​If you get a lease direct from the manufacturer in this case VW, it's normally 3 months payment up front which is much more affordable. Also no administration fee.
Also you can still haggle with the price.
What car is great for searching for lease deals, find a couple of good deals and then get the 2 vw dealerships to battle for your business.
I currently lease directly with Citroen Glasgow, they give me 500 off my next lease and will match only other quotes I get.

The excess mileage on my lease contract with Arval only covers up to 10% over the contracted amount. Above that you are outside contract and you then have no certainty as to the cost. How do you know this contract isn't the same? Pretty much every lease deal I've seem on here says go with the lower mileage option. I wonder how many people then actually read the small print...

Volkswagen finance is 7.2p per mile flat no matter the excess mileage. Same with most finance companies.

I would think 35 is reasonable, I get 38 or so in my 2002 1.6 Focus Estate, best I've ever managed is 43 or so however this is a far newer and hopefully more efficient car. However the 46 combined is ridiculous.

Not commenting on the deal as I struggle to imagine only using 5k miles a year as I only really use my car for trips/visiting places and have done far more than that in 2 months previously.

I had a 2.0 Scirocco before my current car. Lifetime average MPG was 32.9. Even on a clear motorway run driving like a Dorris under 70 would still only get between 39 - 42 MPG.

This is still a great deal though. And the mileage is so low who even cares about MPG!!!

I would personally spend the £25pm more and get the Leon 290 deal, yes the sirocco is a cooler car. But the Leon has over 100bhp more, lots more standard kit and I'm pretty sure includes the trick differential. So overall is a mega hatch !

I think they resolved the problem. In the early teens, instead of filling the engines on the production line with recycled oil, as VAG used to do, the engines were filled with longlife synthetic oil. Unless the engines are revved quite hard from time to time during the running-in period, they do develop a bore and ring problem that results in high oil consumption.

This is a very good deal if you would like a new car every couple of years but don;t want to shell out £30,000 and get hammered for depreciation - It is good because the cost of the lease is less than the depreciation of the car based on the same annual miles - ergo a good deal. Also the peace of mind of a warranty is included. If you want a car to run into the ground or one that already has been then spend the £5k on a 10 year old bmw as suggested previously.

Assuming a conservative 20mpg and fuel price of £1.10/l, I make the cost of 10k miles ~£2500. Add in another £1500 for two years insurance, brings us to £4k. Of course both of those costs apply even if you buy an equivalent car. Lets throw in £500 for incidentals/servicing and we're still only at £4500.

Cant seem to get anywhere near £12k. Perhaps he intends to return it on bricks having stripped it bare for parts :smile:

We currently have a cheap VW Golf deal that finishes in December. It was with 5k miles which we knew at the time we would go flying past (more like 15k) but budgeted for that in excess costs. BUT the brilliant thing was that when I phoned up VW Financial Services over a year in to the contract and told them about the excess mileage she worked out an increased payment deal that saved around £500 over the term in excess mileage costs. Anyone in the same boat should look into it!! Cheers!

This car can currently be bought for £20k by the likes of you and me. VWFS probably get them for £18k (probably cheaper due to the sheer number ordered), they then get £5k in payments over the lease term, VW have control over the 2nd hand car market, car gets sold at auction for £15k and the dealers sell the car as 'approved used' for £17k with a horrendously priced PCP deal.

With that 700 miles per week, which is 36,400 miles a year, I recommend you to carbon trade yourself to another country.

A fabulous deal OP - thanks for sharing. For someone in the market for a lease, this is a terrific deal. If you don't understand leases, don't like them, walk on by. No need to vote, no need to comment. It's that easy.

Buying anything new is a horrendous proposition financially. Why don't you jump on every other thread on this site and tell people it will actually cost them an additional 2.5 times the original cost of purchase and they are mugs because buying second hand would be much cheaper?

If you want a new or reasonably new car and don't have the cash (or access to very cheap personal finance), leasing "can" be the cheapest route. The finance rates on nearly new cars are horrendous by comparison. Depreciation is generally horrendous for the first few years.

