I wish I wasn't addicted to my cars but sadly I am and usually change every two years (never a new one due to depreciation). Leasing has been the best thing I've ever done. A brand new car with zero unexpected repairs for two years and in the case on the R a fantastic car as well.

I know it's horses for courses and I do understand car leading and who it works for and who it doesn't, but £7k to borrow a Golf for two years...... I just couldn't do it.

Good deal if you would be looking to buy one new and chop it in in two years time though, but I suspect very few people do that anyway.

Quite a lot of people take car allowance instead of company car and these kind of deals suit them very well.

Don't worry, you're not alone! This is a great deal for what it is, if you're inclined towards leasing... but borrowing something for 2 years for £7,000 just seems insane to me. You can get some lovely cars for £7,000 and you'll still have something to show for it after 2 years!

Oh well each to their own  and all these people leasing brand new cars means more second hand bargains for the rest of us to pick up in the future lol.

5 Jul 16 1 #12
Think of it another way.

You want a new car, 15k these days gets you a Ford Fiesta.

I've currently got a 28k Octavia which has cost under 5k to lease for 2 years.

If I continue to lease, which I expect to do so, I'll have spent perhaps just more than a Fiesta and had a far nicer car imo which is never over 2 years old.

A lot of people, update a car after two years and if so, this makes a lot of sense
sherlock747 to morpheus
5 Jul 16 1 #16
Look at it this way. If you were inclined to buy this car new then the likelihood is you'd pay more than £7k in depreciation over the 2 years. It might not make sense to you but leasing can be a very cost effective way to drive a new car and this is a pretty good deal for a car like this.

Having just leased a Qashqai through Gateway2Lease I can highly recommend them.

I know the previous deal for Gateway2Lease was pulled from the site before for the following reasons:
"This was removed as the thread breached our site rules and the actual seller of the item is suspended from our platform."

Not sure it will hang around on here long if that is still the case.

The list price is not the same as the price you'd pay from the dealer. There was a 335d on here a few months ago for £30k, it retails at £40k+
karlie88
5 Jul 16 1 #20
Just have to go to the right dealer. Currently, you can get a Golf R Estate for £6440 all-in with 10k pa. Also these include nav and winter pack as standard. Majority didn't get that 3 months ago.
Witchfinder
5 Jul 16 2 #21
So imagine you buy that for £30k. Two years later it's worth £23k on private sale. It's cost you £7,000 in depreciation, plus whatever you've spent on maintenance (let's say two services at £300 each) and you have the hassle of selling it privately, or the indignity of being offered £20k on trade in for it (meaning it's actually cost you £10,000 in depreciation).

Owning only really makes sense once a car reaches 3 or 4 years old, in my opinion.

5 Jul 16 #26
True - Mine came to £6403.20 direct with Northampton VW - with Car net.

Heated seats isn't a major issue when they're cloth, if they were leather - then maybe it would be more worth it.
acj7745
5 Jul 16 #27
Yeah it is a total mine field. I buy a car that's 5 years old for £6/7/8k but 100,000 miles on it in three years and sell it for peanuts. This is the cheapest way of owning a reasonable car for my circumstance. Or at least I think so. I'd love one of these, just prohibitively expensive for someone of my means and miles.

5 Jul 16 #34
But isn't it just like an extended version of hiring a car for the weekend? You'll get charged silly money at the end of the lease for any damages, such as alloys scuffs/ scratches / parking dents etc.

It is certainly a good way of owning a new car, but alas there are pros and cons, just need to decide which one works for you

huddsguy
5 Jul 16 #37
No. I got the VW Tiguan deal over a year ago and when the car gets delivered you get a booklet of acceptable dinks and scuffs. I was actually surprised how much they let you get away with. It's through vw so don't try ripping you off.
adriandocherty
5 Jul 16 2 #38
There are a lot of cheap lease deals out there at the moment, for good reason. They are an effective way for the auto manufacturers to dump surplus cars without dropping the new list price or offering silly discounts.

The lease company is getting these cars for a massive discount off list and dumping them into the auction market afterwards. Say the list for this one is £33,385. Lease Company probably paying £25,000 and selling after two years for £22,000. Their depreciation is far less than the lease payments. It is good business for them. Sadly, Joe Public can't always get hold of them new for £25,000 (though there are often websites that can help).

