a lot of things about 10 really annoy me. I actually preferred 8.1 over 10 tbh.

because your hardware doesn't support windows 10, or your software. I couldn't get it installed on one of my pc's that runs win 7x64 as it asked for a driver disc before it would start installing anything. I know from experience on another pc running windows 10 that it doesn't like the raid/sata cards and there are no drivers for them for win10x64

Because older machines are not certified for Windows 10. Eg Dell does not update drivers and the many crash Eg video drivers. Hence it is best to stick to Windows 7.

I understand this is just a key. How could you install it into new PC with no current OS running on it ??
I understand the way to go is
- Use an old PC to create the bootable Windows 10 in USB stick or DVD using program such as rufus.
- Use the windows product key when prompted during the installation.
My question is :
Where to find the trusted website to download Windows 10 to create bootable USB and/or DVD
Is there any better program or way than rufus to create a bootable USB and/or DVD ??
Thanks

you can download windows from the Microsoft website. just google to find the direct links or the media creation tool
It's extremely simple you use the Media Creation Tool which is free from Microsoft, it does everything for you.

It does because I have done it. I went from AMD to Intel last Christmas. I didn't even need to do reactivation and that included starting clean with a fresh SSD as well.

That's actually very good news for me because I'll might need to change my motherboard and CPU sometime next year since I last got them about 5 years back and they're gettingon a bit.

You'll be fine. The worst scenario would be that you would have to go through the Windows activation process over the phone but that just takes a few minutes.

Moving windows from one machine to another is acceptable if you have a full retail version. If you had Windows 7 as a full retail and then upgraded you could move Windows 10 elsewhere. I think the licensing is different for OEM and will require you to buy a new key if you change motherboards.

The win10 UPGRADE allows you to do an in-place upgrade. specifically keeping all your existing data and settings. This is meant to be for a new install, but in all honesty I cant see why you couldnt update an existing machine/ win-os but you would lose all your settings AND have to re-install all your programs. NOTE for Samsung RAPID users -- not allowed yet on WIN10. So I'll be rolling back to 7.

That is possibly true. My upgraded Windows 8 key was one of those from when Microsoft were selling it for £12.50 at launch back in late 2012. These OEM keys may be more restrictive than mine.

So if you buy this, it is legal and will let you have windows update on? Seems too cheap??

Ah I must have confused myself with the OEM version restrictions. Mine is a full retail win 7. And I'll be completing a clean install of Win 10 (would have preferred an update for now but the Intel graphic driver issue gave me loads of problems withthe installation)

Excuse me if I'm being thick, but how do you roll back to 7 after upgrading to 10? I keep getting the "Win 10 update now" alerts, but I've been resisting as I'm happy with 7, but concerned as it won't be supported for much longer.
Thanks for any help you can give

When you upgrade to W10 from 7, you get 30 days to go back to 7.
If you have already activated W10 on your machine but decide to go back to W7, then you an install W10 again for free in the future even though the free upgrade offer will have lapsed (July 29th deadline I think).
I'm more worried by a message on my Windows Insider W10 O/S that I've been using on & off for 12 months now, nice freebie because the previous O/S was Vista. It's telling me that they're going to take my W10 away from me! I thought I had it for life provided I stayed enrolled on the Insider prog?

Yeah. I've had to do this in the past after I blew some hardware. Was surprisingly painless.
Just updated my work PC from Win 7 Pro 64, to Win 10 64.
Network settings got all messed up. (Probably due to funky dual network configuration, virtual machines bridging etc etc) Had to get that fixed before I could get online to fix the messed up GFX drivers.
Then had to update one of my network controllers. Wasn't showing any problems, and nothing in Windows Update. But it didn't work until I told it to update itself via Device Manager.
Then Windows Update got itself stuck. Sat at 0% for around an hour until I got bored of waiting and downloaded and installed the stuck KB manually in about 5 or 10 minutes.
Now back using IE as Edge refuses to paste anything from the clipboard. Press CTRL+V (or right click/paste) and it comes up with a message saying "Use CTRL+V to paste". And pastes nothing. Helpful. Definitely stuff in the clipboard as it pastes into Notepad OK.
So first impressions of an update install are not great. For me.
Oh yeah. And switched off about 3 pages worth of spying options as well. I imagine there are more. But it's only a work PC so not really that bothered.
My main gaming rig at home is staying on 7 Pro 64 for now. I have 10 on my laptop at home so will need to play around some more before I'm happy with it.