Of course there are negatives. Start ticking options and these deals generally aren't worthwhile. Excess mileage costs can nullify the advantage of leasing (although not always so worth checking as sometimes its cheaper to go for the lower mileage and then pay excess). The best deals often require you to pick the "best" colour for resale. You may have to worry about GAP insurance incase the worst happens.

But its just silly to suggest a £5k lease will actually cost you £12k then hide behind innuendo when people call you out on that. Or to suggest not having an asset at the end is an issue, when the asset in question is a depreciating asset (all that matters is the cost to you for the period you intend to own against the cost to lease). Or bang on about buying a second hand banger instead (not you but others)and running it into the ground.

I don't think most people are so stupid that they are oblivious buying new things, especially cars, is financially less prudent then purchasing second hand.

PS. I'm no lease fan boy, my car isn't leased or financed. But if it would have been cheaper to lease I would have been over the moon.

Buying new, nearly new or leasing and finding where the real value lies is a valid discussion. You make a number of relevant points but I would settle with saying that whilst lease deals can be the best option in specific circumstances there are indeed a number of drawbacks and they are very costly.

if you did 10k a year,,, that extra 5k is £360... not a bank breaker..... ( 5,000miles x 7.2p = 36000p / 100 = £360)

Some people don't commute to work. I work form home so only do about 2000 miles a year so deals like this would be good for someone in my position. And remember all of my miles are purely for fun, no point justifying a car purchase based on the boring miles you might do commuting to work.

I've just bought a brand new car on PCP because it meets my criteria and costs less than buying a used car, plenty of discounts to be had buying new, in fact I got £8500 off list which was amazing!!

Not to mention they are paying sod all for the finance.

And many of the best deals are as a result of manufacturer incentives to balance differentials between production and demand. It would cost them more to lower production (production lines are most efficient at near maximum) then subsidise some units. However, they don't want to do that in a way that would impact their retail prices, so they subsidise lease deals/business deals/etc which then also keep their franchises happy by providing nice cars to sell second hand with exorbitant finance.

A shame, this will be exactly the type of deal and car I'll be looking for but my lease doesn't expire until the start of next year.. Hopefully something similar around then.

It's a fairly standard question when these lease deals are posted. The answer is that, if you don't mind an older car, then buy one secondhand, when most of the depreciation has already occurred. That's what I do.

If you feel you deserve/need/want a brand new car, then the initial depreciation can be as much as the cost of the lease. In this case, I expect it will be more than the lease cost, as apparently a new model is just about to come out.

Going for this lease under the impression you can do 10k P/A by paying 10k miles as excess mileage at the end of the contact at 7.2p a mile is not going to work.

Lease contracts state that you cannot exceed the mileage allowance by a certain percentage threshold; for example on my current car that threshold is 20%. If we apply that to this lease deal then 20% over the total 2 year contact allowance would come out at 12000 miles or 6000 P/A. If you breach that 20% limit then you have to pay a premium pence per mile rate. Often double, so by doing 20,000 miles you would pay 2,000 at 7.2p per mile and 8,000 at 14.4p per mile. That's £1296 in excess mileage, or an additional £54 a month not £30.

In short, it's better to go for the 10k P/A lease deal if you're going to do that mileage.

Never had a lease deal with that clause in it. And had a lot. Including 3 x VW from VWFS. That's why the 10k profile works out the same as the 5K profile plus the excess miles at 6p /m + VAT

We all have different scenarios in which this lease deal would make sense or not.

I base mine on this .....

Last car - VW Passat , purchase price £6500 in 2011 (car was 5yr old with 90k on the clock)

Kept car for 5 years and travelled a total of 26k miles , total repair costs over this time were £3500 including servicing/ tyres/mots etc (had a new clutch/flywheel during this time !)

Traded car in this year for £1750 so total cost of ownership came to £8250.

5 years with a lease deal such as this would average a total of £12,750 - difference is obvious , my Passat was 5-10 year old whilst I was behind the wheel , the lease car would always be between 0 and 2 years old

The privilege of having the lease deal is you do not have to make such a big upfront payment and you get to drive a new car so to speak every couple of years which is nice.

The cost for me would equate to around £900 a year ( just under £18 a week ) so it is worth considering I guess.

