I got one of these from Lidl at £5 .... £13 at my local garden centre, so it was a bargain, but it was a dinner invitation for the local slugs

I'm not a Alan Titmarsh or a Monty Don but these plants need a Neutral to Acidic soil
They will not grow in clay soil, Try growing them in pots with ericaceous compost and they will fly away.

These absolutely will gow on clay. My soil is a shillet (a nasty mixture of clay and broken slate) and hydrangeas are one of the few plants that do well. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=305
They have the added benefit that they are one of the few plants that the goats don't eat.
Good price - heated.

Must be something else about our soil they didn't like, strangely they are the only plant that I have tried and failed with numerous times over the years.

Just a question on Hydrangea.... we moved into our new house last year and there were loads in the front garden, so big and heavy the stems were almost laying on the ground. I cut them all back , just to about 30cm from ground, before winter and hoped for the best. At the moment its all green foliage, about 4ft high, looking really healthy but no sign of flowers yet. Is it the case that I wont have any this year due to cutting it back hard or do you think they might come? We are in Scotland so not much heat here at the moment , plenty of rain though!
