Deal working again as of 06/08/2016 with red and silver in stock.
I think this is a great price for a Full HD screen with SSD and one of the latest intel processors from the skylake range running Windows 10. Also it has DDR4 RAM (pretty cool) and wireless AC. Just to let people know this offer is still on and the code still works. Silver and red are in stock too - just bought one. Cheers OP!

Just tested the code 5VCLEN and it gives 10% off. Red and silver is in stock at the moment if anyone is interested still.

Just silver in stock now, but no matter. Just to let you know that the 5VCLEN code (which has changed from 5% off to 10% since i posted it) seems to work at 10% off any item in the entire store, even this yoga tablet for example http://imgur.com/t3OpdwH
Frustratingly for me this code doesnt stack with student discount, so the ideapad is £404 with this code, and £404 with student discount haha, so not such a great deal for me, and the original code did stack bringing it to something like £380, which i should have jumped on if i had the money ready.
Lastly like i said it works for everything in the store so you might be better spending £20 more and getting a yoga 510 which has the IPS display (this one says optional?) and also has touchsreen, Downside is less ram and a 1tb hard drive instead. I don't suppose that you can connect this to a external screen/projector at all?
Currently do so from my Dell Vostro 3700 laptop using hdmi and would like to do same via rgb or hdmi if at all possible on this one.
Cheers.

I have lenovo i3-4010u,nvidia 840m gpu.bought it on German Amazon for 300£
good stuff:
long battery life
dedicated gpu(I play DDO).works on high settings.
bad stuff:
CPU is really slow
when I play DDO it overheats a lot
takes ages to start up

If you put an SSD it would probably start a lot quicker and everything will seem much faster, some good deals for around £50.
I think the nvidia 840m and the CPU both generating heat close to each other will contribute to the overheating, not much you can do about it. If it is shutting down because of overheating then I guess you could ask for it to be repaired but I doubt it'll help unless a fan has failed.
New code i found is "5VCLEN" which gives you 5% off ALL orders, so this laptop would be £428 instead of £449 default, but might be better deals which are already reduced to use this code on

Backlit keyboard - yes, so long as it doesn't mean the legends are invisible in certain lighting conditions. :disappointed: Been there - done that!
Touch screen? Been there - done that too! I hardly ever use the one on my laptop - only for dragging maps around. And yet it still becomes a fingerprint magnet - yuck. Of course, YMMV but it's notable that touch screens on laptops appear to be going out of fashion if Lenovo is anything to go by.

All of the ideapad 510s' have the same screen - if you click "show model differences" then none of them are highlighted. It would seem rather contrary to have a laptop whose screen can rotate 180 degrees to act as a presentation device for small groups and not have an IPS screen to take advantage of it - but who knows?

22 Jul 16#21
The models below this have a lower res screen( the 300/310 series) but I'm still not 100% sure. It doesn't seem to show anywhere to configure the screen. Could be worth a call if unsure

Looks a good laptop, but I can't seem to find if the screen is IPS or not.
The specs don't mention if TN or IPS and the blurb above says:
"For truly vivid colors and nearly 180° of viewing angles, configure your ideapad 510S with a 14" optional Full HD display with In-Plane Switching technology".
Is that saying you can add the IPS screen, or there is a model with a lower res and you can add the full HD screen with IPS?

I've had Lenovo i3 4010u and now Lenovo i5 6200U and both do not suffer from any heat issues you mentioned.
thomas01155
22 Jul 16#16
I have the same CPU (i5-6200u) in a PC specialist laptop and it gets quite warm, almost too hot to keep on my lap especially if I'm playing a game. They probably have worse thermal design compared to the lenovo ones if that is the case.
Would be interested to hear how warm this model gets under GPU and CPU load if anyone gets it.

Would this laptop work well with an external NAS drive, and if so are there any external drives that are recommended? Laptop looks great, but storage is light. Thanks!

Downgrade to Windows7 and its quite decent mashine for the price. Processor a little let down, but for publishing your life 24/7 online is a good tool for that.

I actually prefer the i3's compared to the i5's and i7's on laptops as they don't seem to heat up much lap as much!
Downgrading is more hassle than it's worth, in terms of time spent and buying a licence. Windows 10 isn't the best OS they've done and still very much a work in progress, however it does work OK and should work OK on this machine.
I thought 1607 build was out on the 16th July, but seems not. I see the current version as 10586.494. Not sure when the 1607 will actually come online for general release. Ah seems it's actually out on August 2nd >
1. Original Windows release 1507: (otherwise known as buggy hopeless first bodged crappy attempt)
Build 10240 absolute crap
2. November 2015 update 1511 (Threshold) :
10586.x (where x is a number updated every month). Less crap than 1507
3. Anniversary update 1607 (Redstone) :
1607 didn't come out on July 16th, due for general release on August 2nd. No idea if it will be any good, but you'd expect it to be better than the previous two major releases!
Full version history as per link directly above, current release is on 1511 buildline and coloured green so that's 10586.494, if you wish to check your release version then type > winver in to the search box on taskbar and press enter or hold CTRL and R and type winver and press enter.
10586.494 should be displayed if you're on the general public release. Next month this should do a significant update to 14393.x where x is a number I don't know yet, likely a 4 digit number.

Looks like an excellent deal! A full HD IPS screen is good for working with photos on the road, and the processor will probably cope reasonably well with Lightroom.

Low power and low heat :-) all the laptops in this range have the U part in the name which means ultra-low power.
Most people won't anything better than this CPU unless they are doing video editing, gaming or other CPU intensive tasks. Watching Netflix, using Facebook and using office will all work perfectly.