That said , I now have a 5 series 3.0d m sport new shape and love it , have yet to see a lease deal on a comparable car which could get anywhere near my projected depreciation so cost difference would be substantial.
I'm happy to keep my current car for 5 years and take a £7-£8k loss when trading it in :wink:

If the car you are buying is likely to depreciate more than the total payments you make on a lease then a lease is better, otherwise buy. That's why lease deals can vary widely on cars, sometimes you can lease an expensive car for less than a cheaper car because the more expensive car depreciates less in the lease period than the cheap car.

Same 5k mileage, but I have a company car which we use most, so she is fine with the 5k. I think our excess mileage is 6p per mile. She just got the car a couple of weeks ago and is delighted with it.

It's decent for a low upfront cost and reasonable mileage, but be aware 36 months mean you are more than likely to need an MOT before sending it back.

Is it the Zetec S or Red or Black Edition? And is it the 125 or 140? Really does depend on the detail.

As said above, it's worth looking at what the mileage excess charges are and doing the math so if you think you might do say 12-13K a year you "might" be better off signing up for 10K and paying the 2-3K at x pence per mile.... careful though as even the personal deals often add VAT to the excess mileage figures.

I think leasing will grow and grow as "a" way to run a car but it won't ever be for everyone. For me, I do 2 or 3 trips across France every year so liked the idea of something new that "should" be reliable and at least the cost of running say a modern SUV against a 6-7 year old one will probably work out a lot cheaper over 2 years ownership too.

I've just experienced owning a perfectly good car that had unfortunately hit the time of life where it needed a new clutch, wishbones and tyres within a 6 month period.... just after that some ar5e hole delivery driver reversed into it and wrote it off... so today I picked up a Hyundai Tuscon on a 2 yr lease. For me, the lack of mechanical surprises that I have to fork out for will be a nice change and hopefully the cost of running should be significantly less too (much better fuel economy, tax and AA cover is included in the lease, no MOT to worry about and it's got 9 miles on the clock and a 5 year warranty).

No, you're thinking of PCP where you get the option to buy at the end of the term or hand the car back. With leasing you just hand the car back at the end of the term, although some finance companies will sell it to you if you ask, normally at the price reserve price they will be putting it into auction for, so it can be a good bargain especially if you have looked after the car.

What you are talking about there is perceived value to you. If the paperweight is normally about £300+ a month, but now it's £200+a month then it's a deal by the very nature of the fact that the cost is lower than normal.

Which is regardless of whether you believe it is justifiable or worth going for.

​You can always ask them to quote you a 1+23 or a 1+35. Obviously the monthly payment is higher the less you pay up front though. My lease deal is 1+35 because I didn't want to pay any upfront at all. Company car scheme came to an end and we got the money instead, so I just replicated the car scheme with a lease deal that was virtually the same.

just ordered one but doesn't mention anything on the customer vehicle order about the leather interior, sat-nav, alloys, parking sensors etc as advertised on their website. Did I miss the trick somewhere?

Don't think so, sounds like standard equipment on something like that car. Check with the leasing company, as it's advertised save the web page anyway.

As for mileage on lease deals, I went for the 208 GTI on here, great car but went for the 10K. Ended up that month getting a 12 month contract at the hospital just 10 minutes walk up the road from me. Sainsburys is a 5 minute walk. Now they've opened a Pure Gym 10 minutes walk away.

Got the car August 3 last year, total mileage so far 3338. The law of Sod.
On a 20K list price the insurance market value was 13K 3 months ago. Also seen a few from dealers @14K.
Great car and it's still mint, I'm not of the thrash rental/lease cars mindset so if I can buy it I will.

Try asking the finance company if they will reduce the monthly payment. I did that on my wife's Audi A1 because she was averaging 6k halfway through the term on an 8k per year deal and they reduced the payments by £40 per month. Worth asking.

If you only do that, i'd strongly suggest you take a look at electric cars. Less maintenance cost, and with that number of miles practically 0 fuel cost.

As we all know, VW LIE about the specs of their cars. So don't be fooled, they pollute more and do less MPG than any of their spec sheets suggest.

Bear in mind, you NEED to tell the insurance company that the registered owner (and keeper in most cases) is the lease company... Not you!

Directline, for example, DO NOT insure leased cars.... Happily, many others do but you do need to declare this when getting insurance, you don't own the car.

