I have spent years following various forums and websites regarding cheap flights and you have to be the first person ever to say skipping the first leg actually works. The general rule is if you miss the first leg then the rest of the flight will be cancelled. This is because BA knows people will do just that if not. What did the check in staff say at Heathrow? I'm curious how you managed to blag it. My understanding was not showing up for your first leg triggers an automatic cancellation. No exemptions. The return flight is slightly different especially if you need to change airports in London. Still risky though for the reasons others have mentioned.

Tempting but I have an outstanding speeding fine from 2013 that will probably prevent my entry into OZ.

If I'd not just booked my summer holiday in Cornwall I'd be on this. Weekend in Stockholm and 3 weeks in Oz! Brilliant.

BA have a few good deals, they had a 1st class flight to California on the other day for something like £1400. Ridiculously low for 1st and well worth doing at least once in my book, you would normally be lucky to get business at that rate.

Slightly confused, won't you need return from here to Sweden as well..

you can do it on a one-way to sweden........when you fly back just jump off in heathrow providing you only have hand luggage.
I still wouldn't do it because I don't like the idea by spending 3 hours flying to sweden, flying back again to london, then starting the long flights to oz.

I did 4 weeks in South America on hand luggage. Have to pack smart and watch weight limits on some airlines though.

Skip the Sweden trip and jump on at Heathrow. Then on way back. Get of at Heathrow. I did it this way last time when the New York - Oslo flight thing was on here.

BA mentioned changing their policies recently yo charge you the full fare for London to Sydney if you don't do the last leg and they normally cancel the rest of the journey if you skip any legs.

No need to have only hand luggage. When returning from Sydney, at check-in simply state that you want your luggage checked to London only.

Many. Infact, people backpack for 6-12 months on hand luggage only! Google 'Osprey Farpoint 40'

I backpacked for almost a year, but went with a 90L backpack, plus a 20L day sack. The backpack had to go in the hold on all flights (also carrying liquids, penknife and few things that couldn't go in hand luggage).

I've seen similar prices last year with them to Cape Town over Christmas which is their summer but soon sold up. BA trying to snaffle trade away from Star Alliance partners

If you don't get on the first flight then you are a ''no show'' and the whole trip is cancelled automatically, anyone that tries to get on at Heathrow will be in for a huge disappointment. I do the Dublin/Heathrow/LA route 4 or 5 times a year and have witnessed this more than once where people were given the option of losing the flight or paying the full Heathrow/LA ticket price on top of what they had already paid. The cheap price reflects the indirect routing and no airline is going to lose money by allowing passengers to buy an indirect route ticket and then fly direct.

I rang virgin saying I overslept the day it flew out to Oslo. Got the plane at Heathrow to NYC 3 days later as planned. Come back to Heathrow week after. Told Virgin I had family problem before flew out from NYC and they had my bags offloaded in London. Nice £205 flight.

I flew out with one company, and return back with another. The 2nd company who I returned with, also had outbound flight for me. But as i was already in my destination i didnt use it.

Nope, it is not linked to your UK licence. I know someone that had a fine then returned a couple of years later and rented a car again and got let in (and no it wasn't me)!

FYI on multiple flights I've never missed the initial leg but on the return journey I've frequently exited in London or other European airports. Firstly if you intend on exiting then make sure your last leg flight is the next day or at least a good 8hrs pls later, that way you'll get your luggage back. For example your London to Sweden leg is the day after you arrive into London. Simples. You exit the airport and don't return for your flight the following day or whenever back to Sweden.
The other thing I've done with SAS before when I wanted to exit in Copenhagen and then do a Ryanair flight back to Liverpool, rather than go Copenhagen back to Sweden, change airports and go back to the UK was to ask for them to only check my luggage into Copenhagen, I collected it and rechecked in. They could have said no though....
Sweden is a bit annoying as the cheap airlines don't leave from ARN airport, it's the other two airports (can't remember the name).