Best deals tend to be available only on certain models.

So, bargains to be had if you are flexible on model and spec.

For anyone after a higher mileage deal, I'm in the process of putting an order in with these guys.. http://www.vehicles4work.com/personal-lease-cars/volkswagen/golf-estate

3+23 20k a year, £362.99 a month with £1088.96 initial payment.

Great deal considering we nearly went through with a C250D, same lease profile but higher initial payment and around £425 a month.

I'm not convinced they are. If you view the vehicle standard specification on the website, after following the link. Sat nav is not mentioned. It's listed under the options however, for an extra £765.00. So it's unclear but I might call them to ask.

direct from vw i have this quoted which appears cheaper.

6432.46 @10k with metallic paint (black) , direct from vw

less for the white, bit more for lapiz, no other options allowed.

this includes a 600+vat dealer contribution.

personally, i have to add 512 onto that to cancel my current deal on order, still making vw offer 764.54 cheaper than current deal , but i cant have the colour i want , i better decide quick ha ha
karlie88
5 Jul 16 #49
That offer is from VW Listers right? If so, they've taken the 600+VAT dealer contribution into account already. So it's actually £7100ish. I phoned to enquire.
sherlock747
5 Jul 16 #50
That's just it, you're not paying loads for a new car. You could, however buy and own the car from new and then watch how much more money you'll lose as it depreciates.
numptyj
5 Jul 16 #51
If you are going to take this at 10k per annum and do higher mileage (circa 20k) per year but pay the mileage cost, you would need to check the T&Cs as they might only allow you to do an extra 50% per year so across the 2 years the contract mileage would be 30k.
Be worth contacting them for a higher mileage quote.

You'd just need to do the maths on the extra mileage cost plus fuel costs, if 40mpg is going to be the best you get out of it and you're planning on 20k per annum with a heavy right foot it'll be thirsty!
ClownHat
5 Jul 16 #52
I just applied for a quote and got told this will be the 2017 1st September model with sat nav.
However, all the standard paint has now run out and you can only get metallic for same deposit but minimum of 208.86 a month.

I would love a lease deal but am in catch 22, I do 20k a year which means a stupidly high monthly payment, or buy a used car just out of 3 year warranty and paying a small fortune on maintenance, timing belts, parts, as things soon start to go wrong with the mileage I do.

I think the thing with these lease deals is that for people who want new... they're very good and make sense!

However people that prefer second hand find it much harder to justify. I personally wouldn't do it not just for the costs involved, but because I prefer modifying my car quite extensively... so having something I can't touch wouldn't work for me!

It's funny though when I see all these brand new Fiesta ST's driving around (they were about £135 p/m at their cheapest iirc) I think they look nice etc. but to me it's just so bland driving around in the exact same thing as everyone else... I'd rather be in my 10 year customised car  but each to their own; I can definitely see the appeal of brand new and have certainly considered it in the past.

To the people on here - enjoy!

7 Jul 16 #78
These deals have been appearing on and off over the last couple of years. I took delivery of my 5 door hatch back in Jan 2014 and paid £1700 + 23 x £219 (that includes £16pm for Lapiz Blue) with 10K miles. I did enquired about the estate and thought about delaying delivery until the end of the year but I think the deal will be back on at some point and I'm also hearing rumours of the loyalty deal for existing golf r 'owners.'

Re MPG on motorway I've had 40mph on a motorway run sticking at 70. But I rarely stay at 70...!
aymanhd
7 Jul 16 #79
I've had 'mine' for 28 days now and have done just under 800 miles.
I feel the fuel economy is getting better as the car opens up a bit, which is good, as I've been averaging approx. 26mpg from the start. I managed 40.4mpg on a trip to heathrow (non-motorway) about 35 miles, and then 36.9 on a journey of about 4 miles. I get between 19 and 23 on my 4 mile commute. I drive mostly in eco-mode, unless Race mode permits - which most of the time it doesn't. The oil needs to at least get to temperature - between 95 and 110 degrees. I haven't tried Launch Control yet, as I've not reached the end of the running in period.
checkcanopy
7 Jul 16 1 #80
Thanks guys good to see 40mpg is achievable, I didn't order the car for economy but I don't mind sitting at 70ish on a boring motorway run. It'll get the engine bed in quickly too so I can try out the launch control