In all leased cars, the owner is the lease company. If the V5 is in their name too (i.e. they tax it) then they are the keeper too.

The last white car I had was a mk2 cortina, bought from new. That dates me!

I don't think there is any catch. Just that the initial payment is much higher than you would normally have, which keeps the monthly cost down. Usually, the initial payment is 3, 6 or 9 monthly payments and then the rest over 23 months but, of course, that would mean the monthly payments are higher. For instance, the same car is offered by the same company for £575.94 up front and 23 payments of £191.98 which means you pay a total of £4991.48 so £137.61 more than the above deal, but you don't have to fork out £2400 up front and can keep just over £1800 in the piggy bank. Mind you, with the interest rates as they are, it's better to pay more up front if you have the money because keeping £1800 in a savings account for 2 years wouldn't earn you £137.61 in interest. There are a couple of other options on their website as well where you can pay different amounts up front which changes the monthly payment.

price has gone up £20 ish a month. Someone mentioned Yes Lease earlier, they seem to have similar deal £161.27 a month, but only £967.61 up front (and a £300 processing fee) so only around £123 in total more expensive than original deal. can't find excess mileage details though...

It's currently between Estoril Blue, Glacier Silver and Mineral White, although they are all £550 and the Alpine white is £0 which doesn't help as that looks good also.

Not sure on the blue though, most BMW seem to be Estoril Blue these days!! And my wife has a silver 320d so not sure I want two silver cars, although it does always look clean even when its not. :smile:

Well if you're torn you may as well just for for the free option. Can't say I recall seeing may Estoril Blue ones knocking about although in all honesty I can't say I've paid that much attention.

Hi Focus ST. I nearly got my M235i from a lease company. Metallic paint, same as you're deciding was free and auto box was half price. When I went to a BMW dealer and eventually went down PCP path I told them abut the deal I had found and they matched it. I went for estoril blue and it looks great - next time i think mineral grey or glacier silver would be my choice.
I took estoril blue because they didn't have the colour/spec I wanted and threw in £1500 worth of extras for £300 :smirk:

I had a 1.4 TSI Scirocco for 6 months last year, I was impressed when I used to get over 40mpg. I've since switched to a diesel and on the same route I got 78mpg the other day so beware of the fuel economy.
One of the most annoying things were the huge doors, especially when parking. The interior is very dated too.

I've got my deal direct through my local BMW dealers , I've been with them for years now and still service both our cars there so they matched all the lease deals and other dealers out there.

Their initial deal was OK but a lot more than one of the users local to me on babybmw.net got from a dealer in Rochdale so I took that deal in and they matched it.

It's a PCP on an M240i with pretty much all options ticked. £2k deposit, 10k miles a year over 48 months for circa £450/month and a GFV of £15,500 ish - I'd never considered PCP finance and didn't realise you could get such big discounts when buying new (nearly £8k which covers all the options list) - I was originally going to borrow £30k from the bank to buy a used 64/15 plate M235i but when you do the figures over a 5 or even 6 year term, when buying it after 4 years, there is nothing in it when you factor in extra MOT/service/tax etc. I think it will cost me £1200 more over 6 years to buy new but I will have a car worth £3k more so in effect will be up on a used car.

Only issue currently is that I haven't driven one as yet and none of my local dealers have one in to try or even a 235. As soon as I drive one I will sign the deal.

What they are saying is with the upfront payment plus the monthly amount equates to £200ish per month total for 2 years.

If you're going to do that then you would get a Focus RS. Another £60 a month would get you the Leon, but its still a Seat.

So the dealer wins everytime. You pay the depreciation, then the car is sold for the list price minus the depreciation... they sell for full price every time. Easy money.

It depends how much the car depreciates over the 2 years. They make an assumption but if the market changes they could end up losing out. The alternative is go buy a new car with a loan where you pay the same monthly amount then after 2 years sell the car for however much you can. If you sell it for more than is outstanding on the loan then you pocket the difference but if you sell it for less then you have to make up the difference. Are you really prepared to take that gamble?

Bit like a fixed mortgage where you k kw the risk upfront in terms of the payments.

You need to re-read the post. It's £2400 down and £1200 per year so £4.8k in total over two years.
