Some parents raise responsible kids and are fortunate enough to be able to spend time supervising their activities. So many things that teach kids about the real world need that kind of commitment.
Things as diverse as archery, fishing, cooking, swimming and even gardening are all dangerous activities to expect a child to undertake alone, but there's so much to be gained from doing those things with kids, because spending time with your kinds on that kind of thing is what teaches them to love it for themselves.
I love gardening because of the time I spent in the greenhouse with my Dad and my Grandad when I was younger. And I loved the responsibility of being given a knife, when usually they would be off limits of course, and I respected that for the most part.
Learning to handle potentially dangerous things in a supervised environment when you are young is actually the best recipe for being safe when them when you're older.

You can make one of these yourself - A dome of wet sand, cover it in clay from a stream, cut out a door and scoop the sand out and the first fire in it will harden the clay - great fun with the kids, especially if you make your pizzas from scratch too.

We have a pizza stone and use it over the fire table or barbeque... same end result, but the pizza stone just goes back in the kitchen cupboard with the roasting/baking tins, rather than needing somewhere to put/store a tabletop oven.
This seems a lot of fuss when a pizza stone is a lot more convenient for less money, and easier to store.

If you don't mind paying 70 sheets for a hollowed out lump of clay on some coat hangers, a few quid on tomatoes ain't going to break the bank is it ?

Don't know about Wakefield, but digging clay out of stream banks was something we used to do on school trips (I'm 41 now, but doesn't mean it's all gone). I reckon it's just about asking the right person (a farmer, maybe?) and for building an oven, you don't have to be fussy about taking out the bits of grass and tiny pebbles etc.

I wasn't sure if you were being serious. Where do I find this stream with clay in it up in Wakefield? Serious question as I have never seen this.

Anyone got a good way to make really nice pizza Base? Mine always hardens when I cook it. I'm looking more for a pizza hut/Domino's style Base. Or as close as.

I would still not let a child play with this stuff that can potentially be dangerous even under surveillance and does not matter how many suggestions can be given to be safe. Saying so, good experience is made when things do happen hoping no one would get hurt but better to avoid whenever possible. My point anyway was that on an advert they cannot encourage children to play with something potentially dangerous.

Surely not for the fun of children, would really be irresponsible to let them play with this stuff
