I'm sure we all know the Refresh drill by now, but here's the speed version
1)Sign up for 24 months refresh deal, £9.99 upfront
2)Tablet Arrives
3)Call up/go online and pay off the £24 left on the device plan
4)Cancel the Data plan.
Yes, you can cancel the data plan once you've paid off the device, no you won't have to pay for the 24 months of data.
Can't see this cheaper anywhere, even Cex want £55 for the WiFi version.

I get this when I try and setup the direct debit, it's telling me it will take £2 for 24 months, so they will take £48 so the deal has changed?

Heed my warning. Myself and my wife took the iPhone 6 refresh deal which we were told was cancelled (Monday) we have today been sent a bill for £600 which is o2s mistake which they've said we have to pay and be refunded 14 days later or it'll show as a missed payment on our credit file. It's not worth the hassle for a cheap phone.

very much depends on what you use it for... for a 1gb ram, it won't be any good on gaming but it's great otherwise

Trying to deal with O2 CS is usually akin to pulling your own teeth out with a pair of rusty pliers and no anaesthetic.

For me I found completely the opposite not done a deal like this but I found their cs first class.

I think if you pay off the device contract, don't use any of the data and cancel the data contract within 14 days you might be able to get away without paying the 1st month of data.
In this case though, it's only a fiver, so its not going to be the end of the world if you do have to pay one month.

Do you have to pay the first months rental?

How do you go about unlocking these?

Used to be that when you pay off the device part of the contract but before you cancel the data part of the contract, you can go onto chat with customer services and get them to give you an unlock code for it. I'm assuming that's still the case.
don't you atleast have to pay one months line rental?

If you go through to the tarrifs, choose the cheapest refresh one, and it's £9.99 up front for the tablet then £1 a month for 24 months so total of £33.99 as per op. The airtime part of the contract is £5 a month.

How can you tell how much your paying for the device as it only says £6 per month

What tends to happen is that they will try and take the full 24 month cost of the contract when you cancel even though they say they won't. If you manually stop the direct debit prior to this then it will destroy your credit rating when they try and fail to illegally take your money (ironic really) until you get them to sort it out, which is a hassle.
If you let the money go out then you can just get it back from them but that (in my case) took 30 working days, escalating it to the complaints team and then handing it over to my bank to deal with. Not ideal losing £550 for 30 days though (in my case)
Obviously the 3rd option is it all goes fine. But given that their system is designed to take the money by default, there's a high chance of problems I'd say. It all depends on how competent the customer service person you speak to is when you do the cancellation.

Credit scores are made up by credit history companies in order to sell you their other products which will magically improve it. Noddle reckons mine is poor which is quite amusing. Banks and other lenders use their own criteria to lend and never see this fictitious score.

Did a refresh deal this week, called customer service and as soon as I asked to unlock and pay off the device they knew exactly what I was up to and said people are doing it all the time. All gone through ok up to now but still waiting for the unlock.

From other posts it looks like people might have been unlucky and the payments weren't fully canceled, but they only noticed when they had an issue on their credit report. If you check your O2 account when the bill was due to go out you should be OK.
That or they tried to take out a bunch at once and it looked a bit sus.

I done it once myself few years ago for a iphone 5s I think , and it was a nightmare. I heard that doing this refresh deals and cancelling contracts affects your credit rating? is this true?

Good deal. Heat added. I have done refresh deals nearly 5 times now. Cancelling the contract was a pain even after paying for the device. Plenty of calls n chats with CS..
Opening post
1)Sign up for 24 months refresh deal, £9.99 upfront
2)Tablet Arrives
3)Call up/go online and pay off the £24 left on the device plan
4)Cancel the Data plan.
Yes, you can cancel the data plan once you've paid off the device, no you won't have to pay for the 24 months of data.
