This usually retails for £200+ so is a bargain for what it is. Also, due to the Qualcomm chipset it performs far better at MU-MIMO than the more expensive R8500.

This has been on lightening deals and deal of the day quite a few times, not sure how it differs from the generic router sent by ISP'S such as virgin and sky

It has 4 big aerial things, you can see them in the photo, I spotted them straight away.

Does this have the mu-mimo? Thinks its the D7800 version that does i may be wrong though

This does have MU-MIMO and is the R7800, currently the only ones in netgears range that have it are this and the R8500, and the 8500 has a LOT of issues with it due to inferior Broadcom chipset.

does this modem router have importing a blocklist support?
I think so if you enable the parental controls. However DD-WRT also supports this router which has that and a load of extra features.

Ah yes I see thanks any idea on what the differences are between the R7800 and the D7800?

Actually i've just had a look and they appear to be similar, except the D7800 has an additional port for ADSL and slower processor but does however still have MU-MIMO

No, it's not a modem. You would plug the sky router into this and it will improve your wifi.

Use your modem as a modem, and this as a router. The Sky modem is fine at being a modem, it's just pretty bad at the router part.

I've got a bt open reach router which connects to my sky modem. the sky modem outputs the wifi. it's completely pants. kids are always moaning. I've got the fibre plus and the kids are still moaning. how can I improve?

There was someone that added antennas and PSU shielding to his sky router to good effect but if you are that technical then you would probably be able to figure how to extract your sky username to use in a decent modem/router

I bought Netgear D7000 recently to replace my talktalk standard router & it is in different league altogether. Much better signal with way faster wifi speed , almost same as wired connection.
Excellent router, worth every penny

Dropping £150 on a router is one of those tech purchases where I would balk at the price.
Presumably most of that 'super quality' is wasted when it communicates with the <50p rubbish on the other end?
I'm not claiming to be correct so would welcome justification.

Got this from Amazon.de about a year ago for £60 delivered. I sold it on for £90 a few months ago when I got a BT Hub and distance wise the BT Hub is better in my 3 bed post war semi. But I did manage about 25 Mb/s between wireless ac devices (1 gig file in 40 secs) on this if they were in the same room as the router. Don't know if that's worth £150. The software isn't the greatest on these, fairly simple, it had less features than a Virgin Superhub, occasionally stopped working for no apparent reason and took an ice age to boot. It's also bloody massive, about 3/4 the footprint of an Xbox and those aerials are big too. It looks like you're trying to contact distant planets, not just get WiFi when you're on the loo. Oh and that's the other thing, distance dropped after a firmware update. When I 1st got it, the signal was strong through 2 walls into the kitchen. Signal was non-existent in the kitchen (and toilet) after 1st update and never improved with subsequent ones.

I take it back, mine was an R7500 (no Mu-Mimo - otherwise identical). Maybe this one is better.

If as I'm frequently told wifi is such a poor substitute for wired or powerline connections in terms of speed and reliability, why would I want to spend this much on trying to improve it when far better results could be had by going down the powerline route or running cable's?
randomnut to mwa
30 Jul 16#25
Depends on your set up. For a PC wired is always preferable, however with the correct wifi adapter this will provide faster speeds than a 1gb wired connection if it has decent signal. I would prefer decent wireless connection than powerline in most cases.
For everything else though something like this provides better wifi coverage and better performance than other routers particularly if the end devices support MU-MIMO.
I've just replaced an R7000 with this which itself is a decent router and the wifi performance is much improved.

Cost/inconvenience of running cables. Support for wireless only devices. Solid wifi etc.
I do run a powerline to the back of the house though with another wireless AP. I also removed the need for a 2nd powerline to the FireTV in the bedroom when I changed to a better TP-Link wireless router with 5Ghz band with n and ac.

This seems to tick all of the boxes for me, but wondering about alternatives out there.
I currently have a HH5 that has poor WiFi performance upstairs... so I'm looking for something that had the following features:
- better WiFi performance than the HH5
- usb port for media sharing from hhd
- vpn option for my IPVanish
Tv and amazonTV are both wired so not overly fussed about having blistering speeds over WiFi.
Any help?

Sounds like it would do what you need but not sure about the VPN. I know this does have a vpn but do not know about IPVanish. As for signal I live in a 4 bed house and now get strong wifi signal, even 5Ghz signal all around the house where even the R7000 failed before and even that is better than the home hub.

thanks for that. it looks like i need a dd-wrt router which i know the R7000 is. I can't find any info on whether the R7500 is compatible as yet.
maybe a 7000 will do the job
