The Surface 3 (RRP £419 on the Microsoft Store, £405 on Amazon) is considered the first Surface which Microsoft have got right due to much improved kickstand.
9/10 on trusted reviews - full HD touchscreen, Quad-core Intel Atom x7-Z8700 processor, it includes front and rear cameras, full Windows 10 (no Windows RT anymore), microSD camera slot and USB 3. Lots of accessories are available including a pen.
Other options include
£309 with the keyboard (RRP £100)
£329 for the 4Gb RAM, 128Gb drive option
This is the non-Pro version.

I got this from Expertzone for a really low price but it is not worth it. I would rather buy a good laptop with the same money, it looks good but battery life is not good. Touch screen is not a practical way of using windows. I would go for a nice laptop new or a refurbished one ....

Actually, you'd be surprised how good touch screen with windows is, granted, it's not a replacement for the keyboard and mouse, but having spent a week away from home with a Windows tablet, I get home and continually touch my laptop screen, forgetting it's not touch, mixing touch with keyboard and mouse is certianly going to reduce RSI and it becomes a natural extension of the OS.
To be fair to the tablet, I only need a proper keyboard when programming C#, otherwise I'd happily manage on touch screen alone.

Is there a combo with the 4gb ram/ 128gb drive with the keyboard?

Yes, there is, both the Surface 3 and the Surface 3 Pro. Actually, I would recommend the Pro, although it has only 64GB of storage:
You can also upgrade to an i5 CPU and 128GB of storage, but I am not sure that is worth nearly another 100 pounds.

Why are people comparing this to a phone running Windows mobile which is a totally different OS?

Depends, isn't Windows 10 on phones full fat windows just trimmed down to function well on a small touch display? Either way. People just love comparing Apples to Lemons. Always gotta find something to complain about.

It's not evenly remotely close as these benchmarks show:
The Surface isn't going to be for everyone but I got the non-Pro 128Gb/4Gb Ram one for my son as he's allowed to bring a device into school and is allowed to take photographs of whats on the board (front and rear cameras). With the pen, it'll be great for taking notes, its not too heavy, not too noisy and not too big. Plus there will be a ton of accessories like decent cases as its so mainstream.
If you want to do serious stuff, I'd say save up and get the Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book
I'm not sure but I guess so. I dont think they monitor it. But the article did think this wouldnt be around forever.
Another thing might be to find someone who downloaded it onto a USB stick. I have loads of PCs at home so I did it that way and upgraded all of mine without downloading it all again every time. I've wiped mine now otherwise I could have uploaded it onto my cloud space and given you the link.
This is the non-Pro version.

thanks.
I was looking to get an upgrade to my linx 10 and found the surface range very interesting and ended down the endless hole of the famous auction site many hours later...
that was the result of my browsing i wanted to share.
I like my linx 10 but found the cpu ( atom based) lacking and 2gb of ram barely ok if needed for anything other than casual browsing.

amazing price... i found loads on sale and found the reviews to be meh on these models..
however the reviews on the i5 and i7 models were really brilliant.. and you couldn't find any of them for sale.. seems like the i5 and i7 ones are the keepers!
and the atom and i3 processor ones with weak cpus and low ram were generally sold off in the first few days...
something to bear in mind....
cheers

The 'i5 and i7 models' are the Surface Pro line.
This is the Surface. Non-Pro. Smaller screen, three-point kickstand. Less powerful with a smaller 10" screen but with MicroUSB charging.
